Yingdi, a Chinese web portal for card games, had a chance to interview Hearthstone's Dean Ayala this past month and they spoke about card balance, rng, and Demon Hunters. Czhihong translated the interview and posted it on reddit. We've recapped it down below.
Card Balance
- Looking back, Dean thinks they would have made more balance changes to Demon Hunters right away.
- We're getting another balance patch before the expansion arrives.
- Expect the expansion to shake up the Demon Hunter win rates the most.
- Zephrys the Great and Dragonqueen Alexstrasza decks have been called out. If they are top tier next expansion, changes may happen to those decks.
- Dragoncaster may be addressed in an upcoming patch.
- Galakrond, the Nightmare may receive a change to make the cards drawn cost (1) instead of the current (0).
RNG
- We should expect less randomly generated resources next year and even in the expansions later this year.
- The tools we have right now to generate resources is likely the highest it will ever be.
- Part of the issue is that the cards that generate resources right now are just really good so we see them all the time.
Here are some select quotes from the interview.
Quote From Iksar via Yingdi (Translated by Czhihong) When all classes start generating resources outside their deck it makes the classes that specialize in resource generation like Priest or Mage feel less special.
Puzzlebox is probably the appropriate power level on its own but with Dragoncaster it's coming out a little earlier than we'd like in highly competitive decks. We'll likely look to address that in an upcoming patch.
Usually, when we make a card cost (0) it's a reward for building your deck in a particular fashion. We like to make those cards powerful so players are actually motivated to build their decks differently. In the case of Dragoncaster you end up including high mana spells that you might not have otherwise.
For Rogue's Galakrond, you get (0) mana cards but only because you put a large number of the other Galakrond cards in your deck. One issue that comes from having (0) mana cards is that they can result in really big unexpected swing turns. Rogue is probably the biggest offender of that right now when it plays a fully invoked Galakrond.
If the cards you drew off Galakrond cost (1), the card would obviously be less powerful but it would also result in a pause between the turn you play Galakrond and the turn you play all the cheap cards from your hand. This is a change we've been talking about making lately so that players have a turn to prepare rather than having to deal with so many resources all at once.
For Skull, I think those cards being reduced to (0) is less of a problem because Skull itself isn't also a tempo card. After your opponent plays a skull, they either play the cards that turn or hold them in hand to have a big swing turn later. In the case where they hold the cards, their opponent has some time to prepare which we think is healthy gameplay.
Comments
It's really hard to balance a class that is introduced with 6 less years of cards compared to every other class, they had to make some cards very strong so it won't be underplayed when introduced, they at least addressed most problematic cards by now.
Also it's good they didn't just kill every single OP card and made them unplayable.
Do you really think that the fact that a dev likes a certain archetype means that it will be continuously pushed? Cause if your answer is yes then I'm afraid you're pretty narrow-minded. No offense but it's just the truth.
The devs are people like us, who have presences and such, but I really (and I can't stress it enough) doubt that their personal biases are the main parameter they use to balance the game. It would be extremely foolish and the game would be in a much more terrible situation.
Iksar just went through an interview in which he got asked some personal questions, what did you expect him to answer? "Well, I can't say any deck above tier 2 cause then the community will cry over my personal tastes, so I'll go with Mech Mage to make everyone happy"? People like playing strong deck, no shit.
Arcane Flakmage (in Wild at least) is a stupid card and I can get along with it, but Mage is supposed to be good at Secrets (even the last set got us a couple goodies), so what?
Imagine all the devs enjoying Tempo Warrior or Wild Reno Priest right now, but just because you don't know their name then everything is fine and not biased?
i guess i expressed wrongly, cause i never meant to say because they like secret mage they are gonna push it. i never intended to correlate that, so thanks for saying that im narrow minded despite the fact that i never said they push secret mage cause they like it.
I meant it as an example of how can we expect big things from someone that enjoys playing that narrow minded deck? (thought i could use your own expression).
I mean this is the same ppl that made Genn and Baku, saw the mistake so they HoF it and then release a class with the only 1 mana hp in the game without any deck restrictions. This is what im trying to say. plus they keep nerfing DH forgetting or not wanting to change the thing that is most broken which is that Warglaives of Azzinoth. the amount of times ive seen ppl getting back stab and shadow step in their galakrond is insane so now they wanna put it at 1 cost? how about reduce the cards cost instead? skull apprently is fine? cmon
You forgot to add /s
The nerfs to Dragonqueen Alex and the genie guy I have to assume is more for highlander hunter. Mage will just get shot down in the crossfire as usual.
Dragoncaster i can see being an issue, probably can be changed to “reduce the cost of your next spell by X” for some value of X. But the combination of all of the above will bury highlander mage unfairly.
So Warrior and DH are perfectly fine, apparently... Ok...
TBH I can't see how an expansion can reduce the power and synergies in those classes. Not without introducing even more broken cards and synergies.
I'm glad Wild suffers much less from all this (although it's not perfectly fine either).
"Expect the expansion to shake up the Demon Hunter win rates the most." they are making it higher haha.
Joke aside, nice to know they plan to patch before expansion, this was going to be a long month if not
FYI, I assume you mean Dragonqueen Alexstrasza and not Alexstrasza.
Correct, fixed!
so rogue is gonna get the draw backstab and shadowstep costing 1? savage. while demon hunter gets 5 mana glaivebound discount to 2. brilliant...brilliant
