Hearthstone's newest patch has dropped some big news! Alterac Valley is the next Hearthstone expansion which is also the final expansion of the Year of the Gryphon.
Please remember that datamined content is subject to interpretation and may not be accurate. Nothing is final until Blizzard announces it.
Datamining the client reveals two new points of data that give us the Alterac Valley expansion. The first is a new card set that was added internally.
The second is a new type of booster pack that every expansion receives. This indicates this isn't going to just be a mini-set.
This isn't exactly surprising though. With the Horde and Alliance themes for the first two sets of this year, and the Year of the Gryphon roadmap we saw earlier this year showcasing a frosty land with red (Horde) and blue (Alliance) in conflict, we had a solid idea that we'd be visiting the same battleground that features a war between the two factions. Both the Frostwolf Clan, led by Drek'Thar, and the Stormpike Expedition, led by Vanndar Stormpike, claim the territory and have been fighting over it for quite some time.
What cards are you hoping to see in the next expansion?

I honestly can't imagine the power level of cards for the final set of the year (which typically have the strongest power since they are not in the rotation period for as long -- 1.25 years instead of 2 years as is with the first set of a year.)
While on the topic. When is blizzard going to address that very fact: end of year sets, even though they stick around for awhile, are typically "Worth" less since they don't stay in rotation as long. Seems like they should just have each set rotate after 2 years per set. Of course that would entail more work on their part...
I think it would be better to do years for 2 set rotations instead of 3, but that'd be a pretty major change.
It's a weird logic with set rotations that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me as well. And it's something that's been decided upon in the ancient times of Ben Brode. Most people got used to it, generally not questioning the whole concept much.
But things have changed greatly since, they have mini-sets and a core set - there's definitely a number of viable alternatives that could be considered.
I believe the HS-team does enough work, look at the basic set introduced last year. I dont know why you are assuming they dont.
Never said they did. I suggest re-reading and absorbing what is written instead of skimming through the post
Rotating sets every expansion would be too silly. It wouldn't be possible to have a huge shakeup at the start of the year.
I don't think there's much of a problem with some sets not lasting as long as they "should have". Imagine if we had an extra 8 months of Jade Lotus nonsense when that dropped with the December Mean Streets of Gadgetzan expansion? I'd rather not!
Looks like the next expansion got DEADTAMINED.
I deserve to go to hell for that.
By right the annoucement to the annoucement of the expansion should have dropped by now. But of course, they obviously wouldn't want it to steal the midset's thunder.
Nice mining, flux.
