Cool buff to evolve shaman... Evolve Desert Hare into 3 Magtheridons...
What if you Hex, Polymorph or evolve one of the Wardens. Is this considered "dying"?
presumably not
What the holy shit??? This is OP AF
I feel like all Dormant minions need to have Rush inherent to them in order to be worth anything.
There is a card type in Shadowverse called amulets that works nearly like dormant, except you can interact with them using some spells and effects.
And let me tell you that amulets can be pretty devastating and definetly worth waiting a while for overstatted stuff, especially if it comes with some sort of effect like that dormant mage card.
That's certainly what Wizards of the Coast thought when they introduced the suspend mechanic into MTG. I've definitely thought the same thing as I've looked at these cards. Some have effects that will impact the board when they wake up, but not all, and it can feel pretty bad to spend your early turns doing nothing, or top decking a card that is effectively blank for two turns.
At this point, we have to just assume because these imprisoned cards are a big part of this expansion, they've taken extra care to test these cards to determine whether or not they're reasonably playable.
Wasn't Magtheridon purple (at least back in Warcraft 3 - I didn't play WoW Burning Crusade)?
At any rate, Magtheridon is probably not as good as he looks. Similar to The Darkness:
He's definitely cool enough and powerful enough that people will try to make him work, the flavor is 100% on point, and he'll awaken a lot more consistently than The Darkness, but I suspect we'll see a lot of people feeling pretty bummed when their mini-quest 4-drop is killed by a newly buffed Shadow Word: Death before he gets to do anything.
And also, there’s a risk (as with Darkness) that the opponent evades the condition and you’re stuck with a permanent dormant on your side of the board. I assume if they polymorph or return-to-hand a Warder, you won’t be able to satisfy the “all three Warders die” requirement, and Maggie stays locked up
That's gonna be one of the interesting questions here. The text just says "when they die," so if the check is something like "whenever one dies, see if your enemy controls any more," then single target polymorphing or bouncing won't do much. I would assume it works that way because if it doesn't, you get totally screwed.
"won't have an impact the turn he wakes up"
y'know, except wiping the board
Yes, you're right, I misspoke. What I meant is that the 12/12 body can't do anything on the turn it wakes up. Between the delay during which you're working to wake him up, and the lack of charge, your opponent will have a lot of time to find the removal they need to kill Magtheridon.
Also, the board wipe is symmetric, and killing your enemies minions is typically only going to happen when you spend mana on your turn (except maybe with Doomsayer), so it's not like you'll have a ton of mana to rebuild your board when he wakes up. At that point, you've put all your eggs in one very vulnerable basket.
Well, I don't really thinkk he was ever meant to work as a tempo play anyways. I see him more as a 2-card Lord Godfrey with a bigger body.
You want to combo it to instantly wipe a board and have something left to pressure your opponent. You're not exactly trying to rush this thing out on turn 4....at least that'S how I see it
Darkness II: The Re-Darkening
"Behold the power of a 4 mana 12/12".
*Enemy Shadowsteps ONE warder
Magtheridon has been defeated.
Oh, and Maiev Shadowsong can just straight up put old maggy here to sleep again and with the wardens already dead my bet's that Magtheridon will stay dormant until someone summons another three warders.
Interestingly, this can be used as a method to board clear. Very interesting indeed.
Maiev's effect specifically states "for 2 turns." So Maiev's effect applies a 2 turn Dormant state, not a Dormant state with special conditions (ie Warders)
Furthermore, when Magtheridon awakens from a Dormant applied by Maiev Shadowsong, he won't destroy all minions.
He's dormant by default. My guess is that after he wakes from the 2 turns he goes back to his default. Meaning if your opponent somehow plays the three warders and they get destroyed Magtheridon will wake from dormancy.
Its kinda hard to guess what happens if you put a default dormant minion to sleep again since there's no other card that can put a minion to dormancy before this.
Q: Can you use Maiev Shadowsong to retrigger a dormant minion's effect I wonder?
A: Yes.
Q: I wonder if the minion saves its buffs and gained effects after waking up from Maiev Shadowsong's battlecry. How does it work?
A: Yep, it awakens exactly as it was
This are questions answered by the developers. You can expect Magtheridon to return as a 12/12 or whatever its stats were before Maiev. The way his battlecry is worded sounds like he won't destroy the board when he awakens.
Doomsayer punished
So many lore characters with cool unique effects! I LOVE THIS SET ALREADY! lol
