Free players who have a full or nearly full collection of Classic can now enjoy a mode where they are at no disadvantage whatsoever, while still gaining Reward Track XP that can be spent on Standard cards if they choose.
The barrier to entry for Hearthstone is much lower, as new players no longer need to collect a Classic set on top of the latest expansions.
On the other hand, the game continues to be expensive for veteran players on an ongoing basis, as expansion packs are still just very expensive loot crates, and you have to open WAY too many of them to get the cards you want.
I can see why others might be excited by all of this, but as a veteran player with a full Classic collection and no desire to relive 2014, none of this will have any financial impact on me whatsoever.
The only real difference is the possible side effect of better game balance without the looming specter of evergreen cards wrecking the design space, but I'm not completely confident Team 5 will suddenly stop making terrible mistakes or leaving oppressive archetypes to rule the meta for far longer than they should.
i have about 30 unopened classic packs. I was "saving" them for the set revamp ... after this announcement doesn't make any sense to save them. Correct? ?
I really didn't expect an announcement this big before Blizzconline. Some thoughts:
- Classic Format: WoW Classic but for Hearthstone. I didn't know there was a demand for this. Sounds cool though.
- Baku & Genn returning to Witchwood: I don't play Wild at all, but I think that should've been done when Witchwood rotated out.
- 27 deck slots: Guess that's the easiest way to do it, but the deck selection UI was designed when there were nine classes. Now that there are ten, maybe that UI should be updated.
They can still make a Baku/Genn-level mistake - they'll just have to nerf them rather than rotating them early. It removes one very blunt instrument for addressing such an issue, but that doesn't mean things will be totally unfixable.
Since Classic packs are now for the Classic/Wild game modes only, any card that was in the game in 2014 will be obtainable from Classic packs. The Hall of Fame no longer exists.
I really like the core set. It being free means it's easier for new and returning players to get enough cards to build a decent deck. And the fact that it rotates means they don't need to nerf every good card to avoid it being in decks forever.
I don't think the Classic format will be interesting for long. I'll gladly use the additional deck slots for Standard and Wild though.
Miracle Rogue, Freeze Mage, Sunshine Hunter, Control Warrior, Reynad Zoo... And paladin being unplayable. Classic Hearthstone will be fun for awhile, but i don't think it has as much staying power as classic WoW. Still, all those announcements sound really good. And rotating core set means there should be a bit less power creep. If every year the card pool is completely different, then the fresh expansions don't need to necessarily be BETTER than old ones, they just need to complement this year's core set.
Rotating Core Set - Yes, excellent, saves cards from being nerfed just because one interaction is too strong for standard, it's a solid addition that adds even more excitement to the rotation.
Legacy - Not a lot to note here. Hall of fame is being dissolved, so they need to extra careful not to make another Baku/Genn mistake again. Other than that, fine.
Classic Mode - ....ok. I've not heard of a demand for this. Classic WoW did alright, and I guess there was some demand for it for them to consider it worth implementing. I've got zero interest myself, and I'm still disappointed they dismissed the idea of a rotation ladder, as the idea of a perpetually changing meta interests me a lot more than a permanently stagnant one.
9 Extra Deck Slots - Yes. All the yes. Although why they couldn't just make it so you choose a Hero, and have 9 slots for each Hero is beyond me. I guess those who only play 1 or 2 Heroes would complain if they did that though.
"All balance changes for these cards over the years will be reverted, but cosmetic changes will remain. For example: Felstalker will be Felstalker and will not revert to Succubus. Also, all Basic cards from the Hall of Fame will be Common rarity in the Classic format."

If I read this right, it means it's still worth hanging onto them in case you open a sylvanas, ragnaros, etc when they get moved back to classic.
