Dean Ayala and Chadd Nervig spoke a bit about how XP is calculated for Hearthstone's new progression system that launches later today.
- Experience gains are time-based.
- Individual games have an XP cap at the 30-minute mark.
- Blizzard says the majority of XP for players will come from quests. This does not apply to the hardcore.
- Each mode has a different value of experience gain. Ranked Constructed appears to be the highest.
- There is currently no cap to how much XP you can earn in a single day outside of the per hour caps.
- This will change to counter bots.
- The limit will be something almost no one will see with natural play.
XP Per Hour for Progression 2.0
These are the known values for XP/Hour for Hearthstone's game modes.
- 400 XP/Hour for Ranked Standard
- 400 XP/Hour for Ranked Wild
- 300 XP/Hour for Battlegrounds
Quote From Dean Ayala There are different values for different modes, winning matters. XP is time-based. Ranked Wild/Standard is around 400/Hour. Outside of the very hardcore player, majority of XP comes from quests.
Wanted to find a balance between rewarding players just for playing, but making it so most rewards were still easily attainable through daily objectives as opposed to having to play for hours on end.
Is there a cap on how much XP you can earn per day ala the old 100 gold cap per day?
Not yet, but planning to implement one to disincentivize bots. Goal is to create something almost no one ever runs into with natural play. Ran out of time for 19.0 to get something in, though.
Wait, if it's time based, does that mean roping the opponent increases your XP? Please tell me it's not so.
Was a mild concern, but of all the ways to get do we found time to have the fewest downsides. There is an XP cap on each game around 30 min. (@IksarHS)
Additionally, if you're losing, you're more incentivized to get out of that game quick, and on to a potentially-winning game, due to the bonus for winning. (@Celestalon)
Additionally, Chadd Nervig spoke about XP in Battlegrounds.
Quote From Chadd Nervig How does that stack up against XP earned for Battlegrounds? Since quests and achievements generally can't be completed through Battlegrounds, does that mean it has boosted XP gain?
There are quests and achievements for Battlegrounds. Battlegrounds is around ~300xp/hr. (BGs give rewards now, woo!)
This seems to contradict the information given in the patch notes, which implies only a very small portion of the quests and achievements can be completed in BGs, while the large majority is Ranked/Duels/Arena. Maybe this will be cleared up once we see the whole system (will we?)
There are several quests, and a whole huge section of achievements, specifically for Battlegrounds. The quests/achievements that rely on traditional Hearthstone gameplay naturally don't work in Battlegrounds.

As I see it there are 2 different types of information surrounding this. I entirely agree with you with being told the numbers for XP per hour in each of the game modes, and how much wins modify that. A simple table would do the job there. Note though, that the only reason I would like to be told this by the devs is because I don't expect this information to be displayed anywhere in-game.
However, details like how much a daily quest is worth and how much we need to move up the progression system will be made obvious to us at the very moment at starts mattering, i.e. when the patch hits. There really isn't much benefit to flooding us with those numbers beforehand, because it's not like we will make any different decisions based on knowing that information early.
In the end it is a progression system that is designed to span 4 months, so getting the precise numbers a few hours, days, or even weeks early really makes next to no difference.
to quote highest upvoted comment here "The more info it is shared about this new model the more confused I am."
Besides that there really is no point in explaining every little Number beforehand.
I agree - that part isn't explained at all. I guess** you get slightly more "per game/hour" if you win?
400 xp per ranked Hour seems really good when you compare it with the new "play 3 games with Druid,Hunter or Mage" quest that rewards 1000 xp (if they didn't changed).
If 1000XP = 60g on average then yes.
But will it be? We'll need to see how much XP is needed to get the available gold on the progression path, and how much for each additional level beyond it. Those might not be static either but scale heavily with each one. Kind of like level 1 to 2 is much easier than 49 to 50 in WoW.
The more info it is shared about this new model the more confused I am.
It seems fairly straightforward to me: it is likely that the largest, most profitable metric for Hearthstone is user engagement.
Think of it: the more you play, the more likely you are to encounter new needs, new indicators that you don't have everything you want. Seeing a cool card in play that you want to play with and have in your collection. Encountering a strategy that you want to beat. Seeing an achievement that you want to earn. Getting a theorycrafting idea that you want to try out.
Consider each of these things a ping. Blizzard is pinging your desire to spend money, over and over, during your gameplay.
The more pings a player experiences, the more likely they are to hand over cash. As such, spending cash fulfills a player's need.
In order to get more pings, you need to spend more time in the game. So Blizzard is moving away from a earning basis for content, and more into a playtime basis for content. The more you play, the more you get--instead of the more you achieve, the more you get.
It doesn't matter if you win games or if you lose, if you play ranked or if you play Battlegrounds. It's not about earning gold, finishing quests, or beating players at this point. They just want you in the game, spending time on their game, consistently. That's how they make you want to spend money on them.
Do we just keep forgetting Arena is a gamemode? Why do we not have the exp values for arena?
Because they know Arena players are smart enough to do the math for themselves.
I know, right? It triggered me too. It's not like we have 10 game modes so they don't want to throw too many numbers at us.
We don't know how much we get in Arena and Duels... I can only presume Casual will have same rewards as Ranked.
That is very true, than again, they didnt mention Duels either, and i would think you will be able to earn xp there, so maybe they didnt mention it ... cause :o
