The Dead of Knight - Card Design Competition Discussion Thread
Competition Theme: The Dead of Knight
The Death Knights have arisen, and now we serve them... in our job to make them new cards. Your card must be a Death Knight card, but you've got up to three different routes to go for a valid entry!
- Rotten to the Corpse
- Design a card with Corpse synergy.
- The most straightforward way to do is to just make a card that spends Corpses, but there are a number of other ways you can go about this.
- Design a card with Corpse synergy.
- Triple Threat
- Create a triple-Rune card.
- Hint: Look at the existing triple-Rune cards that Death Knight has to get a better understand of what constitutes as a triple-Rune card.
- Create a triple-Rune card.
- House of the (Un)Dead
- Design a card with Undead synergy/interaction.
- Your card (if it's a minion) doesn't need to be an Undead, but merely just being an Undead will not count. Otherwise, you're free to go whatever route you want as long as it uses direct interaction with Undeads.
- Design a card with Undead synergy/interaction.
While you're more than welcome to try to make a card that fulfills all 3 prompts, this is fully optional and will likely prove to be a challenge.
We're kicking off Season 6 with a fun competition all about Death Knights. There's no prize for winning this one, but it'll be a sign of things to come.
As always, I can be reached through Discord or here on the site via PM if you have any issues to report.

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to our season 6 prologue competition.
We're back! :D We'll get in contact with Moondreamer and R about starting their winner-themes properly later, but for now enjoy this special Death Knight comp!
Here's my idea: a 3-Frost 3/3/3 that spends 3 Corpses to gain Spell Damage +3 haha
Regarding our hiatus: Shadows has unfortunately been (mostly) unavailable for a while with his new job taking up a lot of time, so it will fall on Demon and I to keep things running. There might be some hiccups as we get acclimated to doing more of the heavy lifting, so keep that in mind D:
I'm sorry we kind of left everyone in the dark for so long.
One important change we have for this season are the fact that your card descriptions now appear in the finalist voting. We've ran too many seasons without any changes to the system, and this should have some sort of effect. It may not be to everyone's cup of tea, but we're open to experimenting to see what works and what doesn't.
And also, we've taken the liberty of reducing the number of finalists from 8 to 6, which came about because of the number of entrants we received were dwindling, and 8 finalist often meant that about half of all the entries ended up appearing on the finals, and this also meant that poorly designed cards were more likely to make it to that stage. Reducing the number of finalists in correspondence to the lower number of entries should accommodate for this. In reality, this shouldn't make it that much harder to reach the finals. If we see an upsurge in entrants, then we will change this back.
And also, here are some cards.
Strik's powers are as follows:
Strik's effect allows you to stop spending Corpses when you want to, but I might end up removing this aspect just for consistency with other Death Knight cards.
Quick, simple idea.

Hello everyone! I'm happy to see that custom card competitions are back.
This is my initial design for this special competition:
The idea behind Sai Shadestorm is to allow a possible 3-Frost archetype to play a slower gameplan, more focused on generating value with Discover and copy effects. While this is certainly a strong effect, I think the downside of losing access to your weapons, an important asset of Death Knights, makes for an interesting tradeoff.
It also allows for some interesting deckbuilding choices. Do you automatically discard the idea of playing weapons? The card can come down on turn 5 at the earliest, so could you maybe play a few early game weapons until you get to that turn? Just something interesting to think about.
Having such a downside on the card text also allows "protection" from other Death Knight decks, such as something like 3-Blood, from finding ways to discover this card and abusing it, as they would have to suffer the major downside anyway.
Finally, I think it works very well thematically (A powerful Frost Death Knight encasing you in ice to protect you) and it's a nice progression/evolution of my Lord Marrogwar, the design I proposed for the Death Knight competition we had last season, back when we hadn't seen the class yet!
I made a fun custom expansion called Holidays at Un'Gol Island. You should check it out :)
Wow, what a nice surprise! Big thanks to Demon and linkblade for taking up the banner and organising these competitions! Also fingers crossed for Shadows and everything working out in the best possible way for him.
I've been longing for a high impact 3B card that capitalises on Corpses since I've started playing the new class so why not create one myself? Here are my first ideas:
The minion version is a neat solution for those games where you really want to play that Mutanus the Devourer / Patchwerk / Alexandros Mograine before your opponent does - if you are able to accumulate enough Corpses during the early game, that is.
The spell version mainly aims at The Sunwell shenanigans and toys with the characters Blood Elf origins.
I notice I am confused. Something I believe isn't true. How do I know what I think I know?

