Blizzard has posted a list of frequently asked questions for the update hitting next week titled "Rise of the Mechs". The update brings 18 card buffs to the game, a new mechanical card SN1P-SN4P, and a nerf to Reckless Experimenter.
- Card buffs are not eligible for dust refunds.
- The token from Extra Arms, [Hearthstone Card (More Arms) Not Found], will also cost 2 mana.
- They like the idea of buffing sets. No solid commitments yet on other buffs.
- Warrior has no nerfs because Blizzard would like to see how the meta shifts naturally.
- Card buffs were selected based on how fun or interesting the cards would be.
Quote From Dylan Bates Hey, everyone!
Since we announced the Rise of the Mech update (and all of the card buffs coming along with it) we’ve seen several questions repeatedly pop up in community discussions. We’ve gathered some answers from the Hearthstone development team here to hopefully clear up some confusion and provide more clarity on the execution and philosophy behind these changes.
- Will there be dust refunds for buffed cards?
- Philosophically, cards that we feel we’ve improved won’t be eligible for refunds.
- Is Extra Arms cost reduced for the additional copy as well?
- More Arms will also cost 2 mana.
- Will any other sets be buffed in the future?
- We will be watching closely how this round of buffs goes. We like the idea of doing this kind of thing in the future, but can’t commit to anything solid quite yet.
- It currently feels like most if not all Rogue decks are built around Preparation due to how Rogue spells have synergy with it. What was the thought process behind not nerfing Prep earlier? Doing so now feels like Rogue is effectively gutted.
- Prep fits exactly what we think the Rogue kit should be about, just at a power level that makes it feel like it should be included in all possible Rogue archetypes. It’s one of the cards we find ourselves designing around the most because it makes it difficult to make reasonably powerful Rogue spells in the circumstance where they aren’t being used with Prep.
- When we have a change in mind to a Basic or Classic card we would rather make that change at a time a whole new suite of cards are coming into the game or when the class we’re changing can withstand a power level decrease and still have powerful archetypes.
- Why no Warrior nerfs?
- Warrior has enough matchups with classes like Hunter and Mage that we thought would allow the meta to shift on its own if something like Control Warrior became the new most popular archetype. Of course, we will monitor player perception and data on a daily basis and will continue to evaluate if any more changes become necessary.
- How did you select the cards from each class to be buffed?
- We chose cards based on how fun or interesting we feel they are to play in relation to how much they are currently being utilized. In this case, the cards that were selected are part of the Rise of the Mechs event, which is specific to The Boomsday Project set. There were many cards that were played less than the cards we chose, but these are the ones that we believed led to the most fun experiences without making decks that are already very powerful even better.
- How long have you been thinking about / working on these buffs?
- We’ve been thinking about them for a while! Generally, the goal with past events and this event are the same. We want to try different ways to make the game feel fresh beyond the first month or two of a new expansion release. Buffing cards is one way to do that. Feedback has been very positive so far so we’re looking forward to seeing how the changes shake out when the patch is live.

Love the buffs! Imagine Millhouse Manastorm become a 6/6 😍
Buffs are definitely a good way to try to shake things up. Some cards were dead in the water upon printing and not a bad idea to try to resurrect through buffs. So many cards to pick from but so many are just garbage. Buff em up and you open up the potential of new decks and ways to create new win conditions.
I actually use both of the shaman cards a lot anyway, so the fact they're getting a wee buff is glorious news. Going to be working on a new Token Shaman this weekend for some Storm Bringer fun (seriously though, there's definitely something there with a murloc/mech hybrid magic carpet list, running both 1 copy of blood lust and the storm bringer... maybe electra for double soul of murlocs or blood lust or something as well)
In general, the whole "buff" idea I think is great, and it's just an added bonus that I actively use some of the cards in my current deck building.
Really looking forward to this update. I just hope it will allow some less playable archetypes to be a little closer to that 50% + frontier. Also, if they are going to continue the trend of doing really good things for the game and the players (it has been a few months of only that! ) they won't give warrior any new value generating / removal cards in August and just introduce a little different way to use bombs or other stuff.
I'm rather surprised that Blizzard have chosen not to consider nerfs for Warrior right now, considering how oppressive and pervasive it is currently.
Cards like [Hearthstone Card (Omega Devestator) Not Found] and Dyn-o-matic in particular are desperately in need of a re-balance as they are dominant right now.
It's also surprising that they consider Mage to be a good matchup against Control Warrior - with Shield Slams and the previously aforemention devestators, the Book Mage deck (probably the most common currently) gets roasted. At least, that's what I've experienced personally when I see a Mage come up against my Warrior deck. Giants are easily dealt with by this class. So much removal!
As far as Cyclone Mage goes, well let's be fair - that deck's kind of a joke meme deck and I don't think it has much to offer in the way of threat to Warrior Control decks right now. Lol!
Guys, how do you feel about blizzard bringing old characters(hs original) in future expansions, like characters that they had great succes with from the gadgetzan expansion.
I really don't understand why people are asking for dust refunds after they're given awesome cards.
I could understand asking for a craft discount, if you recently dusted these cards. But probably they didn't store this bit of information.
They store all the information about your account. Be sure about it.
I already play The Stormbringer in my murloc shaman build. 1 turn sooner is appreciated, and am I the only one who really loves the Art of Sn1p/ Sn4p?
Still not a single word on Barnes or big priest...
Oh well, it was too good to be true anyway.
I was wondering about the extra arms too.
Honestly i am fine without a dust refund. To be honest how many people dusted these cards because they thought they were trash? lol
ps: Really dig the new site its less bloated on ads vs the other site but i blame curse for that.
In principal I like the buffs, but it is an incredible feel bad to dust a crap legendary and then later on it gets buffed. They really have to be carful about buffing legendaries to avoid this. Other rarities are just upside, I feel like.
go mech go
I also agree buffed cards should be DE-ed for full dust value...
Can’t wait for the golden crab
Can't wait to start posting on here now. Anyway I hope they do this more, so many classic and basic cards need some love. Even the sets from last year
Damn so many people were asking about dust refunds...
I liked how Zalae said, that because all others cards became relatively worse we should get refund for those. LUL
Come on people, you can be that greedy!
That seems very limiting. "Dun't buff legendaries because people disenchant them". Just announce them like a week or two prior and that should be good enough. Or let people who disenchanted them during last month or two to craft them for 400 dust
The nerve of some people
These are the same people that call Blizzard greedy after not nerfing more expensive cards btw.
