We're also a private company, not a government, and are more than free to remove whatever content we don't want to see on our platform.

I don't want people to see something, think its okay, and then start acting like that. This is how HearthPwn became a toxic cesspool.

The power play on shutting comments down was done for two reasons:

    1. Long-term moderation was possibly going to be difficult.
    2. It shows people the severity of the issue and disappointment.

Now if we were always going to shut down comments on articles that generate a lot of discussion, it would be much less effective so it won't always happen, but for that case, I considered it worthy.

This isn't going to be a point by point rebuttal of what you wrote, but some things to consider in response to the points you raised assuming they're made in good faith.

I'm in my late 30s, and I'm blessed to be in a position where I hire people now and again. Assuming you do the necessary work to reach a large applicant pool you're going to have way more qualified people applying than positions open. Our culture has a weird obsession with meritocracy, finding the "best," as if such a thing is easily objective let alone real. Odds are several people would do an excellent job in a given position. Filtering out the unqualified is easy. It's deciding between the many deserving applicants that is difficult. And in that process I do think about gender balance and other demographic considerations because I'm in a public-facing department in a very large city. I would be a fool to build my team in a way that appeared to be exclusionary. And if I NEVER hired women or people of color because I was ALWAYS able to find a qualified white man (which I AM) that would clearly be bad, even as I'd very easily be able to hide behind the excuse that they were the "best" applicant for the job. What does best mean? It's undefined, but I'm appealing to the authority of process and meritocracy. But someone who ends up hiring only white men is exercising their judgment and discretion just as much as I am in my example.

All that said, worrying about finding the BEST is even more laughable in this specific context. How many people crap all over Kripp every time he's invited to a constructed event because he's been a Battlegrounds exclusive player for over a year now? I love Kripp and I've been one of those people!  @lunaloveee8 and @AvellineHS are extremely good players that have viewership and metrics equal or greater to others invited. But beyond that, this isn't the GM circuit, it's an event specifically designed to promote the game to the broader HS community. This IS a casual game with millions of women players. There are dozens of qualified women to play alongside the men. They have been utter fools to not be inviting more women players and content creators to these kinds of casual events from the very beginning. I can't believe it took community outrage for them to do the right thing.

So I reject the entire framing of "positive discrimination" which are the same tired arguments that have been used against affirmative action for 80 years and probably longer. If you have personal anxiety around whether or not YOU, an individual, will lose out on opportunities because of affirmative action, please know that there is already a line of equally or more qualified people -  that look just like you - that you may also lose out on opportunities to. Life is hard, society isn't fair, but how we treat other people, including how we think about them, is key. "Everything worthwhile is done with other people."

    Dear Sir

Please consider refraining from making further posts regarding this article.  Though absolutely entitled to hold any and all views you wish, I fear you'll end up getting the quite valuable and well thought out discussion that's mostly taking place* shut down.

I am not site staff but I think that would be a shame because sensible and appropriate discourse actually can change views for the better and explore these issues positively without causing toxicity.

    Many thanks.

this post is just unbelievable. An absolute weirdo confidently waltzing in to say he hates minorities, justifying it by creating imagined situations in his head to get mad at and topping it off by voicing his intentions to troll a popular streamer.

Like how little introspection do you need to have to read that mess you posted and not wonder if maybe you dont have the right read on this scenario

I too have concerns regarding positive discrimination in that it by definition seems unable to avoid being unfair to one or more groups.

I'd rather we focus on trying to avoid the need to even consider it by ensuring everyone is treated fairly ideally based on merit and suitability.  Make things a level fair playing ground for all and no need to artificially interfere to try to correct unfair bias towards/against groups of people.  In truth I have no idea how unfair it is or isn't at the moment - there are people better placed to judge than I.

That said, given this is a promotional event then it seems a nice thing to do for the 2 streamers to give up their spots so long as they were under no pressure to do so.  Points to them.

If this was a competitive event that would be different - the best play the best and I would be adverse to calls to interfere without a compelling and valid cause.

Completely want to underscore this. Regis has been saying this for a couple years now - that he'd like to see others get a chance to be in the spotlight because of the success he's enjoyed and is enjoying.

    Agreed (as usual).

In particular I've been pleasantly surprised regarding Luna and how supportive the general consensus has been towards her.  When I saw this article go up and the nature of it I was bracing myself for negative comments aimed at her but so far have been proud of the OOC community response with few exceptions.

