  • Barrier and Surviving Damage

    Quote From BlueSpark
    Quote From FortyDust

Just accept that Barrier negates damage after it has been dealt, and everything falls into place for this and many other interactions (such as Overwhelm).

To me, this contradicts the meaning of "dealing" damage. If damage is dealt, the target has to lose the corresponding amount of health - that's how I see it. You could talk about the damage being assigned before the barrier negates it and prevents it from being dealt.

I suppose what 40D is getting at is that the damage exists, and then is reduced to 0 - rather than in Frostbite's case where the strike never happens and so there's nothing to reduce.

I would maintain that it's not intuitive in the least, but there you are.

Thing is, shareholders are bound to acknowledge that putting customers (and product originality) ahead of immediate revenue is actually what made Blizzard such a valuable brand!

Granted, i am no professional in finance, but if i were a shareholder i'd be appalled by Activision-Blizzard in recent years!

Afterall, finance is about perceived future value. Immediate profit is just a variable of the function.

Becoming shareholder of such a company, with immediate profit in mind, sounds contradictory to me.

I do hope that the several mistakes of the recent years (amongst the good things they released) are indeed just mistakes, not really led by blind profit-driven mindset (which is bound to lead to collapse sooner or later).

The myth of shareholders being long termers is just that, a myth. Most shareholders don't buy in so some manager can tell them 'I have a great idea that will sink profits for a few quarters but in the long run it'll be great'. Money is what you can see on the table, not in your dreams.

The 'mistakes' can be seen a mile away to anyone with even the slightest amount of passion in gaming. The problem with Reforged was, I suspect, a slashed budget based on estimated sales so it can meet expectations of profit. The blitzchung issue is pure greed, simple. No corporate figure wants to lose access to the 2nd biggest market in the world just because of 'issues'.

Shareholders care about money. They occasionally care about other stuff, but there's a good reason why the tops at the top and the bottom feeds on crumbs left behind

Unfortunately that's not how real-world finance tends to work. Most investment on this sort of scale expects to see significant returns in a max 3-5 year window. If you're investing for long-term growth you typically diversify heavily to give a better stability.

I doubt entertainment companies are typical investment targets for long-term growth in any case because the medium is inherently fickle. You don't invest for the long term in an industry that can see massive consumer movement in the space of a few weeks.

@FieselFitz - the phrase 'once bitten twice shy' comes to mind... :P

  • Worst deck archetype you've faced (mini rant thread)

    Quote From Wendeee

Millbane rogue was the worst. At one hand, I am glad that it is gone. On the other hand, I would like to meet them on ladder and steal their win condition with Kobold Stickyfinger :)

Sadly at the time it was reasonably popular I was playing Renolock, so the best I could hope for was that they'd get greedy and misplay - empty their deck then break their weapon without immediately re-drawing it. If they did that then Gnomeferatu would auto-win the game. Sadly, a halfway-decent Mill Rogue player wouldn't let that happen, so I'd need to survive long enough to draw both Gluttonous Ooze AND the Gnomeferatu without either being milled, which rarely happened.

  • Guaranteed method of specific Champion/Epic drops?

    Quote From BlueSpark

Well, violating their terms and abusing/exploiting the system are two entirely different things (one is a legal and the other a moral issue). I personally don't care if people use the refund system to their benefit this way, but I could see Riot changing its implementation if they notice an increase in this kind of behavior.

I personally don't see a moral issue with this either and I concur, this will be patched at some point for sure

  • The Full Story of Hearthstone's Year of the Dragon

Elise is both a druid and priest, Finley is a paladin/shaman, Reno a rogue/mage and Brann a hunter/warrior. This is actually coded into the game, as when using them in one of the tavern brawls you could complete quests for both classes for each hero.

Anyway, they got treasures for both classes, with the class assigned to each best matching the mechanics of that class. E.g. Sr. Scout having windfury --> shaman. The only iffy one is Sr. Excavator, but neither hunter nor warrior have are huge on (unconditional) card draw so I suppose they based it on the look of the character instead of mechanics.

  • Hot take: I'm so bored of Standard I'd welcome Baku back with open arms for this last month.

(I say Baku because I'm pretty sure Even decks wouldn't even be a thing anymore if Genn was still in Standard. Would they? Everything that was pulling the Even decks together all rotated out anyway before the Odd/Even stuff got HoF'd and I just don't see how they'd go on without those tools. Then again, I can't say I ever tried that hard to find a way to salvage them, so the world will never know.)

    ANYWAY.

What it says on the tin, basically. We're in that annual month-before-rotation lull we always get into and even though it shouldn't feel quite as bad as last year where so many OP cards just overstayed their welcome (and it doesn't!) I'd be lying to you if I told you I'm still finding Standard engaging. I'm not saying the Galakrond's Awakening mini-expac didn't shake things up a bit, it absolutely did and gave us a new champion in Dragon Hunter, but at the end of the day... eh. It's still all the same decks, and I'm just so desperate for some variety that I'd gladly take Odd Warrior or Paladin or Mage or whatever back.

...And it's weird that I expect a rotation to fix all of this, you know? As I've covered before: so many cards got shut out of the meta it barely even FEELS like we're going to rotate.

Like, I'm 95% certain that the HOF cards are going to make a bigger impact than the actual set rotation. Barely exaggerating. Maybe a little. But not much. Depends on what they actually decide to cut, but remember folks, you heard it here first.

But despite my lack of a reason to believe so, I do, because... this is just how it goes, we've been through this long enough that we know the routine. The game gets boring and stale right before the rotation, and poof, all of a sudden we're in a whole new world. I don't expect AS drastic of a change this year, largely because you really CAN'T get much different than going from Year of the Mammoth to the Rise of Shadows expac with no more death knights running around, but I think Blizz will come through for us, especially with all this hype from people who were at the recent summit.

