  • Turalyon, the Tenured is a New Paladin Legendary Card Revealed for Hearthstone's Scholomance Academy Expansion

Agreed. Alexandros Mograine (who Baron Rivendare later took the place of) would have been perfect since Kel'Thuzad himself turned him into a death knight.

Perhaps they had the card mechanics in mind first and felt it was best applied to someone who isn't best known for becoming an undead. Oh well.

  • We're Getting a Collectible Neutral Weapon - Sphere of Sapience! Scholomance Academy is Crazy

It's only at the start of your turn

  • Turalyon, the Tenured is a New Paladin Legendary Card Revealed for Hearthstone's Scholomance Academy Expansion

Ture, Scholomance was around long before the 3rd war, but as Lord Alexei Barov's family home. I don't believe it had anything to do with any paladins or schools at all.

That said, I'm also happy for HS to completely twist the lore like this. HS should definitely unshackle itself from the details of Warcraft lore if it fits the HS aesthetic better. It's just that in this case Turalyon feels like the least thematic big paladin character they could have chosen.

  • Turalyon, the Tenured

It's too costly to see any real play unless there was a way to summon it earlier

Lol my bad. :D Gotta learn to read.

With rush it actually seems OK.

  • New Mage & Shaman Minion - Ras Frostwhisper

Off the bat everyone compares it to a Despicable Dreadlord with more potential, and it's easy to see why:

Despicable Dreadlord had the same cost with about the same stat line (slightly more aggressive and slightly less health at 4/5 instead of 3/6). But whereas DD only did 1 damage at the end of your turn to all enemy minions Ras deals 1 damage to all enemies and is improved by spell damage, which both classes have received a legendary with spell damage in AoO.

Unfortunately it's difficult to always fit in spell damage minions into a deck do to their deck building requirements. Mage has used, historically, spell damage minions if their tribal tag was part of a strong meta game - Celestial Emissary and Cosmic Anomaly saw play because Mage had access to Elemental Invocation to greatly discount their cost for a powerful board clear or single target removal. They're currently using Azure Explorer at the moment because of it's synergy with Maylgos and Arcane Breath in Highlander Mage.Mage will also be getting Mozaki, Master duelist who will gain spell damage per spell you play, it's clear these two have synergy with each other and their high health pool might even allow them to become a potent dynamic duo for Mage.

Shamans currently have Squalhunter and Lady Vashj as collectible minions with spell damage, but neither have seen much play since Shaman's evolution tool kit is much stronger than their spell casting value toolkit. They are able to summon the wrath of air totm, but that has a 3/4 chance of being another totem, and it is usually removed once summoned to avoid a shaman from high-rolling with lightning storm. Although in the past Shamans did have spell damage minions in their decks when they were using spirit claws as an aggro/control tool.

Most neutral spell damage minions do not see play aside from Malygos, who is a finishing piece in combo decks, or Bloodmage Thalnos, who is used for card draw.

We haven't seen the full Mage and Shaman list yet, but knowing how the card reveals works this is a sure sign that both classes will be receiving some spell damage minions. Whether they'll be strong enough to make this minion viable remains to be seen.

  • New Paladin Minion - Turalyon, the Tenured

On its face, this is a bit to expensive, but you only need to attack a twice before it's awesome. I honestly think this could be very good in a Libram deck where you have some free buffs in hand by the time this guy comes down. They would make him very hard to remove, and he'd have a soft taunt thanks to his ability to kill anything on the board.

It doesn't have a soft taunt on it. As an aggro player I would gladly go face than trade with this minion, even as midrange I would gladly do the same. In fact, I'd argue that a standard 8/8 for 8 with rush would be a scarier dude than this card.

Yeah, I guess the "soft taunt" status is going to depend on the match-up, but if this ends up being a tech card for control mirrors (where I expect it does have that "soft taunt" status since it can so easily destroy any large, slow threat your opponent might play), I think that's fine. There are plenty of tools in Libram Paladin to wall up with taunts in the midgame and then use [Hearthstone Card (Professor Turalyon) Not Found] along with cheap buffs to suppress any future threats while you develop your late game.