What a load of rubbish. xD
Let's have a look at your arguments, shall we...
    Quote From Nefiret

However, the so-called "positive discrimination" can be dangerous and can work against what we were trying to achieve.

Yes, positive discrimination can have unintended side effects that work against the goals "we" are trying to achieve. But clearly, if you read the Tweets by Jia above, they have an intended goal and a measurable effect so we can gauge whether the positive discrimination works or not. If you even read the comments by Slysssa and others, Hearthstone and many other gaming communities could currently be considered discriminatory against women. Described above is also, that the people who are currently speaking out have been dealing with this issue for years, hoping that over time the issue would resolve. It did not. Therefore it follows that action has to be taken changing the current view members of the community are holding to change the community as a whole to be more inclusive. Which in turn, as RegisKilbin stated will build up the entire game and community. What's your argument against that? Some vague fears and consequences that you left purposefully ambigous.
    Quote From Nefiret

The fact that gender, race or sexual orientation is considered as a factor over the merits, effort and personal worth is a serious error in my opinion.

Why? Because there is nothing more sexist than choosing someone ONLY because of their gender, or there is nothing more racist than choosing someone ONLY because of their race. That’s discrimination, “positive”, but discrimination nonetheless.

I would agree. But if you read above, people like Avelline want to be respected for their skill, want to be invited for their skill. Not for being a woman. They clearly want to be respected for the players they are, the challenges they have overcome. Not merely for fitting into the current flavor of the day minority. If you've followed the discussion, then for invitationals there's always plenty of people that elligible to take part. So if you choose 8 men over others players, despite your player base encompassing plenty of talents from all races, genders or orientation, then you are engaging in discrimination against those players. That's what this is about.
As was pointed out by Jia, the individual treshhold at which you consider representation to be enough may vary. Clearly, you are of the opinion that this representational value should be Zero and it should be all skill. But if the community attributes female players less skill - based on no reason whatsoever - then judging based on skill becomes null and void. Representation matters all the more in that case to loosen these old and unwarranted beliefs that certain groups are just "better".
    Quote From Nefiret

We are all human beings, we must leave out trifles such as sex, race, sexual orientation and other personal characteristics that do not influence at all in, for example, a card game.

I would agree again. But this is not what happens, as you can clearly see when you read the testimonials above. So if you treat everyone as a human being, regardless of sex, race, sexual orientation or other personal characteristics then good for you! That is admirable and if everyone acted the same way you did, then we wouldn't have to discuss this matter at all. Fact of the matter is though, plenty of people don't think like that. They feel like they are the master race and should be the only ones who are entitled to playing or winning competitively. To an extent where they feel entitled to harass others about it. If you wanted to stop everyone from acting that way, how would YOU do it?  You wouldn't, would you? You think everything was fine as it was before, despite evidence to the contrary.
    Quote From Nefiret

I fully understand that Blizzard wants us to believe that this game is for women too, but make no mistake, the vast majority of content creators and professional players of this game are men.

It's a lovely tautological argument, isn't it? The game is intended for men, so let's make it more asinine to women, so less women play it, so we can make it more suitable for men. It's a vicious cicle. Yes, even today, more men than women play video games. Sure. But women WANT to play video games. So simply saying more men are playing than women, so we should not even give them a platform is stupid. Neither does it not hold any relevance to the community being toxic towards minorities in the game. More men play the game, so we are allowed to harrass women? Yeah, that's a great position to hold.
    Quote From Nefiret

I really wish it were something more egalitarian or there was some clear way to do so, seriously, but forcing women to participate just because they are women without meeting the popularity and merit requirements that have been demanded of the other male participants... it seems to me an outrage.

I could mistake these words for wisdom, were it not for the thinly veiled misoginy I read here. You're talking about "forcing women to participate", when clearly there are plenty of female players that would delight in taking part, be it to compete with the best or to develop their brand and income. So don't even try to come off as you're merely trying to protect those poor females that the evil corporation would force to partake in their events. Go shave that neckbeard right off.
Yes, in a perfect society, the rules as to how you are elligible to be invited to an event would be set in stone. You would have some cut-off values and everyone above gets in. But that's neither how the market nor the world works. There are always diverse interests and biases of individuals and corporations to deal with. Maybe Blizzard wants to expand in new markets and therefore will include more people from South America and Africa in order to generate interest and revenue in those continents. Could you fault them for that? Should you fault them if they think it's a good idea to have more females in tournaments because that's a market they can still expand in, while most of the males already play some kind of game and are therefore harder to expand in as a market?
Again, this has no relevance to the issue at hand. The community has toxic elements and biases against certain groups of players. How would you address this issue?
    Quote From Nefiret

I am convinced that there must be other ways to encourage and favor the participation of women and other minorities in public events of this caliber, but I honestly believe that "positive discrimination" is not the solution.

