In Friday's Hearthstone patch that appeared during BlizzConline, Blizzard dropped a huge bomb that contained four returning card backs as the payload.
Although we don't have exact dates on when these card backs are going to be returning, historically speaking, only one old card back has been made available at a time, and they have been spaced around a month apart. Patches have only brought extra data for one or two of these card backs at a time, likely due to them patching the game so frequently now that they can expect to have a new patch each month that will have room for another card back.
This leads us to speculate that maybe we'll be seeing an increased rate of old card backs returning. The waters have been tested over the past 7 months and maybe Blizzard feels confident that players will purchase them at the faster rate. With over 150 card backs so far, and over 80 of them coming from ranked play, we have 7 years of card backs at one card back per month in the shop. If we saw a card back appear every 2 weeks instead, that's still 3.5 years of content - not to mention the 40000 gold it would cost to obtain all the card backs, which would suck 400 possible packs out of each player's collections over the release period.
We can't say definitively when the returning card backs are going to make an appearance, but we can show you which card backs are due for a return shortly!
The Four Returning Card Backs
Four card backs are coming back, all previous ranked play rewards.
- Lunar New Year - Originally obtained during February 2015 ranked season. (Available Now)
- Thunder Bluff- Originally obtained during February 2016 ranked season.
- Thrall - Originally obtained during December 2015 ranked season.
- Awesome Blossom - Originally obtained during May 2019 ranked season.
- Stolen Thunder - Originally obtained by purchasing The Thunder King hero.
The Thunder King card back is an interesting inclusion on this list because it goes past the four card backs we said we'd be talking about. What gives?
The Thunder King Card Back, Stolen Thunder, Returns?
This card back's return is up in the air. Originally this was made available as a part of a bundle alongside The Thunder King hero portrait for Shamans and it contributed to the Masters Tour prize pool.
We've datamined over the weekend that Sylvanas and The Thunder King hero skins were both going to be returning to the store, but Blizzard never updated the client with a message on Sylvanas' card back like it did for The Thunder King's Stolen Thunder. There are a couple of scenarios that could play out for each of our heroes.
- Sylvanas will return in a bundle with her card back.
- Sylvanas will return without her card back.
- Blizzard made a mistake and she returns with the card back in a separate purchase.
The Thunder King only has two realistic scenarios.
- The Thunder King will return in a bundle with his card back.
- The Thunder King and Stolen Thunder will be available separately.
Datamining suggests that bundles are going to be the way to go with that naming convention being used in their internal naming:
- 19.6 Sylvanas Windrunner bundle
- 19.6 Thunder King bundle
And there is no separate product for the Stolen Thunder card back, which would be required for the item to appear in the shop. This means that Blizzard must have made an error, not updating Sylvanas' card back description as coming back to the shop, and both will be obtained by purchasing a bundle containing their respective hero and card back.
Why These Card Backs?
Blizzard has brought some card backs into the shop as a thematic sale.
- For Halloween, we saw Hallow's End return last year.
- For Christmas, we saw Winter Veil Wreath return last year.
- For Valentine's Day we saw Love is in the Air return this year.
- Clutch of Yogg-Saron and Eyes of C'Thun both made a return to celebrate the Madness at the Darkmoon Faire expansion.
Look at those sweet holiday goodies!
With most of the card backs coming back as thematics, how can we apply this knowledge to the current ones? Easily!
- Lunar New Year's card back is already available in the shop to celebrate the ongoing festivities.
- Awesome Blossom can make a return sometime between mid-March and early-April which is when Cherry Blossoms bloom and festivals take place around the world.
- Thunder Bluff and Thrall are making a comeback to celebrate Forged in the Barrens.
Returning card backs cost 500 Gold or $3 USD and are only available for a limited time. We'll keep you posted on when these card backs make their return.

Thunder King crowdfunding bundle again, here we go with wishful thinking.
So now I want a Pandaria-themed expansion just so I can grab the very first Ranked Play card back.
I'm not into things returning. If you weren't around at the time.. then that's that.
If like me you were back when everything was peaches and cream and you got some sweet card backs to show it, then good for you.
You can only ever showcase one at a time and maybe 1% of players would ever take note and recognize it. If that. Then would proceed to shrug it off, because why care about random opposing player's cardbacks when you play against so many. And with hundreds of cardbacks now. I certainly never do, but then I barely even pay attention to my own.
It's a much better idea to offer them back for collectors and those who might wish to find a new favorite they might've missed by not playing back in the day. Personal aesthetic, nothing more.
There's still hope that I'll see the Maraad card back again!
Do we know timing on the Reveal Calendar, either for Core or Barrens?
Looking forward to the return of Lemonade this summer (fingers crossed)!
still no Pirate card back...
I love cardbacks and I think the art has gotten incredibly better on them. March ladder reward is amazing with the animation, design, and colors.
I do wish that I could actually see my card back more. I think it is a missed opportunity that the card backs we collect only only visible in the "deck" tray. I would like to see them change it such that I can see more of my card backs - especially when you enable random!
Pizza Stone (February 2019) is the one card back I’d pay for, and unfortunately I started playing the game in March 2019. I was worried that they wouldn’t be bring recent card backs like this back for a while, so I’m glad to see Awesome Blossom on the list. With that precedent set, I can hope for a pizza card eventually.
I'm really excited Awesome Blossom is coming back. It's the only card back I am missing from when I started playing hearthstone due to life situations that month. While I wish there was a better way to flesh out our card back collection, (like maybe spending achievement points or something?), I guess waiting around until the ones I want show up in the shop is fine.
