It looks pretty cool!  The whole realm of strategizing and summoning minions reminds me of my college days, where juggling assignments and gaming breaks was a common theme. Speaking of college, back then,  https://domypaper.com/ were a lifesaver for me when it came to writing essays and papers while still having time for some Hearthstone matches. It's great to see that gaming and academic support can go hand in hand, making those study breaks even more enjoyable!

DK is almost dead in Wild. I have recently had some success with Even Rainbow DK (got 11x in August and day 1 legend in September), but if you look at meta reports, there usually isn't a single DK deck to be found on them. The card base just isn't big enough yet to create the hyper synergies you need to survive in Wild sadly. Your only shot is to create something that is good at targetting meta decks (like Even DK is very good at beating board based Aggro [Shadow Priest and Pirate DH]).

  • What Are You Playing? Super September 2024

Have you ever played a game that you really enjoyed, and wanted to keep playing, but felt like you couldn't as readily because of the energy + focus the game required of you? That's me with Black Myth: Wukong lol. It was a similar thing with DOOM 2016, although that game was even more intense and thus exhausting to play XD

I've taken like a two-week unplanned "break" from Wukong because I've struggled to reestablish my energy levels: whether it's being tired from work, or my depression, or distractions like the NFL starting back up again, focusing my attention enough to be like "Alright, I'm gonna play Wukong now!" has been a challenge. It's been more "I'll just play Diablo IV for a bit while the TV is on", "oh, Snap's missions are full again; guess I'll play those," you know? Still playing games, but less enthused than I'd like.

@Echo: Homm3 has a fan-made expansion called HOTA (horn of the abyss) which you can also play online, with a lobby! There's another "branch" too which allows online play but i think much less known, called VCMI (in it you can download any mods you want + a HOTA one which brings the town(s) from it etc). It also has some specific mods recommended for online play.

Both of these expansions have their own campaign(s), with many different towns and such. Yes, you should make 1 installation of homm3 for each of the expansions (to keep them clean and not have any funny business in the campaigns).

PS: WoG was the best, too bad no one plays it anymore :( it was made specifically for online play, especially due to it allowing the specific alteration of some (hidden?) rules.

Thanks for the article.  I agree that standard deckbuilding for DK is probably the least satisfying in all the classes.

For thoroughness, I figure we should note that a wild player won’t see quite the same problem as those triple builds will eventually have enough support for a real strategy… eventually.  Personally I tend to avoid wild so I don’t really know how DK fairs out there.  I did play a lot of duels (rip) and having big collections of old cards would lead to some satisfying interactions.  So, as long as there is at least one viable DK in standard, the class isn’t dead (tee hee), but maybe one of those solutions would mix it up.  Maybe a legendary like renethal where if it’s in your deck, you get another rune for building…

Are you not also facing Big Spell Tourist Mage every game? Just played 15 games and 13 of them were against Mage :-/

It's factory building month for me.

First I tried Shapez 2, an abstract factory builder which despite having just launched in early access is very polished. I got through all of the "campaign" (no story, but a series of tasks that become more challenging as you progress). The end game is to build a "make anything machine" and while mine does work, it cannot build everything yet (no crystals) and it could be optimized quite a bit still. I got a bit burned out by the end, but I put in over 100 hours and I'm likely to pick it up again in the future.

Yesterday the 1.0 release of Satisfactory happened and I've been playing that with friends. So far I haven't seen all that many changes compared to early access, but there are snippets of lore added (the alien artifacts now do something) and some quality of life improvements. We picked a different starting location from last time, so that already makes the game different. Highly recommended if you like building stuff. You might start out building spaghetti factories, move on to carefully planned efficient factories and in the end acquire an appreciation for brutalist architecture.

Interesting article, thanks for that. I'm leaning towards wanting more double-Runed cards and it would totally make sense to introduce these in the last set of the year. The number of cards for the class can stay the same that way - you dish out a few double-Runed cards and flesh out the decks with the cards from the earlier expansions of the year.

Like, first you build up a collection of single-Runed filler cards that add up to competitve rainbow decks for the time being, then you finish the cycle with double-Runed cards that allow you to branch off into multiple directions. Does that make sense?

Gotta say I like the creativity of option 2 as well! That would probably make the whole system too complicated though. I mean, try to explain that to a new player.

Taking away the whole system would be sad and mean a loss of tons of flavor. Let's hope the devs find a better way to address this!

Awesome read. I picked up DK because it's the last one I have to get to 500 wins and been thinking about the same issue.