It's also worth pointing out here that while your example of aggro players ignoring this card is entirely valid, it's also common for aggro decks to try to close the game out as early as turn 6. So this is probably never going to be something you're happy to see in that match-up just on the merits of its cost.

  • New Paladin Minion - Turalyon, the Tenured

Seems pretty decent altogether, given that Pally doesn’t really have too much in the way of big removal. Could see it seeing play in a Pure Pally list.

Would probably be a lot better with divine shield though.

  • Suspicious Matchmaking

    Quote From dapperdog

If everyone is paired with the worst matchup they can think off, then there is by definition no worst match since everyone's matches are equally good/bad. So there must be some pairings with good matchups. In other words, we are accusing blizzard of discrimination.

You wouldn't need to give everyone the worst possible match-up. Simply higher odds of a bad match-up.  They have stated before that if your low-skill players get rolled every game they will stop playing (which is something for them to avoid obviously).  In my mind I thought it was just that if you lose enough games you'll start getting biased towards better match-ups, and vise-versa.  This still means low-skill players will have low win-rates and high-skill players will have higher ones, it would just have the effect of keeping both "closer" to 50% than they would be otherwise.

    Quote From dapperdog

Okay, put that aside. Let's assume blizz has control over the MMR directly, as in they can somehow match their favorite decks against its best matchups, and decks they hate into worst matchups, 80% of the time. How does blizz determine what decks fit the description? By certain cards? So if I include most of totem shaman's cards in my deck like Splitting Axe, does that screw their data sufficient enough for me to gum up their plans? If that's so then hsreplay should show some weird deck that should theoretically never work being tier 1 instead of something that makes sense.

I would not assume they have "favorite" or "hated" decks.  Moreover, they would only do something like this (non truly random matchmaking) in the name of a better playing experience on average.  It would be crazy to assume they had "something against" specific decks or players-- I agree with that.  But with the amount of data (of X vs Y deck) they have, even with the "incomplete" HSreplay global summary data, you can code this into matchmaking in a way like I mentioned above.  It would not guarantee you lose or win certain games, just simply "influence" the outcome on average.  For example, its not easy to win a 42% win-rate match-up, but it is hardly impossible.

    Quote From dapperdog

Lets go even further with the idea that blizz wants to maintain a near 50% win rate for everyone no matter what their deck. That's never in doubt. Blizz would prefer a more even spread instead of an odd 80% win rate deck, that's why they do nerfs. If MRR can do the same, why bother with nerfs? Just tank them with controlled MMR. Why bother with so much math, when you can simply change, introduce, or destroy decks by adjusting mana costs, or printing key cards?

To be honest, I'm not a programming or statistics buff (know a little bit though!) but its really not that difficult.  Its all just numbers and code.  Moreover, implementing an ELO/MMR type system requires a stats person.  They certainly have the expertise, resources, knowledge to create whatever type of matchmaking system they want-- its not a hassle for them.  A broken matchmaking will kill a game, so you can assume they certainly pay attention to this detail.  Particularly with an emphasis on players having a good experience (on average).  Nerfs deal with changing and adjusting the meta but there is good reason for them both to exist.

    Quote From dapperdog

Card games are inherently filled with RNG. You can just as easily win good matchups and bad matchups provided that you draw the cards you need and your opponent doen't. You can also help up your bad matchups through deck building, and understanding your deck vs your opponent's deck. One common example is whether to play Bluegill Warrior in libram paladin or not. Simple inclusions like this can make or break the deck's win rate against priest, mage and rogue, traditionally poor matchups.

You don't need to guarantee someone will lose any specific game. I.e. did they have bluegill warrior or not. All you need to do is pair them vs a 42% win-rate match-up and they will lose 42% of the time over time.  Also, changing out Bluegill Warrior will mean you are matchmaking with a different deck and there will be different data as to the worst match-ups against that specific deck (with or without Bluegill Warrior ).

