Hearthstone's new core set has now been fully revealed and we've got more dragons! Before we jump into it though, here's a quick recap on the Core set:
- If you want to see all 29 new cards, check out this article.
- If you want to see all the cards in one place, you can visit our Core 2021 Expansion Guide.
- You can build decks with the new cards by visiting our deckbuilder, choosing your class, and selecting the format "Year of the Gryphon".
With that out of the way, let's talk about these three new Dragons that were revealed! If you want to see our last review on Dragons which featured Ysera, Malygos and Deathwing, click here!
A very interesting rework of the original Alexstrasza. The fact that you can aim at either minions and heroes now (yes, you can go face) is very relevant as it gives the card flexibility and opens up plenty of new scenarios and interactions. Just to name a few:
- If you're low on Health, you usually want to use Alexstrasza on yourself around 6/7 Health - with Alexstrasza the Life-Binder you'll be able to get around the same amount of healing most of the times; You'll be able to heal yourself even when you're beyond 15!
- Setting your opponent to 15 and dealing 8 damage to it is not the same thing, but at least this new Alex can chip away your opponent's armor and prevent some synergies like Shield Slam. There can be scenarios in which Midrange decks will run this card as a finisher against control.
- If Alexstrasza the Life-Binder is your only tempo play, you'll be able to play it and just nuke an opponent minion or heal yourself even if you don't need to; on the other hand, old Alexstrasza always asked you to choose a hero, so that sometimes you were forced to sacrifice your own life total in order to push stats and play an 8/8, which was quite the sad move to pull off. This is a niche interaction that doesn't happen so often, but it's still a great step forward.
- When targeting minions, it either works as a Healing Touch or a Flame Lance, which is quite a good effect since we also get board presence with an 8/8 body.
All in all, a very flexible and cool minion that the Hearthstone players will be more than happy to experiment with.
A meme card, just like its predecessor! Since it's a Start of the Game effect, unless both players willingly run a vanilla 7 man 8/8 (which isn't bad, but not great either since it has no synergies outside of the Dragon tribe and is just a beat stick), you won't be able to get the 15-seconds-per-turn effect.
A very fun card we expect to see lots of play in friendly matches or those rolling the dice and taking their chances at playing "speedstone" on the ladder, but we doubt it will see competitive play. Though, there will almost certainly be a tournament out there somewhere at some point that will require the card in everyone's decks.
The biggest upside of Nozdormu's fresh addition is that it was finally able to send the original Nozdormu away. That card caused so much trouble throughout the course of its existence!
While Onyxia is not a Dragon Aspect but just the daughter of Deathwing, she's still a big Dragon from Classic and we think she deserves to be in this review.
Now, for what regards the card itself, there are a few things that are worth talking about. First of all, it's a strictly better Onyxia: you won't get a full board of Whelps at the beginning of your turn and therefore you'll be able to play other minions from hand (Strongman for example); However, the interesting part is that it will trigger at the end of each turn, meaning that if your opponent won't be able to remove it, you'll get at least another swarm of 1/1s at the end of his turn and so on. This characteristic makes it also a better Shu'ma, which is not a great achievement since that minion saw very little play only in the niche Unseal the Vault Hunter, but it's still something.
Given all of this, we're quite confident that Onyxia the Broodmother will be able to find a home in some "big" archetypes, especially if we'll receive more cards like Commencement.

New Alex could be a cool additipn to Wild Quest Shaman decks, even if replaying her battlecries with Shudderwock is quite risky.
Thanks for the pointer to new Onyxia spawning Whelps every turn, I guess I'll try that Unseal the Vault deck in Wild after all :-)
Nozdormu powercreep is kinda annoying. Should have been 8 mana.
What bothers my OCD the most is the consistently inconsistent spelling of '(R|r)estore'. :(
Can someone please answer my questions please.
1. Will I have two versions of these 'updated' dragons? One for core set and one for Legacy set?
2. If I will only have one version, which will be the core set, what happens after the rotation next year? Will the dragons revert back to original?
You will receive the new versions with the free Core set regardless whether you own the old ones. These are not replacements for each other, you can actually use all versions of each in Wild. Not in Standard tho.
While this new Nozdormu is really a vanilla (7) 8/8, even if the effect goes off at the start of the game, it’s still something I am going to use a LOT. At least at release, for maybe the first month or so, and then whenever I’m bored and want to mess around!
I was thinking though... A way to get around the vanilla-ness of Nozdormu the Eternal would be to run Shadow Hunter Vol'jin. That way if you have few minions in hand later in the game you could play a low cost battlecry, Vol’jin it to get the battlecry again, and if you’ve guaranteed Vol’jin will pull Noz, your 2 drop (or whatever) becomes an 8/8.
I know that Vol’jin’s mostly been used for combo decks so far, but he has big potential in tempo swings like that too. Good or not, it sounds fun! So I’ll be experimenting for sue!
Good riddance to the old ones. Alex was too good (in combo decks), Onyxia was too bad, and Noz was too buggy.
the new Noz could still be buggy aswell though, not to same extent as odl nozdormu. But the timer on old noz (wihtout actula shenigans going on) has often not worked correctly.
But I can opt out of the new Noz, so his bugs will never affect me personally.
Alex will be just a really annoying card to have exist. If not run outright, which i think that will happen, Discover and random effects giving you 8 face damage is going to be quite annoying for your opponent.
I'm going to copy and paste this comment from Onyxia's page because I'm curious whether folks agree or disagree with me.
Yeah I also was mostly disappointed by the new art. As you mention, I think the wide angle of the dragons just doesn't work as well. When you are zoomed in on their faces, they look larger than life and you really get that feeling of power, awe, majesty, etc.
Also, they just look a bit too colorful and cartoony, much like the Shadow Hunter Vol'jin card, which again, pales in comparison to Vol'jin.
To be honest, I do think that the artwork left alot to be desired. Its not bad, but it's not epic. Compare both versions of Alexstrasza, old Alex looked like the real stuff (the golden animation is to die for) and this one just looks like she stubbed her tail mid flight.
Even old Deathwing looked real mean, staring down at us worthless mortals. New deathwing looks more like he's spewing lava after a particularly bad episode of chilli.
Its a small point to be sure, and I do not doubt the talent involved, but something looks suppressed here. Its as though that its entirely deliberate, a struggle to get an artform that's neither realistically epic and yet not downright cartoony.
I actually agree. While the new art is certainly awesome, the old ones were somehow more unique and iconic for each one. Maybe we only feel that way because we're used the old ones.
As for the cards themselves, I dig them. I never played WoW, but I imagine the new Onyxia feels much like a raid boss for your opponent, just endlessly spawning whelps until you deal with her. The new Nozdormu is just hilarious. It's almost like there's now a separate mode for "speed games" if you and your opponent are both down. And if it's just you, I guess a 7 mana 8/8 is ok?
I really want Onyxia to be good.