And I believe that you believe that. But you do not present any other options. Also here  you start to show your true colours. Either that or you're wording it clumsily. Because my reading of this is that you while you think they should somehow be included, you clearly seem to be of the opinion that they do not deserve the spots they currently hold. So clearly you do not think that women or minorities deserve the spots they get at all. None of the women ask for extra slots just to be included.
They precisely ask for what you pretend already happened before. To compete on even grounds. To be treated with decency and honor, their issues not neglected and brushed aside by an unrelenting community. To be heard as equal members of this community with their own views and needs that deserve being heard.
You can achieve this if you lead by example. You go and include them, even if it means a slight overrepresentation, just to spite and quiet those voices that so shamelessly cause toxic interactions. Just so you can show that you do not stand for this kind of behaviour.
    Quote From Nefiret

Imagine that for future editions it is required that half of the participants be men and the other half women, but that because men are a majority and are more specialized (which is a fact) they far exceed women and leave them in a bad place... is that positive? What should be done? Maybe rig the game so that women can have more opportunities than men and thus win more and balance the scale? I don’t think so.

Ah yes, the great finisher to drive the point ad absurdum. Make a ridiculous over the top statement, that will make drive your point home. Again your misoginy shines through. You do not think that any woman could be as good as a man. THerefore you assume that they would require some sort of assistance by the game devs or some tournament requirement to be able to compete on even grounds. And this despite you specifically stating above that we should "leave out trifles such as sex, race, sexual orientation and other personal characteristics".
So where does your fact that "men are more specialized" come from other than some imaginary bias that you yourself hold? Where do you get the audacity to tell women they cannot be as "specialized" as the men and claiming that even if they did, they could not reach the levels of men and would need some kind of assistance? I can tell you: Ignorance, bias, prejudice. You might feel like you are inclusive, but people like yourself are exactly why the problem is so pervasive. You feel like you're fair and equal. You're not. You are giving power to the status quo, regardless of whether that is a good thing or not. You merely feeling that there is no problem or there is no good solution, does not equate that nothing should be done.  Your claims of positive discrimination are a slap in the face of people like Hafu, Pathra, Alliestrasza, Jia, Avelline and many others have earned their position in this community. Despite the amount of resistance they had to weather. Are you seriously claiming that they've been given anything more than what they deserve?
Let's look at it from another perspective. Let's assume we include two people from minorities in each event. And they always lose. They're the first to drop out at every single event. You've therefore watered down the competition slightly at the first level. Some toxic members then will take it for granted they are just worse and will claim supremacy over the minorities. That's your scenario of "positive discrimination can be dangerous" from above, isn't it?

Well to a member of the minority winning or losing doesn't matter. Representation matters. Having a role model to look up to, to aspire to matters. You will root for this person regardless of the chances of them winning. And that person will try all the harder to improve just to show they're worth their salt. These aspirations we should cherish as a community. We should encourage everyone to stand up and try their best. Respect them for trying. Respect them for partaking. Be willing to help them become better. And most importantly we as a community should stand up and say no to those voices in our community that actively hamper these efforts.

The best will persist in the grand scheme of things. Noone is suggesting to just give the Grandmaster title to just anyone of the right minority. All they're asking is more representation to level the playing field. So they can focus on playing the game rather than having to worry about getting assaulted, sexualized and ridiculed everywhere they go. And if you cannot get behind that cause, then clearly, you are part of the problem.

This just reinforces the idea that women are weak and fragile and incapable of doing anything by themselves. I fail to understand how artificial representation made for political reasons will change anyone's mind. If you want to be respected you need to change yourself first and foremost. Don't cry and whine, don't ask to change the entire world, so it would be more comfortable for you. This is not what a mature and capable person does.

This is just pathetic. Worthless virtue signaling.

I get where you are coming from but I think it's less about putting a "weak and fragile" gender into the spotlight. It's about putting an equal into the spotlight who has never had or had less time under it because of their gender.