    Quote From dapperdog

Small edit: this post is not a response against any specific individual. I used the word 'you' in this post as a general reference to anyone reading this.

Thank you for your cordial response btw.  I hope you do not take what I was saying the wrong way.   I really do get where you are coming from, but when I saw my previous matches data it suddenly became very difficult to accept the type of rationale I was operating under before (i.e. some of the things yourself and several others have mentioned).  So I seriously get what you all are saying, but how I see it now is:

    (1) I gots data and it dont look good.  Small as it may be.

    (2) There is an incentive for this to be the case both from a profitability and player experience perspective.  (It also would not be dramatic enough to take good players below 50% winrate)

    (3) Many arguments around the net saying this is impossible break down into things like "but it can't be!", "too much risk to blizz to do this", "too little data".

Again, I would love to see the same screenshots I posted for anyone else.  It would be interesting to see if players' sub-50% win-rate decks are disproportionately being matched with their best matchups.

EDIT: Removed "and nobody implied that" because it was not necessary.  And made the 2nd paragraph more readable but did not change the contents.

Really slow control. Chances are you'll use it once before it dies.

Just use Batterhead Card Image or something much cheaper and earlier.

  • Reminder: New Expansion on Aug 26

...Or perhaps more appropriately, "new region + new champions and a bunch of supporting cards", since they have decided to release cards in waves and seem to be downplaying the term "expansion".

    Re: timestamp 4:11 @

     The full schedule should be:

    • Wed, July 22: Patch 1.6 = 3rd & final RT "big" balance patch; start of Spirit Blossom event
    • Wed, Aug 5: Patch 1.7 = 4th & final RT "small" patch; last 2 epic Spirit Blossom quests added
    • Thur, Aug 6: HS Scholomance Academy released
    • Wed, Aug 19: Patch 1.8 = new region + new cards ("expansion-lite"?); end of Spirit Blossom event

For Rising Tides, the tease season started April 7th with Demacia artwork on Twitter and lasted until the MF YouTube announcement on April 27th--the day before RT released on April 28th.  If they follow that same cadence, that will mean teases should start 3 weeks before expansion: July 28th aka this coming Tuesday.  However between Scholomance Academy coming out in the dead middle of that schedule and the fact less cards will be immediately released in this set than RT, I could also see them pushing the start out and just doing a shorter tease season.  (For context: Ashes of Outland was released on April 7th, so there was just a tiny overlap with the start of RT tease season)

  • New Paladin Minion - Turalyon, the Tenured

[Hearthstone Card (Professor Turalyon) Not Found] does seem underwhelming initially when you pay the 8 mana for him; however, this card is pretty strong with Duel! as you get to attack with him twice if you pull it with Duel! based on how Rush works with the spell. This plus First Day of School to help shore up the early game so as not to break your Duel! might allow Big Paladin to be viable in standard. We will just have to wait and see.

Also, [Hearthstone Card (Professor Turalyon) Not Found] doesn't exactly have Poisonous as 1) he doesn't die when attacking 12 Attack targets like Deathwing and 2) if he is attacked by a minion with more than 3 Health on the opponent's turn, that minion's stats won't change.

  • Turalyon, the Tenured

Basically, destroy a minion unless Taunt is in the way, leave a 3/9 with the same effect next turn unless the minion you destroy is poisonous. Seems fine in terms of value; the 3/9 will be a very high priority target and killing 9 health isn't always easy once you lost your biggest thing off the board. That said, it is quite late.

  • Turalyon, the Tenured is a New Paladin Legendary Card Revealed for Hearthstone's Scholomance Academy Expansion

If I recall Scholomance was there way before the 3rd War, it only became the base of operations in the 3rd war. By the 3rd war, they were all then Undead and Liches, etc... this is a "spin on the time line" like One Night in Karazhan was. where Medivh was a jolly, playful person, instead of the Medivh we know from Playing Warcraft. I say don't sweat the small stuff and enjoy it, so far I'm digging this expac.

