How to get deck discussion
Submitted 5 years, 4 months ago by

I've created 6 decks here since joining the site, and as far as I can tell, not one of them has been viewed even once. I'm not saying my decks are so amazing that everyone should be upvoting and commenting on them, but I was hoping for at least a little feedback, suggestions, etc. How do you get your decks into the spotlight?
Also, there are achievements related to this, and I love me some achievements.

You should invest more effort into deck guides. When ppl see you made an effort, they usually appreciate it. Anyone can put 30 cards together, there are many decks like that, so it is no surprise that you werent lucky with landing a discussion about it in yours. Make your deck stand out. Deck-building is hard. Maybe give some thought to your deck names as well.

most people put a deck in their signature, you could also start a thread advertising your deck. other than that you just have to hope to get noticed.

Deck guide and start a thread asking people for input. I think deck guide is the biggest part. It's hard to do if you're like me and have very little time in your life to put into creating a guide.
Threads are great to get a discussion going about a specific archetype that needs refinement. Many people will be glad to give their input and share what has been working for them. Might not get you views and upvotes, but it could help you refine your deck, so you can make a solid guide.
I'm probably not the best person to take advise from on this. My decks get no views or upvotes either.
Provide winrates, and high ranks, basically create meta-breakers or meta-breaker variants of existing decks, and prove it with deck trackers.
Alternatively, if your deck is not super strong, but at least viable, you can still "decorate" it with an interesting theme (based on the cards themselves), to be included in the deck title, and to be detailed in the deck description. it becomes more alluring.
You can even come up with a deck concept, say you want to build a Highlander deck with Zephrys the Great, and then try to complete it with cards fitting a theme (this is what I did with the deck in my current signature). Or even just start from a theme, and make a meme deck. As long as the theme is solid or entertaining, the deck will be noticed.
Ofc it's better if the deck itself is also viable.
Add the link to your signature, be an active forum member, and eventually someone will notice them, and maybe upvote.
You basically have to build a narrative around your deck. The more meme your deck is, the stronger the deck narrative must be, in order to be noticed. If you have both deck strength, and deck narrative, the likes are bound to skyrocket.
PS: always give your own upvote to your decks. From 0 to 1. It means more chances to get noticed. Once you reach 2 or 3, you have fair chances to be highlighted by the website.
Put "100% winrate LEGEND" in the title.
Don't you mean Rank 1 Legend? ;)
And find some random photo of rank 1 legend off the internet and post it to the guide. Because you know, pics or it didn't happen. ;)
Put as much effort as you can into deck guides. It won't always work, but it does make people a lot more likely to upvote your stuff.
Gosh dang it, cards bad.
Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I was working on the assumption that no one one was even clicking my decks, but several of you are suggesting that people look at them, then leave because I've provided very little content. Makes sense. I also didn't realize I could upvote my own decks (thanks RavenSunHS). I'm not too concerned with the votes (except for the site achievement) but mostly want to engage in discussion. I'll keep all that in mind next time I post a deck. And of course, I'll say it's 100% winrate Rank 1 Legend!

Follow up question: how do decks get chosen for the "Hot Decks" list on the main page? I just clicked through the 5 standard decks posted there, and they all have minimal guides and only a few votes each. Personally, I've viewed and commented on a bunch of other people's decks, and that's generally the place I look first.

I am not really knowledgeable with the whole upvote system, but I think that if your deck has 2/3+ upvotes and it's relatively new, it will appear on the home page.
Homepage determines decks based on an algorithm I don't plan to make fully public. Good, fresh content gets noticed though by the site =)
Also, I encourage you to post deck guides in the relevant class forum and start an actual discussion around it. Its another great way to get some eyes on it!

Putting it in your signature seems like a good idea. I saw someone put it in there, so I put mine in as well. I actually created a thread too, and wrote a short description of the deck, and it gained quite a bit of attention. The community here is really nice, to say the least.

Thanks to whoever went and upvoted all my decks! Surely not a coincidence that this just happened after I opened this thread.

Clicking around, I just figured out how to link actual cards in the deck guide. Can someone explain how to edit the text? For example, suppose I just want to say Raza for brevity, but still have it link to Raza the Chained when you mouse over it.

Chimera gave me very interesting tips on how to use custom tooltips.
While there are a lot of things you can do as a user to promote your decks, this is one area where I feel the site itself could be improved a great deal: at the moment the forums feel a bit isolated from other sections of the site like news and decks/guides, where discussion might occur as well. It seems to me that having a new deck or news item post as a forum thread would direct more traffic towards them and encourage more discussion/interaction from people who might not otherwise see that content.
You are right about that. And better tools for this are planned, but we have to prioritize where to assign dev time, so a lot of things that we need/want have to wait their turn. But we will get there eventually, just you wait! ;-)

It probably has to do with being new and having many upvotes and comments; so if you get votes when your deck is already old it's probably harder to be featured as when you just published your deck.
The pleasure is mine.
My last standard decks: nothing special right now.
About sharing your decks in your signature, we implemented a cool new feature for displaying decks on the site, read here!
It can look like this:

I checked out this guide, and I still can't understand how to do it. I'm not too savvy when it comes to code. Is there another way to explain it?
"Be excellent to each other." -Bill and Ted
When you copy bbcode of a deck (there is a button for it on a deck's page), this is what you get . And if you input it in a text editor, when you publish your post, this is how it looks like:
Now, if you change the bbcode's text to , this is how the deck displays now:
You can fit two of these in your signature at once.

Sorry, I didn't specify. I was looking for how to tag a card but to have the text be different from the card's actual name. For example, referring to Raza the Chained as simply Raza, but have it link to the appropriate card page.
"Be excellent to each other." -Bill and Ted
Also, I just followed your simple explanation for adding the deck to my signature. Thanks for that!
"Be excellent to each other." -Bill and Ted
Add attribute "text" to the bbcode, so instead of [Hearthstone Card (you write [Hearthstone Card (. (minus the empty spaces, but it wont show without them as a regular text)
Have you tho?:) Looks like the regular bbcode, not the fancy kind :) But if you like the regular one better, thats ok.
