[WILD] What about Val'anyr?

Val'anyr Card Image.

Do you think it is worth to craft it?

Mainly for Wild Even Paladin (as a sort of anti-meta deck, trying to mimic the role of Even Warlock and/or Even Shaman in some way), but not exclusively that.

Ebon Dragonsmith is also a card btw. It generates a neat (1) mana discount between itself and the weapon.

It's a fun card for sure. I've used it in Even Paladin quite a bit. It works wonders with cards like Echoing Ooze or Charge/Rush minions in general. Althought I think Even Paladin will be quite crap after the changes to Crystology. Which will most likely result in the cutting of the Echoing Ooze package.

So all in all you're most likely better of using a Silver Sword instead of Val'anyr sadly.

I own this card, and I can say that it's a fun one. You only need a meta not full of silence tech to enjoy it. You can play it in most slow paladin deck (secret, even, OTK, control, healadin, quest), basically everything except aggro and odd.

However, we must say that nowaday the paladin's deck that are high tier are.... aggro and odd. So, the choice is up to you, if you want or not spend dust on a card that is fun but isn't much represented.

PS: I don't like Ebon Dragonsmith. As Val'anyr is a one of a kind and paladin doesn't have weapon tutors, you should play it in a deck that doesn't need that hammer to win. So, a card that synergize only with Val'anyr isn't that strong IMHO, it will end being a dead card most of the times.

What list are you running? The one that used to be standard with a few upgrades?

I recently played against someone running mech even paladin. Seemed quite interesting with some decent high-roll potential.

This is the mould I am working on (with a second Truesilver Champion instead of Val'anyr).

It's still a theorycraft tho. Playing it at rank5 floor, so I'm not even sure I'm testing it properly.

I'd go with an even slower list tbh, but I'm afraid the Combo decks + Big Priest lurking in the meta would make it unplayable.

I loved playing with it in Standard.  I've not been able to use it much in Wild though.  I used to run it with Saronite Chain Gang, Echoing Ooze, and Doppelgangster.  But I wouldn't center the deck around it since all it takes is a well timed Silence and your deck would be ruined.  Immortal Prelatecan still rock this card though, but if you're wanting to really utilize it, put it into a Hand Buff Paladin style build. That way you're not a one trick pony.

Actually, it's just a lategame trick for me. I'm trying to build it as a Tempo deck, with Val'anyr as its ultimate Value generator for whenever the game stretches for too long, but not as its average wincondition.

Going full-blown handbuff would make the deck too slow and vulnerable.

More then this, if you make a handbuff deck, you want to play better hand buff then Val'anyr: either aoe buff or something less expensive at least. As RavenSun said, this weapon is a value generator more then a build around card.

I haven't seen this card in play since the nerf to equality. That nerf hit even pally hard, as well as any control decks. I guess its still playable in handbuff deck, but the nerf to saronite chain gang makes doppleganster the only card that has great synergy with this one. so... seems like blizzard really hates this card :p

Val'anyr has it's proper place and use. Remember, one silence or hard stop on the minion it buffs and it goes away.

Rummaging Kobold can be a life saver if you do encounter a list that runs silence or hard stops, however.

Did you read the part where he said it's mainly for even paladin?

Even dragon paladin? Sounds like a thing I would try if I had more than 10% of all cards

If that's the case then I'd ditch the Ebon Dragonsmith - there are probably higher tempo plays you can make on T4.

There are a few silences/transform effects floating around in Wild (evenlock, shaman, mage, priest(sorta)) so Val'anyr may not consistently generate value.

It's definitely worth testing though. If you are on EU let me know and you can test some builds (I've got the card).

It'd be hard for this card to ever become competitive because of how important transform effects are in wild.  Slow decks need them to survive a big priest highroll and fast decks use them to get through voidcallers and plague tokens.  Of course, if you're just trying to make it work the best it can for fun, you're free to try

If you don't like echoing ooze, you can try adding Umbra to duplicate the weapon and a few big deathrattles to go with her.  You can even turn it into an Undatakah deck

There are a couple of weak cards in your list.  The lance was never played when it was standard and makes no sense now when 2 attack doesn't line up well with the meta.  Hammer of wrath likewise is only found (rarely) in cycle heavy combo paladins.  Chillblade champions are okay when the weapon lands on it but very bad otherwise.  Combinations in wild need to be either at a game winning power level or consist of cards that are still decent stand alone.  I haven't tried 2 pyros and 1 activator myself, but it looks wonky.  Spellbreakers don't appear to have good targets in wild if you're not running an aggro deck(?) I can only think of an early vargoth or frothing berserker as targets.  As a slower value deck, voidcallers aren't such a big deal

The general rule of thumb is that if it wasn't played when it was standard, you really, really don't want it in wild unless it gained an insane synergy with the bigger pool.  Piloted shredder was played in almost every deck but now literally nowhere.  That's how far the power level has gone up.  Ask yourself if each of your cards are better than piloted shredder

Ebon Dragonsmith is a pretty big trap IMO.  Even when I tested it in weapon heavy standard decks it eventually gets cut for being too weak.  4 mana 3/4 is terrible.  A 3/4 is worth about 3 mana in arena, but in constructed (especially wild), even a 3 mana 3/4 needs serious effects or synergies to be playable.  I'd say dragonsmith's body is worth about 2.5 mana, making the effect cost 1.5 mana.  Paying 1.5 mana to save 2 mana on a later turn is an extremely mediocre investment, and this is assuming you always have a weapon in hand for it to hit

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Indeed the Ebonsmith is not worth it, mainly because when I need a weapon, I can't afford the Combo. If the Ebonsmith was tuned as a (2)-cost minion maybe...

I wish I could try Umbra, but I do not have her either.

I made a few tweaks, oriented on reacting early against Aggro/Token more than anything, and slowly overcome them (similarly to how Even Shaman works). I have found the Argent Lance fairly good at that. At least against Aggro Druid.

This is the current iteration of the thing, with Silver Sword instead of Val'anyr (until I decide if I actually want to craft the hammer).
