There sure are a ton of Battlegrounds cosmetics these days and Blizzard is adding in "Battlegrounds Battle Bash" which they call a "fun new way to get Battlegrounds cosmetic items" and it'll be adding even more to the pool. Here's what you need to know about this new system:
- The first Battle Bash is Hallow's End themed.
- All players are going to get one free random Battle Bash. Good luck getting something Legendary!
- The remainder of the items available are paid rewards. You buy access to the Bash with real money or 1000 Runestones.
- Blizzard has not made pricing available yet but 1000 Runestones is $10 USD.
- Buying your Bash access gives you two random Bashes immediately.
- To unlock the remainder items in Battle Bash, you'll get one random Bash for every Top 4 finish.
- This effectively means you need 7 Top 4 finishes to unlock all 10 items (1 Free, 2 Instant, 7 Wins)
But Why Battle Bash? Is Battle Bash Worth Buying?
Cheaper cosmetics, at a risk. We can't say for certain what future Battle Bashes will look like, but the Hallow's End one contains the following:
- Legendary Board
- Legendary Strike
- 6 Emotes (Two bundles of 3)
- 6 Hero Skins
If you want to look at value, a Hero Skin itself goes for 100 Runestones in the shop, and Legendary Boards are 2000 Runestones as of posting. The Strike and Emotes which are valued at at least 500 Runestones (Epic Strike) and 500 Runestones (6 Emotes), so in total, we're looking at at least 3600 Runestones, or $36 USD in value for the 1000 Runestone or $10 USD buy-in. Not a bad deal!
The downside though is the risk. If you are a very casual Battlegrounds player, there is a chance you don't get the full value out of your purchase. The random nature of Bashes means that if you only win 5 games, there is a chance that you don't even get the Legendary Strike or Board, which would not feel great. That's not to say this product is targeted at very casual Battlegrounds players, but one should know that going into it there is RNG involved, but if you play enough you should get everything making the value great.
Blizzard hasn't yet announced how long the Bash will last, though their screenshot does indicate that it may at last at least 22 days. That's something to consider too for players that don't jump into Battlegrounds very often.
Is the Battle Bash worth buying? If you want my ultimate take on it, if you like Battlegrounds and you want a variety of fresh cosmetics on the cheap, this is 100% worth buying now. As Blizzard says in their blog about the feature (see below), these individual items may come back in the future and if they do, you can expect the group of them to be much more expensive.
Battle Bash Announcement
Quote From Blizzard With Patch 24.6, we’re introducing a fun new way to get Battlegrounds cosmetic items: Battle Bash. Each Battle Bash has a curated, limited time collection of Battlegrounds cosmetics,* including at least one Legendary item! Purchasing access to the Battle Bash means you earn one “Hammer” with each Top 4 finish during the Battle Bash period. Each Hammer is then be used to Bash for a random prize from that Battle Bash collection!
This first Battle Bash is the Hallows End Collection, featuring 10 items, including two Legendary items (one Legendary Board and one Legendary Strike) and more. Entry to this Battle Bash can be purchased for money or 1000 Runestones, and players will immediately get two Bashes with purchase.
On top of that, all players get one random Bash for free! That means everybody gets a holiday treat, whether they want to participate or not, and that those who do buy entry need seven Top 4 finishes to get all 10 prizes.
* Each Battle Bash collection as a whole is only available for a limited time. Individual items within each Battle Bash may be offered again at a later time.
Comments
Requiring players to win games even after they make a purchase aggravates the bizarre scenario in BGs where the worse your record is the easier it is to get assets and tat out of it because winning/top 4 becomes easier. If you play BGs to win, you will be in a MMR/rank that makes getting your cosmetics far harder than less driven players.
I just noticed that one of the hero-skins is more likely to be a Bartender skin. There currently is no Headless Horseman hero where the skin could be applied to, but most importantly the portrait doesn't have a thin purple color border inside of the wooden border, unlike all of the other skins in this bash. It would also make sense that the battle bash something for each type of Battlegrounds cosmetic
I'm not a BG player but I really REALLY hate when you pay for something and then still have to "earn" it through playing, just so it creates a forced sense of "investment". Granted, this is fairly reasonable for anyone who's actually dedicated to BGs, but I still don't like the direction
Getting a top-four finish isn't that hard, as in my low-MMR experience there are often one or two players dropping out because they didn't get the hero or early minions they were hoping for. If you play one game every other day, you'll probably get to 7 top-four finishes in 22 days. If you play less than that, you probably shouldn't buy Battlegrounds cosmetics in the first place.
Following my own advice, I'll probably just collect the freebie and move on.
I only play BG every now and then, but I'm totally into Halloween cosmetics for basically any game out there. I usually set myself the rule that for f2p games I get myself one premium skin, and only one premium skin, that's enough for me for the rest of the games lifespan and these cosmetics definetely have the potential for that. Especially with the board being a legendary one and the price being so low (if you don't count the time you need for the 7 wins).
Yo for real though, Halloween Cosmetics get me every damn time in every game.
I do like that they're giving big discounts for cosmetics if you just play the game, which is a great way to keep the queues quick. I do worry that some people aren't going to fully understand it though and end up getting screwed over due to the RNG nature of it and them being very casual. Will need to wait and see their in-game messaging on it though - which hasn't been a strength of Hearthstone ever.