This is HS - a digital game. It's not physical in the typical sense. Nobody is suggesting putting women into the NFL just because...or combining the ATP and WTA tennis tours together just because....or allowing co-ed track and field events just because. In a physically demanding sport, gender does matter. I follow tennis which is why I mentioned the ATP and WTA. Have you seen what kind of serve the men have on tour and how the women respond to it when they are on the receiving end? Many times, they are lucky to get a racquet on the ball. This is fact - search YT. In HS, if there were no camera, no mic, and all you had to go by were a player's moves....you couldnt tell the difference between a male vs a female of equal skill.

Also, I believe the lack of women all these years is due to the HS Community Manager and this uprising is years in the making.

I dont care if you wear a skirt, come from the Himalayas, missing 2 legs and an arm. If you can play and are entertaining, I want to see you.

JUst for your information, Freedom of Speech just protects your legal right to say whatever you want and not be persecuted for it.

If you state your opinions on a private platfor such as this the owners get to decide whether or not they want you doing it. Your freedom of speech is in no way being infringed. They just get to set the terms and conditions.

A second card. This has been a very slow comp as I probably should've seen coming. How about we blow something up?!

Jinx is a character that's all about explosives and blowing stuff up. She is the "loose cannon". This card is based off or her LoR design which wants you to dump your hand out as quickly as possible and her token card, Super Mega Death Rocket! which is primarily about face damage.

I could also make it an AoE card so it's a little bit more interesting than just being super-Aggro. And truth be told, I feel like this might be too weak.

EDIT: Off of feedback, I did decide to add a cantrip. I did feel it was on the weak side, and this does similarly fit her LoR card.

    Feedback

    Linkblade91
I talked about it on Discord already, and I think it's good.

    NerdyMcNerd
This reaction is extremely faithful to Viktor's LoR design and the effect can certainly be quite good. My only concern is that I'm not sure gaining a random keyword really translates to good gameplay as much as it does to LoR, but that's not that big of a deal so I think you're good.

    Anchorm4n

For someone who hasn't played LoR, you've translated the champs into gameplay quite well! Your first version of Jarvan IV is a decent card, but it feels a bit too similar to just a Divine Shield/Rush card and there's also an empty line in the textbox.

Ashe has a good effect, but right now she has a chance to Freeze the minion she's currently attacking. If you can find a way to change that, then I think what you've got is pretty good!

Your second version of Jarvan IV is a good representation of the Level Up mechanic in LoR, although "Primes" are a distinctly Ashes of Outlands thing so I think I would change the name of the token. I can't help but also feel that the Prime might be a bit weak specifically compared to Deathwing, Mad Aspect.

I do quite like your Battlegrounds version of Jarvan, but I'm not sure how I feel about Battlegrounds and Constructed cards being in the same space given that they have very different design protocols.

Remember, this is an invitational. The people in it didn’t win their place through pure skill. Blizzard chose them as part of a strategy to grow and guide the community.  Those choices have unconsciously favored white men for years, and the cumulative effect is that people like Regis make a successful career while equally deserving women have not. The best way to address this is to make a point of giving women the chances that they previously missed.

Honestly, I think a lot of this inequality is due to their Community Manager and I fault him for this. This mini-explosion has been years in the making if you ask me.

The more I see transgenders, gays, african americans, female activists and such occupy some place (especially it is annoying in entertainment, like movies, games, literature nominations and such) just because they are transgenders, gays, african americans, female activists, the more I hate them. I was a very neutral person to minorities before these things started to happen by force from these minorities. But now I hate them. Imagine reshooting Peter Pan and Alice in wonderland with african americans in main roles, English queen Ann Bolein as an african american. Reserving a place for african american in every movie, just because there must be a place for him (no matter what the actual plot is). Screw this shit!

Now I just want to go to grandmasters chat and tell Jia to go to kitchen after I've read her comments on the topic. Beforehand I was willing to write about her nice casting.

This was my initial reaction as well. But as Nevin mentioned a few comments above, the people participating in the innvitational aren't there by virtue of skill, they were hand-picked. If, for example, people in the grandmasters were replaced for the sake of being more "inclusive" then I would be upset because blizzard would be turning down qualified people in favor of less qualified just because of their gender/race.

Also note that Regis did give away his spot voluntarily. I don't know about Kripp though since they didn't have a quote from him in the article.