First time posting one of these for the discussion.
I love Frost Rune decks that grind out value forever. I love casting 3+ copies of Frostwyrm's Fury in a game.
Edit: Second Attempt.
Feedback about not needing more card generation was very valid. This time, I figured I'd attempt to go down a direction with alleviating hand size issues. Generating huge boards isn't something that FFF death Knight is really known for, this may be outside its themes, but since it is still spell-related at heart hopefully its not crazy.
Thanks for the original feed back as well!
The competition seems to be running slowly (although I have methods of combating this season and you'll see one soon enough), so here's some early feedback.
I think the card in concept is fine, even though Death Knight 6, 8, or 10-Cost spells, so I'm not sure what would happen if you tried to play the card with that many Corpses. Additionally, its only 7-Cost spell is Frostwyrm's Fury and its only 9-Cost spell is The Scourge, and it's very unlikely for Death Knight to ever have a spell of every Cost from 0 to 10 in Standard rotation at any point. I would say making it Discover any Death Knight card could fix it, but then it becomes a fairly consistent way of generating extra copies of strong minions.
Also, I'm not sure what's up with that name, but you should change it.
I like the effect, and I like the usage of the Duels character into Constructed Hearthstone. That's thinking smarter, not harder!
My only little gripe is that later down the line, and it may even be relatively soon, building an FFF deck that doesn't use weapons may not be that difficult (unless there happens to be a new weapon that they for some reason absolutely need to run) which would end up circumnavigating the downside entirely.
Good use of character, and good effect.
I personally prefer the minion version myself because I think it's a bit more original than applying to spells, and also because it seems stronger to me.
The first thing I want to say is, welcome aboard! We're glad to have new faces around, and we know that it might be a bit intimidating for some people to get into, so please do not hesitate to ask me or Link or anyone else here any questions if you feel the need to. As for your card…
I'm someone who plays FFF Death Knight pretty regularly, I can definitely tell you that it doesn't need this amount of mass spell-generation. Generating enough spells for my deck is generally not a problem. Frost Strike and Lady Deathwhisper normally gives me enough extra reach or stalling just fine, so I feel like this probably won't see play. Hand size is sometimes also something that they have to keep in mind since they're holding a lot of combo spells and play a fair amount of draw, which will end up limiting this card's usability even more.
The card also should do something at baseline so it still does something even if you have no Corpses. I realize that having no Corpses at a point where you'd want to play the card is not exactly a likely scenario, but the card should still do something if that happens. It's just a part of Hearthstone's design philosophy.
@Demonxz95 - there's apparently something called a F.R.A.N.K list (friends, relatives, acquaintances, neighbours, kid contacts). At first it was an omage to Ferenc Liszt (in Polish), but then I discovered the list and thought it was cool. So yeah... he's on someone's F.R.A.N.K. list.

Good to see the comps are back with some nice changes now, so I'll try to participate on the less busy and troublesome weeks. So, here's some old designs of mine I that fits here perfectly (And in case it's not clear, Construct Quarter is 3 Unholy, but Herthcards doesn't have a Rune layout for Locations yet, so I had recur to good old Paint. Tell me if it's interesting enough and I'll make a decent version in photoshop later).
Do you also like Elden Ring? Then you should check out my Elden Ring inspired Duels Heroes!
We are currently aware of the fact that Death Knight is not currently an option to choose for when submitting cards, and also that Path of Arthas and March of the Lich King can't be submitted as sets the card belongs to either.
We'll let you know when we've got that all situated.
Death Knight has now been added to the list of classes you can pick.
Path of Arthas and March of the Lich King are also now options for the expansions.
I've not been active on the site lately, but a new custom card competition is as good a reason as any to return.
Disclaimer: if the above is factually incorrect or complete rubbish it is definitely both intentional and comedy genius.
Decided to make one card per prompt, new to this so hopefully I'm not breaking any rules 😎
Each use of the location adds a new trigger. So first use will raise one corpse per turn. Second use two corpses. Two uses on both location four corpses per turn. Risen zombies are standard 2/2 zombies which leaves no corpse.
Sorry for bad edit but I had to add the Unholy runes as the software do not had them for locations.
-=alfi=-
I wanted to make a new build-around card for Triple Frost.
One of it's main weaknesses is the difficulty to gather many Corpses, therefore I think it's balanced.
What do y'all think about it?
Feedback time!

