Hearthstone has announced a new format to exist alongside Standard and Wild, and that is the Twist format. It's being added to the game "later this month" although no exact day was given. Additionally, at various times on June 22nd is when many Hearthstone personalities will gather around to demonstrate the mode and you will also be given a chance to earn some Twitch drops.
Twist is basically a game format where the valid card pool will change over time. We're not entirely sure how everything works yet, but what we have learned is:
- It's replacing the Classic format entirely.
- Ranked rewards for this month will take your rank from both Classic and Twist into account, but going forward, this will not be the case.
- You will be able to earn Ranked rewards from it, just like Standard and Wild.
- Twist formats will be changed regularly "but not necessarily with every season".
- Twist will sometimes have some downtime.
- The special rule for the Beta period is that your deck is not allowed to have any Neutral cards.
Quote From Blizzard Starting in Patch 26.6, coming later this month, Hearthstone will be replacing the Classic Mode with a new Mode called Twist!
Classic Hearthstone, With a Twist
Twist is a Hearthstone ladder Mode with regularly rotating seasons, each with a twist on the rules! Twist formats can include curated card pools and special rulesets. These formats are sure to bring back some of your favorites, but in a new setting with a new meta to crack!
We already have some fun and nostalgic Twist formats planned for the rest of the year, but we also want to hear from you about Twist formats you’d like to see, or if you end up loving one so much you want to see us bring it back. Twist formats are planned to change regularly, but not necessarily with every season. Twist also might be deactivated from time to time we prepare for the next upcoming season. You can find Twist in the Hearthstone menu, where Classic used to be, and you always check the current Twist season’s rules and eligible card pools from the deck selection screen.
Twist Timing
With Patch 26.6, Twist will be launching in its Beta. You’ll start your Twist climb from the beginning, at Bronze 10, and that first season will be a short season, lasting until July 1. You’ll also be able to earn ranked rewards from the Twist ladder, like Standard or Wild. June’s ranked rewards will be based on your highest ladder rank across Standard, Wild, Classic, or Twist. Once the Twist Beta kicks off, the official Leaderboards will switch from Classic to Twist.
The Twist Beta is planned for June and July. After the Beta, Twist will be temporarily deactivated for a short time while we prepare for the official Twist launch, coming soon!
Beta Format: New Age
Due to the short June season, there will be one format for both the June and July Beta seasons of Twist. That format is called “New Age,” a new evergreen format that includes the Core Set, plus all sets from Ashes of Outland forward. That means, during this Beta period, it will consist of:
- Core
- Ashes of Outland
- Scholomance Academy
- Madness at the Darkmoon Faire
- Forged in the Barrens
- United in Stormwind
- Fractured in Alterac Valley
- Voyage to the Sunken City
- Murder at Castle Nathria
- March of the Lich King
- Path of Arthas
- Festival of Legends
As new sets are added to the game, they will be added to the New Age pool, which might be brought back from time to time. For these Beta seasons, there will also be a special rules variant to the New Age format: no neutrals allowed. That will let you re-experience the New Age, but through new eyes! When we bring New Age back in the future, it might come back with the same rules variant, a different one, or no rules variant at all.

Comments
I have been begging for years for a mode like this and am beyond happy they finally introduced it! Now I need to start begging for my "Dragon Age Mode" (Core, BRM, DoD, GA, Onyxia's Lair) for the ultimate Dragon meta! 🐲🐲🐲
Who knows! This might be a future Twist rule set.
With this range of sets and no neutrals allowed, Pure Paladin might be very dominant, as it was already good several times in the respective metas and other classes will not have an upside to playing no neutral cards.
Maybe Thief Rogue also gets a boost from not discovering neutral cards, but I don't expect that to be nearly as significant as the Pure Paladin advantages.
This looks so exciting for people who have kept all their wild cards. Unfortunately me and many people dust wild cards as they rotate in order to keep up with standard and have most of the cards. Buying decks with gold is great value but I wonder if they will offer dust refunds for sets that rotate out of twist. Because if they don't then this format will have very little attraction to newer players as your cards will get useless for unknown amount of time.
And for the love of God I hope they make all classic cards refundable since 95% of those will become useless. I spent about 30k dust just to craft classic cards as I thought that format will be evergreen and keep on growing.
Cannot wait for my full set full dust refund
Major info, especially for those complaining about card aquisition: We will be able to buy pre-built decks with money or Gold (including golden versions).

That should go a long way towards the accessability of this mode, given the prices aren't too steep.
Personally, I'm mostly looking forward to the "changing rules" part. There's room for some Tavern Brawl crazyness here and I'm all in for it!
Have they announced the prices of those decks?
Its still a big ask to pay for something that may not even last more than 2 months before rotation happened. But we dont have the details yet, so for now Im just concerned.
Previous Battle-ready decks they offered cost like 20$. So it's probably going to be something around 1.5k-2k gold if they stick to the price.
Nope, no info yet as far as I know. It will be really interesting to see how this plays out imo, because I'd expect those decks to be at least somewhat competitive which ususally comes with a certain dust cost. So maybe this is an opportunity to get dust / cards for a better gold ratio than from packs, no matter if you actually want to play Twist.
I'm extremely excited for this mode, as someone with many wild cards but very little interest in Wild due to the insane power level. I think restricted card pools are really fun and interesting, and unlike what people here are saying I see no way this could be filled with bots like Classic since they would frequently be outdated and need new decks.
I just hope they keep the format cycling regularly, like every month or so, to keep things interesting. If the mode is too expensive they can just loan out more cards for free, like an extended core set just for Twist.
Brief comments on the new mode;
- Its basically a larger tavern brawl, which is useful to team5 for experimentation and to collect data. Perhaps if this was in before renathal was introduced, it might have allowed them to see the impact of what this card would have.
- Im not sure if this mode would be successful, because anyone interested in the old sets would probably just play wild, and lets be frank and say that this doesn't help new players, or casual players at all because most of them would simply not have the cards for it. The idea that players would start flooding blizz with money buying old packs is probably a non-starter, especially when an 8 year old expansion pack remains at the same price.
- The changing nature of this new mode makes crafting cards very unattractive. Imagine crafting a legendary, and then finding out its unusable a few weeks/months later. In other words, if Im railroaded into crafting something just to play this mode, I think I'll just not play it.
- It'll likely replicate classic. A briefly popular mode which at later stages gets filled with bots because no one's interested in playing it.
- The only positive thing about this mode is that sometimes, it might be easier to complete the standard achievements with this than using wild. For example, if youre missing Saxophone Soloist and dont want to craft em. Well, here's a mode that makes it easier to discover that card because most of the murlocs are not in it.
Not exactly since it doesn't introduce any weird gimmicks into gameplay. Just changes the cards that are available compared to Standard and Wild.
Doesn't introduce any weird gimmicks into gameplay yet. I won't be surprised if it happens, to spice things up.
Ok, but what will happen to classic achievements?
Good question, I hope they get replaced straight up which in my case I do not have to complete them once again, though I doubt I am that lucky.
Twist will get new achievements, they're working on keeping the Classic achievements available.

Thanks for the info, anchorm4n! I guess I have some more achievement hunting to do 😂
Took a while, but now we finally know what the "spell locked" part during phase 1 on the roadmap was.
I'm still very interested to know what the Wild part of phase 2 is going to be. I honestly thought they would announce something like this mode, but that it would be more like Wild but with some bans, etc, to try and make a more balanced "Wild" while letting actual Wild just be... wild!
