We've got great news for those that are still playing Hearthstone Mercenaries - your extra coins aren't useless anymore! Well, sort of. From the dawn of the new game mode, players began to quickly accumulate excess coins that were not able to be spent on anything due to the character-specific nature of them and how easy it was to max out your characters.
Spend Your Excess Coins With Renown
- The new system is called the Renown System.
- You take your excess coins for a maxed Mercenary and convert them into Renown.
- The campfire will have new "Trade Offers" daily for you to exchange Renown for coins for Mercs you haven't maxed.
No information has been shared yet regarding conversion rates for Coins to Renown to Coins, but nothing being said about it makes us believe it won't be 1:1.
Additions and Changes Coming to Mercenary Tasks
In addition to the Renown system, we can expect some new changes for tasks!
- All task chains are now available at all times.
- Your currently active party changes which task chains are being worked on.
- New task chains are being added, which aren't tied to any current task chains.
You can read more about the upcoming Mercenary changes in Patch 24.6 down below.
Blizzard Announcement
Quote From Blizzard Starting in Patch 24.6, we’ll be updating our Tasks system. Tasks have been an important part of Mercenaries since the mode first launched. We like that Tasks are a way for players to get free Coins, Packs, and more to help grow their collection and strengthen their Mercs as they play. We’ve improved the Task system a couple times since launch, making it much easier for players to get new Tasks and keep the Task chain rolling. Starting in Patch 24.6, we’re opening them up even more: all Task Chains will available at all times!
Task progress will be determined by the Mercs actively in your Party at that time. That means you can choose exactly which Task chains you want to work on, and when, and progress up to six Tasks chains at once!
In Patch 24.6, we’re also introducing a new Renown system that will let players exchange excess coins for coins of Mercs they own, but haven’t yet Maxed. Your excess coins can be converted to Renown at any time, then exchanged at the Campfire. With Tasks now being available at all times, the Campfire daily reset will instead feature offers to exchange Renown for coins for Mercs they haven’t Maxed. The daily reset will also include some miscellaneous general Mercs Tasks, not tied to any current Task Chain, mixed in with those Renown exchange offerings.
Keep an eye out for the 24.6 Patch Notes, coming soon, for more information about Renown and the new Task updates!

People here seem to miss the HUGE nerf to completing tasks.
As it is now, you can always complete task 18 by running heroic felwood#4 with a certain setup.
After the patch though.. You will need to have the mecernaries whos tasks you want to complete in the party. Huge nerf. Huge.
"Huge" is overplaying it a bit, don't you think? You could previously complete 4 of these at once with the other 2 slots being used for whichever choice of merc you use to easily beat up Xaravan (I usually used Varian or Y'Shaaraj, and the other 5 mercs don't matter much). Now... you can still do exactly the same. Sure, you might not manage to complete 6 of these tasks simultaneously very easily, but getting 4 done is fine.
So, if you are seeing this as a "huge nerf" I suggest you invest a little in Y'Shaaraj (who only needs coins to max out Defiled Attack and Mark of Y'Shaaraj) or Varian (just max out Retaliation and War Banner), and you'll be able to do this just as easily as before.
Think I'm more excited about the Tasks rework than the Renown system. Extremely annoying when I have 4 task for Mercs that have no synergy at all, even when abandoning tasks.
Seeing as I barely play Mercs, I have no maxed Mercs so ofc the renown system is pointless to me. Wonder how that will work though, will the campfire be empty?
Nice plans, now maybe remove the playing a "heroic" for certain mercs. Nothing should be behind a heroic in the first place.
Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong with heroics, but it is to get tasks and maxing done.
This is Blizzard literally rewarding me for stopping playing Mercenaries.
I simply couldn't keep grinding Mercs to max tasks. The new content didn't move the needle at all. It made it worse -- now I have to randomly get new Mercs and raise them up via a random task system. I didn't formally quit Mercenaries. My brain just walked away.
I expected that I'd be interested in the newest PvE material. I haven't even opened the PvE menu. The sheer mass of new content to grind up smothers any curiosity that I might have had.
Coin transfer at 1:1 with universally-available tasks is the bare minimum it would take to get me to even open up those windows. Acquiring new Mercs is still a pain because it requires tasking-up Mercs to get cards, but the ability to force Legendaries you've coined-up into existence would make the game almost playable. Here's what I expect, though: not only will the buyable Merc be random and many of the rolls be worthless (spend overmaxed coins on a Merc that also has overmaxed coins!), I don't think you'll be able to spend many coins at a time on the available Merc, which means the benefit will be tiny or even worthless.
Hopefully I'm wrong.
It was already confirmed that only unmaxed mercs have a trade offer at your campfire
From the image it looks like you can get something around 125 to 150 coins for two seperate mercs each day. That should let you speed up your progression significantly, without skipping it alltogether.
Makes sense from their point of view to cap the daily excess coins conversion, but after doing all 18 tasks it would take about 1000 extra coins to max out a single mercenary which means either waiting many days at the campfire or doing a lot of grinding still.
Let us wait for the final details and not speculate too much before hand though 😄
Ok, this looks alright. I've been eagerly anticipating this for quite some time, and I was afraid of how bad it might be, but this looks ... acceptable. Still need to see exactly what the exchange rate will be.
Yeah I think independent quests is huge. You don’t have to be forced into a poor synergy team just to hit all the quests at once and could now consider taking on new heroics instead of always grinding those easy ones. Makes me a lot more interested in the game mode
I suppose this means the mysterious stranger has no purpose now? Unless I'm misunderstanding and this isn't removing all RNG from the campfire, though how is the active party determined when you aren't currently in a bounty?
You were right - good guessing that the Stranger would be no more.
I hope they reuse that cool art for something else.
And the answer to my other question is that the campfire on the main screen simply shows task progress for every merc you own.
I thought who was at the campfire was determined by your party, but I guess maybe not since it still says "each day will bring new visitors" in that screenshot. I did noticed there's a new button, but do you only see the tasks and your progress at the campfire node in a bounty now?
That's what I was thinking by active party, who would show up at the campfire on the main menu?
Maybe I'm an idiot and I missed it, but have they said whether renown will grant a random mercy's coins, or a targeted mercs coins? Not that it will really matter, as I (like other grinders have said) have plenty of extra coins lying around!
I'm reading it as:
Step 1) you pick one of your maxed Mercs and push a button that exchanges that Merc's excess coins into Renown.
Step 2) you decide if one of Blizz's two trade offers is appealing enough to click on. If so, you get those coins and now have less Renown.
Sounds good to me.
I was somewhat wrong in Step 1, it's all maxed Mercs or nothing. No choice required.
Each day 2 random unmaxed mercs are chosen and are offering you to trade in a limited quantity of coins. Like how you can see in the image where you can trade renown into 150 Vanndar coins and/or 125 Guff coins.
Of course won't be 1 to 1... but I have so many extra coins that even with 10 to 1 I will have renown leftover
Indeed, with a 10:1 conversion rate most of us coin grinders would still be set for the next couple of years (or decade), lol 😂
