If you've been like us and have been wondering what the rarity spread is in the upcoming Ashes of Outland expansion, wonder no more!
- The Demon Hunter cards take the place of some Neutrals.
- Demon Hunters see 3 extra commons and 2 extra rares over the other classes in Ashes of Outland.
- Nothing else has changed with the rarity distribution.
- We remain at a total of 135 cards in the set.
We've put together a chart to better showcase how the rarities are distributed.
Set | Basic | Common | Rare | Epic | Legendary |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Basic Demon Hunter | 10 | ||||
Demon Hunter Initiate | 8 | 6 | 4 | 2 | |
Ashes of Outland Demon Hunter | 6 | 5 | 2 | 2 | |
Ashes of Outland Other Classes | 3 | 3 | 2 | 2 | |
Ashes of Outland Neutral | 19 | 3 | 3 | 5 |
Quote From Chadd Nervig The addition of Demon Hunter cards comes in place of Neutral cards. However, more than that, it also affects the Rarity distribution within Neutral. We wanted to keep the overall Dust value of the set close to the same as previous sets; we're not at all trying to make the game more expensive (quite the opposite, see duplicate protection, free decks, etc.).
Here's the actual breakdown of rarities in each set.
Demon Hunter Basic: 10B
Demon Hunter Initiate: 8C + 6R + 4E + 2L
Demon Hunter Ashes: 6C + 5R + 2E + 2L
Other Classes Ashes: 3C + 3R + 2E + 2L
Neutral Ashes: 19C + 3R + 3E + 5L

More Epics than Legendaries feels really off to me, I'm curious what the distribution will be after this year.
I can see that the amount of common cards is higher than usual. While it's good to have many common cards, since the rarity protection will affect them, the backside usually comes when dusting it. The average amount of dust will be smaller now.
Not having an impact, but still smaller.
There are more commons to collect in this set, but that doesn't mean there are more commons in PACKS. The per-pack dust average will remain unchanged.
That's not what I mean. The impact from dusting when rotation happens will be smaller, because most of it were commons.
I'm a fan of the changes, and reducing the number of epics and commons means less chances for trash cards that have no purpose being crafted or opened from packs is cool too. Even if Blizzard still makes trash epics, it could mean less epics required for certain decks.
But all that aside, can we talk about how sick the Maiev art is on the cover of this thread?
and that art is now a card art
look how wonderful she is !
There's too many useless neutrals anyway. Takes more than a second to recall the card's name at times.
More legendaries mean a more expensive game. Buuut, the rarity drop protection was so good that I don't really care that much about this.
At the end of the day, while it's clear Demon Hunter has stolen most of its cards from the Neutral pool - which is cool, as most neutral cards are just pack filler either way - one thing actually changed:
There are now MORE LEGENDARIES each set. It's apparent that Demon Hunter hasn't taken away any legendary spot from the neutral pool, so... Oof for that.
It appears however that the set has actually lost epic slots - previously, the total epics for a set was 27, in this expansion, the number is decreased to 23 - which hilariously enough means it will be faster for big spenders to earn the full epic collection of a set, thus making the epic duplicate protection they just introduced less relevant, but only for big spenders
Have to disagree here. Less epics means you dont get useless cards like Blowtorch Saboteur as part of your epic collection. If anything its actually better for FTP since they have a better chance at quality epics not bs ones.
Also, simply by getting rid of the possibility of frankly ridiculous 4 copies of bs epics like Chromatic Egg or Ramming Speed, that's a massive boost for that minute little pouch of mine called wallet.
I don't remember the exact count, but I think over the entire course of Un'Goro in standard I opened around 12 copies each of Shadow Visions and Charged Devilsaur and next to nothing else in the way of epics, so I greatly appreciate this change
<whisper>dapperdog remember mate I am trying to get Ramming Speed nerfed to get dust refund, I need you onside for this, please don't publically call it bs even though we both know it is. Cheers </whisper>
There, all patched up. We're on the same team, dont worry.
Not trying to make the game more expensive. I wish that were true. Every year the game has gotten more expensive.
"Every year the game has gotten more expensive."
Not true, and even less true when you look at the new policies this year. With duplicate protection across the board this year, which INCLUDES cards that you've dusted, the game is more affordable than ever.
Yes it is true hearthstone use be cheaper. There were years when it would be 2 expansions then adventures. Adventures only costed $20 while an expansion bundle cost $50. Now they have 3 expansions then an adventure that comes out a month later each costing money. In addition they have those mega bundles that cost $70. When hearthstone first came out and for about two years afterward the most you could spend if you bought every promotional items was around $180. Today if you bought every promotional items it would cost you $400+ a year. I'm glad this year they are trying harder to reduce the cost of play, but I can't help but be a bit sceptical, they are a business after all.
You don't HAVE to buy anything. Plenty of free-to-play people make Legend every season still. The pre-release bundles are FAR from essential to succeed or have fun with Hearthstone.
You think so? I've been feeling the opposite to be true with how much free stuff they've been giving out as of late.
The main reason it's gotten more expensive is that they release more cards per year: they went from expansions and adventures as separate seasons to every season an expansion and now an expansion plus adventure each season. While it costs more time/money per year to keep up, you do get more game in return.
The switch from one to two class legendaries per expansion is one change that does make things more expensive while not delivering a lot in terms of content. I mean, it's nice that there can be two archetypes per set supported by a legendary, but they could also support the second archetype without including a legendary for it.
On the plus side, they added more events where you can get free packs, have frequent sales (bundles) and the announced duplicate protection for all rarities is very welcome.
I mean, looking at what has been announced so far for the new year, things are already looking much more affordable. Yes, you can still spend as much money as you want, but being able to complete the common and rare sets of cards so easily now it adds so much to the affordability of the game.