So no, this isn't a salt thread by any means. Just the usual, bored with the game around this time of year. But I already know I'll be dropping cash to complete the new Expansion on the day it comes out, so I'll try to hang in there, grind out my daily quests, and just wait for the news to motivate me a little more.

How are the rest of y'all handling the rotation countdown blues? Do you agree it's a lot better this year? Do you feel Galakrond's Awakening did enough to keep the game fresh for the extra month and a half or so before the new year begins?

  • no Champion in lvl 10 Vault?

    Quote From Bystekhilcar
Personally I'm not really having any issues with the rate of unlocks, but to each their own I guess.

I never said I had any issues with it, either. Just pointing out that there's a notable difference with the new model. At least I find 4 guaranteed champions per week instead of 3 quite significant. But as sinti said, this is mainly an issue for the most active of players. Which does include me, but I'm OK with 3 weekly champions.

  • Guaranteed method of specific Champion/Epic drops?

afaik (could be wrong) there is no limit to how many, although you have a week to refund. I don't actually think this is abuse as they state on their site that you can refund for ANY reason as long it's unplayed. Sure they might not like it as they want you to buy the cards, but it's not going against their terms in any way.

  • How to "cement HS for the next decade" speculations thread

Most players seem sceptical about this announcement - i'm still hopeful that they will do something good for the players.

True that some of the streamers are easily satisfied or shout out that they are impressed about some changes but not every one - sure we have to wait and see but to say don't believe what they are saying is also just a plain and ignorant comment - i do not know why many players have that negative attitude towards the game or the dev's ?! - they simply cannot please everyone!

Like i said - i myself am still hopeful about this announcement and therefor hyped about upcoming changes etc.

  • The Full Story of Hearthstone's Year of the Dragon

Why is Sr. Navigator priest card when it belongs to Elise (druid) and why is Sr. Scout a shaman card when it belongs to Finley (paladin)? And why did I notice now? Why do I even care since these are adventure cards only that are 1/2 year old?

Alright, so I think I got it:

You will need Knife Juggler with Radiant Elemental along with Test Subject, Embalming Ritual & Holy Smite ; from there, you will be able to deal infinite damage to your subject while juggler ping for free!

... oh wait, Radiant Elemental is Un'Goro tho ...

Thanks for the reply - we already managed to kill him with standard only cards :)

We made a Standard Freeze Mage and got him down with after a few tries - once you get lucky enough to draw all your freeze Spells you just have to hit him with Alex and Fireballs / Pyro etc

  • Guaranteed method of specific Champion/Epic drops?

Is there a refund limit? I can't imagine they haven't thought about people abusing the refund system.

I guess the champion would turn into a lot of shards.

Don't put your hopes up it's Activison Blizzard we are talking about it will look good on paper but in the long run they will take more money from us if we want to continue playing.

    Hey dude.
Believe me or not but ATVI-Blizzard is changing. They've been kinda scared from past community issues about HK and MTX.

I expect some big news this week, something that will change the way we see Activision forever:
-Probably today, they will announce a F2P Battle Royale Game called "WARZONE"
-Thursday, New Year Announcement will introduce some substantial change to HS economy, aiming to improve the F2P Experience.

That's enough to think that they are shifting their business-set. And probably it's just the beginning...

    How do you know that?

W3:refunded and HK case are really stuff that showed the true face of Blizzard

also VARIOUS bugs that went live like adventure card rewards in arena and adventure cards in random effects...

As well as Runettera showing that.. yes you can make the economy F2P, and be enjoyable..

in HS it's just..  you can't experiment at all... that really turned me down.. I am only doing quest to keep up with the game RN..

Even the news of W3R Pro Event is plagued by disconnects. That'll show you how bad Blizzard is right now. They're no longer the same developer who cares about the game or it's fan-based players (20 years of the best game history died just like that).

EDIT. I'll just let this out. In the next Blizzcon event, Blizzard will once again apologize for it. Mark my words.

Its the same developer, but obviously the finance has been restricted against blizzard to do 'Blizzardy things'. Note that Activision have been laying off workers in the wake of a less than expected, but nevertheless profitable, quarter.

Its still the same developer, just no longer putting customers ahead of profits like it used it be. After all, its all corporate at the end.

It has happened to many successful companies once they decide to sign in with a conglomerate. Suddenly you no longer call the shots on what is a successful quarter.

  • Custom Galio champion

    Oof. Big stats.

10/10 challenger for 10 is probably fair for a Champion, but I think it's a little too strong with 'immune to spells' bolted on as well. Part of the reason higher cost cards get a beneficial premium is they're risky plays that can be countered by removal, and that's obviously less true when removal can't touch it!

The level-up condition I'm undecided about, as I don't really pay attention to how much spell vs regular mana I spend over the course of the game. I like that it's there, but I feel the card should maybe do something interesting rather than just getting a fat stats buff - you'd want a good reason to try to level him up over the course of the game, thus changing your entire game plan, because I suspect a flat +5/+5 isn't enough to get there (i.e. the player wouldn't build or play any differently and if he levels, he levels).

  • Guaranteed method of specific Champion/Epic drops?

Cool, I was under the assumption you can refund any card if the card was not used within a week.

    From the Official site:

If you’ve made a purchase you need to reverse for any reason, unused items can be refunded* within 7 days of purchase. What’s even better is that you can refund right there in the client! Just keep in mind that some items, like the Starter Bundle, cannot be refunded. You’ll be notified before you purchase any non-refundable item.

I don't see how this would not apply in this case. I have personally refunded many unused cards in-game, instantly, and without contacting support.

"If you’ve made a purchase you need to reverse for any reason, unused items can be refunded"

Maybe I'm missing an exception to the rule.
