Hearthstone's Alterac Valley card reveal season has gotten off to a rocky start.
If you had of asked me last night at 3 AM Eastern what my take was on it when the scheduled still wasn't published, it was quite literally going to be "Fractured in Alterac Valley's Card Reveal Seasons is Off to a Fantastic Start With Superb Communication From Blizzard". As you can see after a little bit of sleep, I've decided to cut the sarcasm and get straight to the point. What the fuck.
If you don't read the whole article I do want to point out that as this was being finalized, links started to appear on the official website for the card reveal schedule which fixes the original problem of the first few reveals being impossible to find due to the poor communication. Bobby Kotick is an Ass
The Hearthstone team got a rude awakening yesterday which was quite the bombshell. The Wall Street Journal, not to be confused with the Wall Street Bets reddit, released an article titled Activision CEO Bobby Kotick Knew for Years About Sexual-Misconduct Allegations at Videogame Giant. Understandably, Hearthstone team members were not happy about the reveal, with Cora and Celestalon tweeting the following shortly after the news broke yesterday. (Archive link, WSJ has a Paywall)

Announcements & Patch Arrive
If you paid any attention to Out of Cards yesterday afternoon, you were bombarded with tons of information about the new expansion and patch that arrived at the same time. Our front page was all super fresh content and anything else risked pushing the cinematic and initial expansion coverage down to page 2. It's both a great and not so great thing when that happens because it means its an entertaining day but also we've got a small problem where folks might miss some of the content, which is unfortunate to say the least.
Business as usual is what general consensus was here at Out of Cards. Then the reveal countdowns went up and they were missing links to where we could find cards.
And that didn't change.
If you've been a part of a Hearthstone reveal season before and you've been a hard refresher of the official Hearthstone site, you may have come across changing countdowns for community card reveals. This has been something that has plagued us in the past with countdowns moving times, changing URLs, or even disappearing altogether! So I can't say we were very surprised to see no URLs attached to the countdowns initially, assuming they'd get added in later on in the day, closer to when reveals started.
Nope.
Here We Go Again
At 3 AM Eastern, we still didn't have any countdowns. In the afternoon on expansion reveal day, I had said to our staff that maybe this was intentional and the Hearthstone team was doing a different reveal season and not relying on external actors. It makes sense if you think about it for a moment. Last reveal season was plagued by the California law suit and caused the reveal season to effectively be cancelled with Blizzard pulling out of their remaining solo reveals and several community members that had card reveals, notably Alliestrasza, Lt. Eddy, and Trump all decided to not host their reveals.
This caused plenty of unrest in the community and although it was done in support of those at Blizzard, there was a chance someone in charge of reveal season or marketing wasn't happy about not getting the cards out there and seemingly being held hostage by revealers. By moving to a Blizzard-driven reveal season, there was no chance cards wouldn't be revealed. Well, I was wrong.
Reveal season started off at the stated time and no one knew where the card was going to be. Dun Baldar Bunker ended up being revealed by QiGe and the next card reveal, Templar Captain, went smoothly too if you knew DDaHyoNi was going to reveal it - or just opened up links to all the previous people who have done reveals and hoped it was one of them.
Reveal season started off looking like the Ferrari F1 pitwall.
The lack of communication is unacceptable.
Don't get me wrong, the position that Blizzard employees and the Hearthstone team is in is by no means positive. The leadership of the company needs to get their shit together and take a hike so new people can be put in charge that don't have years of ignoring problems at the company. I disagree with their idea of not telling us where card reveals are. This hurts the community, this hurts content creators, and this is going to hurt the way the expansion is perceived if everyone is tilted.
I don't know who is responsible, but I know that there are several individuals who are not happy things are being masked. There are people I've received messages from asking what I know about what is going on and I've legitimately never seen them angry before. We're off to a bad start to a reveal season for an expansion with a ton of potential. Who doesn't love that we're having a Horde vs Alliance Honor Points war?

