  • I didn't stay up until the last reveals yesterday so I woke up today and checked the automated discord channel for the new cards. Now that I've also checked other sources, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined because Owlonius' art doesn't really feature the goggly eyes.

  • Druid cards are fairly inbetween this time. Not obviously toxic, and yet sufficiently strong. We shall have to see whether they can actually survive in a meta without Nourish in it.

     

    Owlonius - Its a win con card but there's no more moonfire nor moonbeam. All you get is Sparkling Phial and Swipe, which technically is about 28 damage in total with +2 spell damage, which is achievable but you'd have to hold on to so many cards to make that happen. Im optimistic of the deck's chances, but obviously as with most druid decks we'd have to see it in practice to know if its viable.

    Sky Mother Aviana - A very strong card that can go either way. Grant you a few legendaries that can win you the game or a few duds that you'll never recover from. The thing about aviana is that you'll prob only play this in a value ramp deck, because this effectively thickens your deck so you get a bunch of cheap legendaries at the cost of making it more difficult to get to cards you actually put into your deck.

    Ensmallen - Ive no idea what exactly you'll do with this card. Seems to me that with Funnel Cake, Innervate, and Wind-Up Sapling, there's just so many ways to get more mana that this card really doesnt do much else other than extend a hypothetical advantage at a fairly expensive cost. Unlike Embiggen which clearly fits into midrange decks, what exactly is it that you'll want to do with this? Fact that it doesnt discount stuff in hand means even as a build around in a combo deck there's still the odd chance of this card turning into a brick.

    Jade Display - Nice throwback. Completely rubbish though. Cant help but feel team5 purposefully made this a deathrattle just so the deck not only becomes clunky but completely unreliable as a build around.

    Magical Dollhouse - Its funny because outside of lethal potential, what indeed is the druid cards that do well with spell damage? You'd want to keep Swipe because its your win con, and yet its practically the only thing that actually does stuff on board with spell damage. It'll see play for sure, assuming spell damage druid can be a thing, but Im struggling to see how druid uses up all 3 durability this card has.

    • Ensmallen - Most Miniaturize cards care more about a Battlecry or aura effect than Attack, so a deck built around that might work out.

      Sky Mother Aviana - You don't play her until after you've got a lot of card draw in your hand.

      Jade Display - Not meant to be a build-around, but like Aviana and Ensmallen, it is good in a draw-heavy archetype.

      Cards like Chia Drake and Bottomless Toy Chest enable this archetype.

      As for Magical Dollhouse, you don't need damage spells to take advantage of Spell Damage, so there will be plenty of opportunities to use all three charges.

  • I feel like Spell Damage should be renamed at this point. Lots of interactions with non-damaging spells lately. Maybe "Spell Bonus"?

    • I'd be okay with "Spell Bonus", but they'll never do that. Either way, maybe they've finally realized that Spell Damage needs more uses to encourage people to go beyond the two main situations (finishers, clears like Unleash Fel); there was little reason before to weave it into earlier turns.

  • Sky Mother Aviana might as well be a 9-Mana card that says "Shuffle 10 random Legendary minions into your deck. They cost 0 but have -1 Attack." Except the real version is better than that, because you can prime the pump before playing your Ensmallen. I don't know if this will be strong - randomness is randomness - but boy is it stupid.

    Edit: The Spell Damage Druid package is interesting; I'm sure some will find a way to abuse it, but it's more akin to the Spell Damage on the recent Arcane Hunter cards rather than just a combo finisher play.

  • I feel like Ensmallen should maybe have a "but not less than 1" for both effects: the Attack can't fall below 1, but neither can the Cost. The latter in particular - the potential for 0-Cost cards is something not to be trifled with, especially in this day and age.

      I mean, if that deck and card would be busted after they saw it on act , they will nerf it into how you call, at least it smells like that.

  • I'm pretty sure this is the very first time a card reveal has occurred on February 29th.

      That makes sense, considering how they've moved up the release schedule. First expansions of the year used to always come out in early April, so card reveals probably never started until March.

  • Did anyone else throw up a little after reading Jade Display? If this is the only way to make them, it might not be too bad, but if you can generate them with other spells or minions ...

    • Absolutely. I hope there will be no support in mini-set for that abomination.

      But guess what...

  • I do like the idea of Ensmallen, having mana cheating with a downside. Definitely seems fair, hoping this sentiment is carried with more cards in the future.

    Specially for this card, it won't really matter for combo centric decks (especially OTK combos) but the downside helps balance the card out so it's not an auto-include in every Druid archetype for the next 2 years

    Also a brilliant callback to Embiggen
