The Alliance and Horde have been fighting ever since I was born. The sleepless nights from the distant sounds of battle echoed through our cave, savannah-like running just to grab a drink from the river, and the blood-soaked paths my father once walked on; Another casualty of this war. All these important memories to hold dear as my future arrived. My day is here; It is time to serve.
I had known my day was coming many moons ago. Our Warchief and his Warlords have been collecting all the new recruits to join the military ranks of the Horde ever since the new conflict began and I was, unfortunately, of age to equip the harness.
You could hear the caravan from miles away, the Kodos stomping in unison was not great for the ears though it did have a satisfying beat to it. The sounds grew louder as the group came into sight over the orange hills and a strong figure riding high looked familiar, and not in a good way.
You know things aren't great when Jorek Ironside rolls up to your home and drops off a War Supply Crate. He told me I had little time to prepare, but I must go through my new belongings and report to the nearest watch post.
I didn't have all day so I burst the crate open with my trusty shovel - wow, joining the Horde's fighting force is great!
I immediately noticed a soft mat that I could lay on. One of my, admittedly small, fears, when it came to fighting the Alliance, was sleeping on the rough ground. New recruits have it much better these days than when my father was fighting under the red banner. The carefully took off the carrying strap and laid it down. It's time to see what else is in this.
A Map! Excellent! Despite its close proximity, I had never been to the Barrens before and it would surely come in handy as I had no idea where the nearest watch post was.
If only I had been taught to read... I would have known this was only a set of clues to solve a puzzle.
Hydration! One of the biggest problems is having access to good, clean water. With this new vessel, I'll be able to fill up anywhere and feel confident in my ability to complete the trail.
The bag? A hammock. There aren't too many trees where we're going so I'll have to make sure to stay ahead of the pack so I can use it.
They really do think of everything in the Horde. When the sun sets, I'll be able to keep my head warm and it offers a bonus of camouflage for an Alterac invasion.
The next item in the crate was the most welcome of the bunch though because I've gotten my first payment! I've never had this much gold before, and it sure is heavy... Perhaps it can be used as a weapon as well as let me barter with the Goblins that control Ratchet, a town I have longed to visit.
Diving deeper into the crate I found my last item. It was a weather-proof harness that would protect me should we enter a territory with rain.
I was foolish to think this would be it, an important letter from our Warchief wrapped elegantly in Tauren hide, the scraps that cover the delicacy underneath.
With that, I'm prepared to find my way through the Barrens and I hope you'll join me. Let's go on an adventure in Forged in the Barrens and make it a memorable one as we train for the upcoming conflict - I just hope the Alliance won't see us coming.
Thank you to Blizzard for sending me the incredibly generous and sweet swag and the even sweeter crate - seriously, the Horde thinks of everything!
I was not told that I needed to share this with you, heck, I wasn't even aware it was coming, I just think it is some really cool stuff and that it should be showcased to everyone. You can see the Scholomance swag that Blizzard sent me last year over here.

Legend has it that as you lay your head on that blanket at night, faint, uproarious laughter can be heard in the distance.
I get that (Brode) reference!
Broad*
That's great Flux, congrats!
Gestures like these put a smile on my face 🙃 all that hard work by OoC staff and ofc Flux himself. It gets noticed by Blizzard, that's what matters.
"Four warriors". Nice typo :)
Anyway, since there are two more, like you guys said, it could be a clue to something.
Are there 4 watch towers by any chance? Or 4 mountain peaks? "Weather" and "whathering" might be pointing to something coming up on the horizon. Like a storm. Thunder lizards?
I know,i know, brains just make connections where there are none.
Ah, so I can explain that better, sorry, been ultra-busy and should have added another clarification!
They put that on there as a disclaimer because of US FCC regulations. Its more of an "if you show this off" type thing and not a "show this off or else". All of Blizzard's messaging on freebies (including stuff we get for giveaways) is always, hey if you want to share this stuff that's cool, but you must tell everyone we gave it to you as a gift.
I'll agree though, it is a bit sus haha.
I know they definitely appreciate my sharing, but I don't do it for them, I do it because I know people like to see this kind of stuff. Personally, I'm always impressed by some of the stuff the other Blizzard games give away and love to see what people get as promotional materials, and that goes for other games too. Some of the dev studios really hit it out of the park, and I feel like this Forged in the Barrens promo is one of the coolest things I've gotten yet.
I've also got this rad bar set from The Boomsday Project, among other swag. I don't believe I ever posted it anywhere.
Hopefully one day I can dedicate an entire room to all this epic Hearthstone loot. I definitely could already with the stuff I've purchased over the years and received as a gift from Blizzard, I just need to find a spare room!
Why did I notice the typo near the end of the letter they sent you? My brain is weird xD
There are actually several mistakes in the letter.
I actually tossed around the idea that rather than simple writing mistakes that they actually might be intentional and putting them together might form a secret code or something. They seem almost too intentional to be just mistakes. As Flux mentioned, us on the Content Squad and Staff team have tried to put the pieces into place, but haven't quite figured anything out. Maybe someone else can?
I noticed those as I was reading it. I was like what the hell is "whathered"? I'm not sure what keeping a weathered eye would mean eithered.
Those seem to be the ones, yeah. I noticed when Flux mentioned a few oddities and I read the whole thing over. I said my brain was weird because the first two were actually easy to miss if you're reading diagonally, but once I hit the third one I was like "something's not quite right" haha
Maybe it is a spoken accent. English is not my native language, but if maybe it is a Scottish accent. So maybe a dwarf wrote this letter.
I was also wondering, that if the mercenaries are lvling over the course of this year. What alliance terrority ranging from 20-40 suits best for the new expansions.
And as I am writing this post I remember the Hearthstone birthday post on Insta, the one with all the cake cardbacks and one Blackrock Mountain cardback. Could we revisit that area?
A Horde Dwarf?
There's a couple of oddities. It's either a simple mistake or there's something more to it and there are clues to find something.
A few of us were trying to put something together to no avail. I should probably ask someone if it was a mistake.
Maybe it's a Hunger Games type of thing and only four of you will make it out alive in the end!
Is it weird that the first thing I thought was Ben Brode when I saw the 3. Picture?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
First thing I thought when I saw the name of Ben Brode.
I see it as the equivalent of tiger carpet (but the Tiger is Ben Brode)
Nah, same here. As far as I am concerned, Ben Brode's photo might as well be put into each dictionary right next to the word 'flanel' 😄