As reported by the Washington Post, a call for resignation has been made by Activision Blizzard shareholders.
Surprise, Bobby.
This isn't a massive deal in the grand scheme of things though as the call for resignation was made by the Strategic Organizing Center Investment Group which communicates for roughly 3.8 million of the 779 million Activision Blizzard shares. A drop in the bucket that is the shareholders of the company and so the weight they have on the situation is easily ignored.
Ultimately, Bobby Kotick has been at the helm of the company during all the sexual harassment, mistreatment, and rape that has taken place at Blizzard and yes, he should resign because he failed everyone there and it is disheartening to see the board of directors rally behind him, though it shouldn't come as a surprise when you consider just how much money he has helped make the company and its shareholders in his time there.

Hearthstone Wasn't the Only Major Announcement Yesterday
It feels like the Wall Street Journal article was timed to hit at one of the worst possible times for Blizzard, which is a massive slap in the face to the employees that are creating the great gaming experiences at the company. The current leadership doesn't care, they're psychopaths that will publish a shit press release and pretend like they're doing anything of value to anyone.
Blizzard also released their Season of Mastery World of Warcraft Classic branch on November 16.
The release was inevitable, and those that put it out there did choose the correct time to do it, I'd have done the same thing because it would be one hell of a way to interrupt the company as a whole, but that also doesn't mean it isn't a dick move.

It Gets Better, Sort Of
Ben Heathstone, or Ben Hearthstone if you've never read his Twitter username and been introduced to the "cannot unsee" club (sorry, not sorry), tweeted this morning about having a "Hearthstone thing" being cancelled. We aren't sure if that's a card reveal or some other kind of spotlight, but it looks like there is a chance the Hearthstone team may be limiting their expansion partnerships right now and only going with part of their originally scheduled plans. That's pure speculation and should definitely not be taken as truth, but Decktech did mention that he hoped they could find another chance to work together.

It isn't all the links though, we're still waiting for the bulk of them. Overall, I feel for the people of Blizzard but I believe this was a bad way to start the reveal season. It'll be sad when Cora ends up getting a third nickel when Bobby is still running the show in March or April of 2022 when the next Hearthstone expansion is announced and some other negative Blizzard headline comes out on the same day, because you know it is going to happen.
That's probably going to be labelled as a shitty take because "how dare I not sit behind Blizzard and give them my full support through their tough times", but that's not the reality. At the end of the day, I have a community to take care of that'll be my priority.
Activision Blizzard (ATVI) Stock was down just over $7, or around 10%, from Tuesday morning from their 5 Day peak of $71.96 USD, trading at $64.67 as of publishing.

As expected, the official Hearthstone gallery has not been updated for overnight reveal URLs.
I'm disappointed that I called that ahead of time.
When I saw the article yesterday about Bobby K, it surprises me not one bit. Because even if he went on to tell everyone that he knew nothing of all the sexual misconducts, we'd not only not believe him, we'd just tell him that it doesn't matter because it happened under his watch and he should take responsibility regardless.
Yes, its incredible that he's still in the seat when any decent person would have just resigned or use the 'leave to do better stuff' excuse. I mean, its not like he needs the job or the money anyway, his one bonus payment can basically retire an entire neighborhood. If activision-blizz knows whats right, they'd can his arse and get someone that is actually passionate about games for once.
Its amazing actually. All that is required is for activision-blizz to conduct a transparent assessment of sexual misconduct throughout the company and just cut off those that are found to have violated the rights of others. At this point you'd think the entire management team is up on their arse in this and if such a thing were conducted we'd lose 80% of the entire board right away. And I would call it a 100% positive result.
Back to hearthstone. I think the marketing department got wind that something was going to go wrong and therefore took the safe approach, which is to not announce who will be revealing their card so they can pretend that the community isn't dropping reveals like the last time. Scummy, but that's one approach I guess.
At this point they might as well do a card dump and cut the embarrassment altogether.
When I saw the article about the great Bobby K I was shocked. I couldn't believe my hero could have known about these things and I might need to take the poster of him down from my bedroom wall.

