I admit, I haven't played Artifact myself but I believe these factors alone are enough to spell disaster in any upcoming cardgame. It doesn't matter if the game itself is good or not when no one is willing to give it a chance. Even if it was the best one out there, a card game is still a card game; there can't be enough variation to make it $40+ better than Shadowverse/ Eternal/ etc
Try playing it to form a more educated opinion(or not I don't blame you). Or at least watch some gameplay. If you actually played it you will understand why it failed. I believe if it was a solid game the pay model wouldn't have mattered. It has a strong brand and an amazing company with a big fan base.
Hearthstone succeeded not because it was the first; far from it. The game was really easy to follow, really easy to learn, a great art style, and advanced tournament play showed the game had a high level of depth and it simply wasn't curve stone at higher levels. Artifact even failed to show advanced depth in tournament play. People didn't mind shelling out cash on the game because its gameplay was solid. The same would apply to Artifact if that was the case. If anything Artifact was actually much cheaper to play than Hearthstone. But the main problem as I said there was no constructed ladder on release. The games main focus was draft. That has big problems in itself.
If you think the answer is as simple as its pay model I am glad you are not in charge of a development team. The game is flawed in many ways. Simply changing it to free to play will not fix it. AND why the game is still not released as free to play. Valve could have simply made the game free and give people who bought the game free packs for the cost they invested. Valve themselves know the pay model is not the real problem. If it was fixing it would be quick and easy. The developer interviews already stated the game is going to be reconstructed and reconditioned.
Well you need to wait for a meta that doesn't just kill you by placing bombs in your deck or hitting you in the face with weapons/chargers/lackeys/spells. Then you're good to go :)!
Thunderhead was already being played in some variations of both Murloc and Control shaman, and was a very good card in both. It's gonna be played more for sure, especially now that it will survive 5x Warpath.
Doh! We need a {card} tag that works for Magic on here. It's hard work going and looking up all these cards that I haven't memorised yet to know what they do! Haha!
Discount the Boars and play them with Electra and Bloodlust for a max of 14 damage.
The Deckhands add another 16 damage if you have a weapon and all the pieces together.
Some combination of those cards and chipping away with Likkim at the health total should get you lethal.
Ah alright, missed the helpless hatchlings, now it makes sense. Still a lot of setup needed and one taunt trows your gameplan overboard. i also don't think there is a lot of "chipping" to be done, almost no minions or damage.
Is there any particular colour scheme you think would be better? Having a few options for people would be great, so knowing some that people think would be better for them would be helpful.
You didn't ask me but I will say as someone whose eyesight could be a lot better black type on cream or beige is very helpful. However black type on white is worse than white type on black or gray.
A forum skin wouldn't have to be beige to be easy on the eyes. It could be powder blue, or a pale rose pink, etc. I've used options like that in the past on other forums.
There's a decent sized group of people who get headaches reading light text on dark. It's a physiological trait that you either have or your don't. Those people would absolutely be driven away by this color scheme so I wouldn't recommend giving this issue a low priority, if I may be so bold
As for other colors ... the HS wiki has a nice "pages in a collection" theme going on if you want to tie in with the game. A "hearthpwn" color theme might help people transition. Personally, I'm overjoyed by the current dark mode and hope you don't simply override it
Even if I play what I think was a balanced even game (not a trample one way or the other) if I try to add people when I win; most of the time they wont anyway.
I have a much better chance if I lost. Fragile Ego's being what they are.
p.s. everytime I play I emote hello at the start, then block all emotes. Just got sick of mungrels abusing emotes to rub in their win or a lucky swing draw. I'll still emote well played even though I cant see what the response is.
All of you are way overthinking it. The failure of Artifact was caused by the lack of f2p options alone. HS got away with being expensive because it was the first ever big digital card game. People joined because there were no good alternatives. By joining, you start building a collection, which is an investment (time or monetary) which makes it difficult to quit or switch to another card game
Artifact, on the other hand, was launched after many free alternatives have been released. A player getting into card games would have a lot of incentive to avoid this title and instead go for one of the free indie options. Meanwhile, players invested into HS already would not want to abandon their investment and because they have the experience, they're aware of how expensive a card game can be if the creators are inclined to charge them
A part of why HS is still the most successful digital card game out there is because of its playerbase. It's a lot more fun when I can share my aviana dragon druid or discuss quest rogue strategy among friends or on forums. The pricing structure prevented that big community from forming for Artifact before it even had a chance.
Speaking of which, the card free market probably fueled its downfall once things clearly started looking south. Players leaving the game en mass meant the value of cards is decreasing by the day. Players who are on the fence about leaving are incentivized to cash out their cards sooner rather than later
The obvious way to "break" this card is to reduce it's cost , a warlock summoning stone will reduce it to 1 as will the priest card that was nerfed.
So there probably will be a viable (or fun) mech warlock or mech priest. Late in the game it will still allow any mech to deal 2x mana to the opponents face.
I can also see druid, shaman , warrior and of course hunter making use of this card.
Context - I was playing token druid, opponent was on bomb warrior. I was rank 6, 5 stars; he was rank 5.
On turn 2, I went face instead of trading with his Loot Hoarder, allowing him a free trade with my Dire Wolf Alpha. I'm fully aware that this looks like a mistake, but against a warrior, it's extremely important to get in as much damage as possible as early as possible with token druid, due to board wipe potentials. So I know it looks foolish, but I do it anyways. He emotes, "That was a mistake." I think I muted him.
I do, in fact win the game. Apparently he didn't have board wipes. I think I emoted "well played," because I always do that. To me, it's meant to be a polite way to end a game. Am I crazy to think it's polite to end a game with "well played"? Should I just never emote? Anyways, here's what happened after the game. The filtered words are f-bombs. (Side note: I'm married and have two children.)
Edit: Apparently I am inept at using the image insertion feature. Basically he screamed at me for emoting and then unfriended. I friended him again to inform him he did first, and he screamed some more. Here's the image link: Screen Capture of the comments

This shouldn't be called "fatigue mage". This is just a control mage.
Fatigue mage is a deck that tries to fatigue as fast as possible to drop chef nomi.

(Non-Greedy) Pogo Rogue
Does no one realise that magic carpet will work with pogo hopper after buff could lead to insane combos and the need for shark tooth blade

not to mention it now lines up better with Psychmelon
Home Brew I made after a War of the Sparks Draft.

I'll go with the first one.
Mountain Giant
8/8 elemental
Ranked Pogo-Hopper (Rise-of-Mech)
Hmm seems interesting, I had a similar idea but with myra's, magic carpet, and shark spirit

Anyway when it works, it works ;-)

Gloop sprayer might if Heal Druid becomes a real thing. Since it can now be played with the 3 mana healing spell aswell.
Zilliax cannot be discovered?
Ok thx, seems strange I never see him after 1 month but hey, rng is rng.

I think it's today as well, so keep an arena run at 2 losses to get maximum value from it when the rotation lands.