Thanks for the reminder! I had a golden Dragonqueen as my guaranteed golden from the pre-purchase last season and have been so bored with highlander decks that I deleted all of those deck archetypes! 3200 dust isn't bad and, if needed, I can craft it for 1600 later and pocket the difference!

  • New Neutral Minion - Vectus

Off the bat, 6/6 of stats for 5 mana is good. However, because of his effect, he may or may not be a minion that can be dropped on turn 5 depending on your deck.

The whelps deathrattles are accumulative, the more minions you have die, the more deathrattles the whelps get. So in a deck with mid to expensive deathrattles such as say, Cairne BloodHoof, Convincing Infiltrator and Khartut Defender you probably won't be playing him until turn 7 or 8. Heck, let's look in wild with Jade Rogue - if Aya Blackpaw is played on curve, you wouldn't want to play Vectus until turn 7 so his whelps can get her deathrattle AND the Jade Swarmer's Deathrattle for an additional 2-3 jade golems on their death.

Now, a faster deathrattle deck such as say, face hunter with Toxic Reinforcements, if they were able to get some Leper gnomes and Kobold Sandtroopers to die could stack the deathrattles on the whelps to deal massive damage that would be difficult to work around. Let's say a Hunter is able to get toxic reinforcements off by turn 4, and has killed off all three leper gnomes on turn 5, when Vectus lands on the board his whelps (if I'm correct and they stack deathrattles) will each deal 6 damage to the enemy hero upon death for a total of 12 damage - nearly half of your opponents life points.

There's a lot of potential for this card with any class with access to strong death rattles, it'll be interesting to see where this card goes in constructed and wild.

  • Turalyon, the Tenured is a New Paladin Legendary Card Revealed for Hearthstone's Scholomance Academy Expansion

Like how cool would it be if instead we got one of the paladins from the 4 horsemen fight in Naxx? The idea that he had some kind of relationship with them prior to then wouldn't be such a stretch. Certainly not as big as Turalyon. The one paladin that def missed all of this.

This effect already exists. It's called poisonous.

    No.

A 3/12 rush with poisonous dies against Deathwing and leaves a 6/6 body when attacks Tirion Fordring.

Its a sweet effect better than poisonous.

And this would leave a 6/3 body when it attacks Tirion Fordring. So yes, there is a small difference, but only if the minion you're attacking has divine shield.

Edit: My bad. I didn't notice this also set its attack to 3. That makes this card a lot stronger.

This is different from poisonous because it is only active on your turn, and also because in addition to reducing it's health, it also reduces it's attack. This means that no matter what this guy punches, he will always end up as a 3/9.

Similar sure, but against any minion with 4 or more attack it’s better.  A more accurate comparison is a new Keeper of Uldaman that potentially gets the effect off multiple times.

But unless Pally gets more tools to support this archetype it’ll likely see little play unless generated off other cards.

Oh yes, there's a lot of fudging regarding the school: I don't think KT even tried to pretend it was anything other than the horrific school of necromancy that HS has tucked away in the basement.

I think it's impossible to say whether Turalyon and Alleria had joined the army of the light yet because they were in the twisting nether so time went all funny (squeezing 1000 years into 24, or something like it). I'm fine with him being here on the basis that HS 'lore' is just stories told in a tavern, so the possibly drunk story-teller might get their timelines mixed up. Even so, most important paladins actually did fight and/or end up joining the scourge, so there were surely better options.

  • Turalyon, the Tenured is a New Paladin Legendary Card Revealed for Hearthstone's Scholomance Academy Expansion

I agree on the lore front. Would of rathered seen someone from the argent dawn or scarlet crusade in this spot with the effect.

I like the effect. A remove that leaves a body is always good. Paladin has less removal than most classes so I can see this being used. Similar to Eadric or the taunt from ungoro (on phone or I'd look it up). Libram of justice is still the go to removal I think but this has a chance.