In all seriousness I do feel for Team 5. Reveal season is supposed to be a fun thing and it's been marred by events beyond their control twice now.
I think the best approach is for card revealers to have the chance to quietly or publicly withdraw if they wish without negative consequences from the developer or the community.
And for those that do reveal, and may have already put a lot of effort into it, to also be free from community criticism. It's not their nor Team 5's fault regarding historical allegations within Blizzard.
Past wrongs need to be righted insofar as possible, corrective cultural changes made and let's enjoy existing and new content.
Damn, the way cards aren't revealed on schedule is bad. I don't know what the HS officials did, but I'd like to have a card reveal time. I'm about to shoot the messanger if my card reveal experience is broken
I get that it sucks for people who run fansites, but let's not forget that we are not owed card reveals. They do it primarily to generate publicity, and secondarily to generate good will with influencers. Right now they are probably trying to avoid publicity, so that overrides the secondary concern.
The Blizzard publicity machine has dropped every single ball it's been handed for the past 12 months, so I would not be too surprised to learn that everyone who used to handle this stuff is no longer handling this stuff. Where I work, if a publicity campaign went anything like the Mercs launch, heads would be rolling left and right. You may find the situation "unacceptable," but I suspect there may be some very practical and logistical reasons for the radio silence.
It sucks for everyone, not just the people running community sites.
This is a complete departure from the norm for reveals with no communication about what is going on - though the bad communication part isn't exactly new for the Hearthstone team.
Card reveal season exists for one sole reason: it sells the game. No one is going to buy Hearthstone packs if they have no idea what is going to be inside of them. One can count that as publicity or good will for sure, but there is absolutely no reason why they shouldn't make it known where these reveals are going to take place.
As of right now, we know where the next two reveals are coming from - Lt. Eddy and PCGamer. Maybe we'll get lucky and a couple of more will be added afterward, but if my suspicions are correct, we'll go into the night without knowing where anything is coming from.
All they need to do is fill out the URLs of where we can find reveals and there would be zero problems. If they don't want to tell us, then drop the countdowns since they are absolutely pointless. Last night when we had the Chinese reveal at 3 AM, it wasn't like the countdown meant the card magically appeared in the gallery afterward - that was many hours later. It's sad.
I'm sure the whole set will be up on playhearthstone a few days before launch. That's plenty of time for players to make an informed decision about the purchase. This slow trickle of hype has never been necessary -- and recently it has been arguably detrimental.
Obviously I'm here absorbing the content like everyone else, but it's not affecting my purchasing decisions in any way.
Yeah this complaining about a "lack of communication" is silly. Most of the devs are stuck right in the middle of the whole debacle.

Not surprised that Kotick knew, not the slightest. I doubt he will be forced out though. The pretty much only chance this will happen is if the stock price will dive further or he becomes a legal risk and the large shareholders start to perceive him as a liability. Only if Blackrock, Vanguard and their likes turn on him he will be fired. That being said I think it is wrong to pin the entire sorry state of Blizzard on him, but getting rid of him would be a start.

I appreciate you (and everyone who liked your comment) for the kind words. I know, and plenty of folks on the team took over some duties earlier over the past few days. We don't have people for around the clock coverage with stuff though and not all of our card reveal tooling is very accessible to the team so I sort of have to be here (plus there are bills that need to be paid).
I am proud that we've got a great enough team that I can bow out if needed as proven earlier this week and past weekend. I'm hoping to take a week off come December, as I'd like everyone else on staff to as well, right around the holidays, where anything we do publish on the site will all be pre-scheduled - just a bit of a shame since December is the best month for ad revenue lol.
Since starting the site, I haven't had any time off even though I've had a few attempts to make it happen. At the end of the day though, we're behind in the grand scheme of things and any time taken off just delays stuff even more and its a bummer. I know how important it is to take time for yourself and I certainly don't practice what I preach, but it really does just come down to there is no good time. If I get deep into something that isn't immediately content related, which happens more than I'd like but that's also just the reality of wearing many hats, usually our front page takes a hit for the day.
No chance of getting a mini army of folks to cover this bit? A couple of hours 3 times a year for a badge on the site?