Hey, thanks for the feedback!
Just wanted to point that my card goes infinite if you have a corpse to spend each turn.
Round 2 of feedback
Blood Empowerment is a really funky removal for Blood. It's a bit on the weird side, but I kinda like it. It could be a Shadow spell when you look at Blood Boil, Corpse Explosion, or Blood Tap. Then again, Death Strike, Obliterate, and Vampiric Blood are typeless, so it doesn't really matter. There's Team 5 being inconsistent again!
I'm afraid I don't really like Construct Quarters too much. Pure Unholy generally doesn't have that much trouble generating more Corpses than they know what to do with, and I don't think there would be much of a point in running this. If you were to do something with this, I would suggest the card do something else in addition to gaining Corpses, but I personally prefer Blood Empowerment.
I don't really like this too much. The effect being on a Rare feels very weird since the effect itself feels Legendary (the fact that it stacks with each usage further contributes to this feeling). Unholy probably doesn't have that much trouble keeping this thing afloat.
If you were to tweak this design though, you should capitalize Corpse.
Feedback time! And once again a little late - I still haven't learned to make time on Wednesday :/
machadogps - This is neat, and definitely solidifies Frost's strength in card draw. That being said, Defrost already covers the "draw a card; spend a Corpse to draw more" space rather neatly. If that didn't exist I'd vote 5-stars for sure, but the overlap is a downer.
Alfi - Really surprised the Death Knight didn't come with a Location, but I guess we'll see what the mini-set brings. That being said, this is super strong. A "for the rest of the game" effect on a card that's already kind of difficult to interact with, that can be stacked up without additional resources…that's a recipe for frustration in my opinion.
Nobudy - Cool to see your first post coming here with us; to that I say "Welcome!" :D Your cards look quite solid: they seem fairly balanced, they're interesting, and I want to play with them haha. I agree with the others that Death's Advance or Coldtusk Fisherman will go farther than Raise Undead, 'cause some will look down on it for being on the strong side. Death's Advance has the best art, so I say that one.
NerdyMcNerd - Welcome back :) I'm not a fan of this, to be totally honest, because I feel it undermines the few cards that already allow you to gain Corpses off enemies, like Soulstealer. Twisting Nether-on-a-stick not withstanding, the ability to feed off enemy minions also helps make it stand out, and Gorefiend takes away from that, in the same set.
MrRhapsody - I had to read Blood Empowerment a couple times to understand how your card functioned, probably because I'm a dummy lol. That being said, after finally getting it - it's temporary Mana-cheating until the minion dies from the blood-letting - I find it very strong, unique, and cool. Definitely go with that one.
Dolphinslayer - Welcome to the Discussion thread :) I actually like Sylalleas Frostwind - My main problem is that the text is 5 lines long, which should not happen in a Constructed card. Shouldn't be happening at all - looking at you, Duels - but that's a matter for another time. Every word looks important, though, so I'm not sure how to fix this…
anchorm4n - The spell version of Koltira seems more befitting their Blood Elf nature, as you noted, but from a gameplay standpoint it's a lot to ask. Triple-Blood doesn't generate too many Corpses, and what are you planning to spend them on? The minion one seems better for tempoing out something a little sooner, so I guess that's the pick.
Moondreamer - No pun intended, but this is very cool. I would consider playing it in a heartbeat - probably my favorite card here. No additional notes; I think you're good to go.
Neoguli - Proper names are for Legendaries - amusing or otherwise, it needs to be changed. The gameplay effect is interesting, though - obviously Unholy can generate the bigger numbers of Corpses, despite only having one major expensive spell (The Scourge). With the Death Knight's spell pool being so low, Discover is overkill…but what if it said "from any class"? Now things can get spicy. Just my thought.
Demonxz95 - My favorite is Postmortal Servitude - it's a nice DK-version callback to Omega Assembly. Blood Moon isn't very interesting to me, and Strik is much too complicated in my opinion.
Glad to see this return, although I almost missed it!
I don't think I'll have time to give or receive feedback, so I've already submitted a card I made a little while ago.
Good luck, everyone!
A little less than 24 hours to go! If you haven't submitted yet, you're running out of time.
Submissions are closed, but don't forget to check out the cards - good luck to everyone in the voting!
Darn, I'm starting to make a habit of missing the first prompt each season. After the post last week I didn't expect the comps this soon so this was pretty much the one week I didn't check (until a couple hours too late obviously), so I'm afraid I'll have to wait for next week.
Don't worry, I'll still be voting. And i'd also like to share what would have been my concept for this week:
It slows down the battlefield to give you time to focus on building your board while harassing your opponent with spells. That + your Hero Power (since hitting another minions will leave both Frozen) should give you somewhat of an advantage despite the effect working both ways.
Don't feel too bad about missing this comp. It's just a prologue for season 6 and there's no prize for winning it. The next competition is when season 6 actually starts and formula of winners picking the next comp themes return
Finalist voting starts in about half an hour - keep in mind that we're dropping the total number of finalists from 8 to 6 this season. Good luck to everyone in the voting!
Congratulations to my colleague, Demon! You didn't win anything of value, per se, but your card will live on in the Winner's Gallery nevertheless lol :P
Every person I've shown the card to has stated how much they loved it, and I really couldn't imagine that such a simple card would garner such an overwhelmingly positive reaction on all accounts.
Congrats Demon! Those simple looking designs are my favorite but I know they're hard to come up with. Great job!
