Well, this is probably one of the tamest druid expansions Ive seen in a while. Not a good sign for druid, since the class is currently floundering in the unplayable regions, but after what happened the previous rotation I can hardly expect anyone to feel any sympathy.
Will the treant builds work? In my opinion, no. Most druid builds either go fast or go long, and treants are kinda somewhere in the middle, similar with Timber Tambourine builds, something which might actually be the better of the two. The only way this would have worked is that they bring back Mulchmuncher and Aeroponics, without which there's simply no reason whatsoever to play treants at all.
But at least druid did get something. Lifebinder's Gift will easily prove to be broken, because druid does druid things, while Freya, Keeper of Nature has the potential to be as cancerous as most druid legendaries tend to be (though probably will take some working on)
I see potential in Cultivation.
We'll have to see how fast we can load up Cultivation to a low enough mana cost and how much tempo we have to sacrifice to do it. Not at all straight forward. Even treant druid back in witchwood wasn't all that great and that was a time where there were tons of treant synergy. More likely people will just play cultivation along with some treant cards like Living Roots to get it to a manageable mana cost.
Or they would eshew treant druid altogether. Ever since unholy DK dropped into the scene I see no reason whatsoever to bother playing aggro druid to any degree.
They've done this Treant -> Ancient conversion before, and each time I think it's destined for failure. If Ancients were classified as Treants too I could understand it, but they aren't. So instead, you lose access to the Treant, meaning your Mulchmunchers, your Aeroponics, etc. don't work anymore because you don't have the Treants anymore. The inherent idea - build up a board, then upgrade it - seems okay, I guess, but it's at odds with the underlying mechanics of the situation.
...that's not even getting into the whole "wide board wants to buff and swing for lethal, you're transforming so you can't attack with the upgraded stats" thing.
Oh yeah, absolutely. This is something that I've actually been talking about with a group of colleagues. Treant Druid goes in two diametrically opposite directions of cards that specifically want them to be Treants, and cards that transform them into Ancients. The groups just don't go together at all. Plot of Sin is even still in Standard and only works with Cultivation if you play it while Uninfused.
Which route do you want Treants to take? Wanting them to be Treants for payoff cards, or transforming the Treants into other things? I don't care which one, but they shouldn't attempt to do both. I don't mind trying to branch an established archetype in a different direction, but this doesn't feel like the right way to do it. What you're left with with these two different directions of Treant support cards are two disjointed archetypes that are trying to fit square pegs into round holes.
At this point maybe they should make Treant an official minion type - then they can do whatever they want with Ancients and they'll still be classified as Treants. This even has the side-effect of instantly creating another minion type to potentially mess around with for Battlegrounds.
My thought is that instead of making Treant a type, you make Plant the type and then all Treants and Ancients just have the Plant type.
I do like this idea. Having a plant minion type would also make legendary minions like Goru the Mightree, Splintergraft and Lucentbark more interesting, even though they kinda look like Ancients
