The Voyage to the Sunken City expansion has just launched, and to celebrate this milestone we're doing an event called Wild Week. Over the next 10 days, there will be one guide a day, one for each class, using as many new cards as possible. Today, we're going to be looking at Odd Demon Hunter in Voyage to the Sunken City.

Odd Demon Hunter has existed in Wild since the class got added in Ashes of Outland, and with the latest expansion it has gotten a key new addition: Multi-Strike. It allows you to go face while also keeping board control for your minions, synergizes with Dreadprison Glaive, and furthermore is a Fel spell and allows the deck to run Metamorfin and have enough Fel spells to activate it consistently. The deck also got Pufferfist, which is good in general from attacking and becomes a Consecration with Multi-Strike. If you liked Odd Demon Hunter before and want to play a version with new cards, consider giving this deck a try.

Past decks in Wild Week can be found here.

If you want to suggest a specific deck archetype to be covered for a particular class, you can comment it to this article and it may be covered during Wild Week or after.

Now, let's get into a guide on playing the deck. It's going to go through major overarching strategies to keep in mind, how to mulligan, gameplay tips on key synergies, and card choices.

Strategies

Mostly, you have to control the board with your 1 drops and hero power for a while but at some point start prioritizing face damage to use your burst to win.

Board Control - You can use your hero power and weapons to control the board and allow your snowballing minions like Battlefiend and Lowly Squire to survive longer.

Going Face - If you see that you have a lot of attack gain or other burst like Leeroy Jenkins in hand, enough to win in a few turns if you go all face, you may want to stop using minions and your hero power for trades and instead go face.

This deck is very aggressive and has a high burst potential from hand to win games even if you have lost control of the board. However, it's important to get some amount of damage in with your minions so your attack gain can win in the end. You can often do both board control and going face with cards like Multi-Strike and Dreadprison Glaive.

Mulligans

  • If you have Metamorfins in hand, keep them and if you don't have any Fel spells, mulligan the rest of your hand to try and get one. If you do have a Fel spell, mulligan the rest of the cards normally.
  • Keep Battlefiends.
  • Keep Lowly Squires.
  • Keep a Mana Burn and a Multi-Strike if you have 1-cost minions in hand already.
  • Keep a Dreadprison Glaive if against a deck that plays or summons 3 hp minions early.

Gameplay

The key to playing this deck well is to combo your attack and attack synergy cards together.

Below are gameplay tips regarding many of the synergies in this deck and how to use them effectively.

Battlefiend can gain attack twice in a turn with Multi-Strike, while Lowly Squire can only gain one attack a turn.

Leeroy Jenkins is usually not played for tempo because of the whelps he summons, but if you have Pufferfist on the board you can destroy those whelps immediately. In some cases, playing Leeroy for tempo like this may be good.

Try to time Mana Burns either in the very early turns to prevent your 1 drops from being removed or to prevent some specific card - for example, you would time it to disrupt a Freeze Shaman's turn 6 so they couldn't play a Snowfall Guardian, but turn 5 if you know they have the coin.

Don't be afraid to use Fury (Rank 1) before it upgrades if you don't have any other Fel spells in hand to active Metamorfin.

You may want to hold Stiltstepper for turn 6 to have a higher chance of getting its bonus effect if you have other good cards to play earlier.

You should be hero powering almost every turn. So for example, if you played a 1 drop turn 1, it's better to play another 1 drop and hero power turn 2 than to play 2 1 drops. If you play too many cards and don't use your hero power you may run out of resources too quickly.

Acrobatics can draw 4 cards if you play the 2 you draw first in the same turn, so it's better to save it for later if possible and you have other cards to play first.

Always try to get Dreadprison Glaive's effect off if you can, sometimes even if you have to trade one of your minions suboptimally.

Card Choices

This section is going to go through the main packages of cards in the deck. Each package has cards that help the deck with a specific goal. When playing the deck, it's useful to know what purposes each card serves and what other cards in the deck have synergy with it or help achieve the same purpose. This section might also be useful if you're interested in the reasoning for why each card was included in the deck.

So, what’s the best replacement now that Multi-Strike costs 2? Any thoughts?

Not sure yet, but the deck is a lot less powerful now. Waiting for the miniset to potentially give a good odd cost card. In the meantime you can play Demon Companion.

I tried that, but of course that means fewer Fel cards to trigger Metamorfin. I’m wondering about Eye Beam—it’s 1-mana on draw and can maybe get through a taunt, but of course “lifesteal, minions only” isn’t a great match for an aggro deck.