I like your ideas way more than what I thought: Working around rune synergy and making cards have extra effect if you play them in rune order (like Arfus) or if played in quantity order (1 >2 >3) so triple runes are really powerful if played after a 1 and 2 rune cards.

I actually love the Tourist mechanic. However, I think the mechanic has a negative effect on the power level of the set as a whole. Feels like Blizz was afraid of mixing classes too much. It could be toxic if taken too far. Though the Tourists overall (the ones I opened) I've liked.

Sunsapper Lynessa has been my favorite.  She's been a fun finisher and the Rogue cards have been a welcome addition.

While I can't speak to your issues with Hunter, I felt the opposite with Warlock. I didn't know what I wanted the Warlock cards for in Rogue (other than the drink). I do like Maestra, Mask Merchant effect is fun though.

Turbulus also seems like an odd choice but I haven't tried it myself yet.

I did try Portalmancer Skyla and she's been much more fun than expected. I did both a big spell version and a Agency Espionage version I got wrecked by. Been a fun start to the miniset.

Chillin' Vol'jin I actually just opened. Out of the 10ish games I played it was a blast. Felt good in the deck.

I'll have to wait and see the mini sets true impact. While the power level looked very low it's feeling okay so far.

An appropriate thread for me to come back from the dead haha

I don't think they'd need to deviate a lot from their current approach, except printing more double non-mixed cards. This would combine the best aspects of solutions number 2 and number 4, IMO.

    5) Make certain cards have an option in deckbuilding to assign certain combinations of Runes to it, and the card changes its effects based on the rune combination it can have. For example, you can make a card have 2 Blood or 1 Unholy, and its effects will change according to whether it is made to be 2 Blood or 1 Unholy.

  • Hearthstone Patch 30.4 Brings The Traveling Travel Agency Mini-Set, Mythic Ragnaros, and More!

Probably have to get the miniset but its kinda the saddest miniset Ive seen thus far.

Perhaps its an indication of how poor the tourist mechanic really is. Pre-buff, most of the tourist cards are nigh unplayable shite, but yet you simply have to have them because the alternative is to not play the expansion, or indeed the game itself. Not to mention the persistent feeling like the cards for each class are actually designed for the purposes of other classes. Hunter for example may well not even have featured at all this expansion because ironically its cards are better suited in other classes.

Same with this miniset. Not inspiring to me, but yet the two legendary tourist are probably must haves, regardless of how good (or more likely how boring) they are.

A bit sad that I'm more exited about the wild game boards coming to standard than the actual mini-set. While Blizzard did nail the theme well, the effects of the cards are pretty lackluster and I feel they'll only see play after standard rotation next year. Only the new Zephrys looks remotely exciting. Going to save my 2000 gold and open these cards in packs instead.

Yup correct, that's how I see it as well. Which means taunts would be the best minions to keep the cube alive. Deathrattle Taunts are even better

I think it means it happens as long as the Cube stays on board. The Cube gives itself the triggered effect to summon a copy of what it ate at the end of the turn.

  • The Out of Games Staff Talks About the PlayStation 2 and Their Favorite Games For It

Great article, and a nice blast of nostalgia. I didn't have a ton of experience playing PS2 growing, so there's only a couple games I would add to your (already extensive) list.

Guitar Hero. A unique experience, especially if you also had the guitar-shaped controller. The game I played the most was Guitar Hero III, and it was so cool to attempt a tricky guitar solo in front of a reactive audience that would boo you off the stage if you missed too many notes. Through the Fire and Flames is probably the song that is most associated with that game, but the song I remember most is Prayer of the Refugee. It also introduced me to bands I still listen to; I didn't have a lot of ways to discover music back then, so that list includes names like The Killers, Weezer, Rage Against the Machine, and Pearl Jam.

Star Wars Battlefront. I was a big ol' fan of the Star War growing up so of course my favorite PS2 game ever is Star Wars Battlefront II. It took everything great about the first game (which I also loved) and ramped it up with more maps plus the chance to play as a Jedi or Sith or Boba Fett. I never grokked the space battles (the points system is janky, especially when all I really want to do is land in the enemy ship's hangar and shoot pilots trying to get in their ships) but the bigger campaign and changes to Galactic Conquest made it such a great time and I definitely played it way too much.

  • New Paladin Spell - Vacation Planning

This is OK. It's not the best Silver Hand summoner in the game, and its effect seems best for a slower deck - maybe Highlander Paladin?
