It has been fairly obvious that the third expansion this year was going to be Darkmoon Faire, a fact we even touched upon a couple of weeks ago, but has Blizzard really gone and teased it even more?
Thanks to IncreaseFun on reddit for the initial trailer detective work showcasing the Darkmoon documents.
Before we get into today's Scholomance Academy trailer, let's look at the facts. In the Year of the Phoenix set spoiler image presented earlier this year, the Darkmoon Faire's card back was very clearly used.
This already had us and the overall community excited that we'd surely get to explore Darkmoon Faire, but could this be a diversion instead? In today's trailer for the upcoming Scholomance Academy set, a couple of still images presented some very interesting details.
Darkmoon Documents
In our first image, we've got a look at some fake desktop icons. Two of which are "scrl" type files, which are clearly just magical word files. Normally, we'd pass off these icons as the team just being funny, but there's no way you reference Darkmoon Faire without it being tied to the third expansion. Are there other references to it as well?
The "CotD" file may be damning. Likely standing for the "Cult of the Damned", an organization that serves The Lich King, perhaps they have some ties to Azeroth's freak show run by Silas Darkmoon, or maybe it's just because Kel'Thuzad happens to be the Archlich and Leader of the cult. Also present was an opened photo of Silas himself and some Darkmoon banners. These images of the Darkmoon Faire were present beside images of Old Gods cards and some from Curse of Naxxramas.
What makes this very interesting though is the speculation in the World of Warcraft community that the faire has deep ties to the Old Gods. When looking at Hearthstone, peak Hearthstone was Whispers of the Old Gods. While some, myself included, will argue the expansion had some of the most interesting cards in the game that really defined their respective metas, the simple truth is that when looking at numbers, Hearthstone traffic was at its peak at that point in time. With the perfect theme, everyone loves Old Gods, Blizzard knows they can bring that beautiful magic back and could end the year with a huge bang by using the Darkmoon Faire's potential Old Gods ties. It really wouldn't be surprising at all to see them bringing our friendly tentacle overlords back in some way (cough, [Hearthstone Card (Puzzlebox of Yogg-Saron) Not Found]).
Present in the video near the beginning was a folder named "TappingOldGodPower" with another one named "DMFaire_SchoolBooth". Does Silas use the faire to recruit students and teach them the ways of the Old Gods? We're getting into some seriously dark stuff that isn't likely Warcraft canon, but I wish that it was.
If you watch the video, you'll hear the Hearthstone team talk about how this is clearly Kel'Thuzad laptop and that they should use the information on it for an expansion. It's a good thing that KT was doing all the "TheOldGods.scrl" research then!
Kel'Thuzad has certainly been talking with a couple of totally tentacular friends.
Or, maybe Blizzard has no plans on doing anything with Darkmoon Faire yet and they're just overcompensating so that we'll all assume Darkmoon Faire and Old Gods is the final Year of the Phoenix expansion and they can really hit us with a surprise. That'd be cool too.
What do you think? Is Darkmoon Faire the third expansion for this year?

I want to believe
looks like one of the file names is "stitches"
could a heroes of the storm character make his HS debut in Scholomance Acadamia ?
Some people think, that the Darkmoon-Faire-related hints might mean nothing at the end and that the third expansion would be focused on something else. I am not saying, that this won't be the case 100%, but in the past we also got some sneaky hints for the third expansion during a card reveal video:
Timestamp is 0:41.
There was also an article, that talked about a possible Deathwing-related expansion and even referenced Trump's video, but I couldn't find it. The closest I could found was Frosty's article:
https://outof.cards/hearthstone/151-expansion-speculation-where-are-we-heading-to
I dont remember that reaveal, but that was funny :)
I hope, that the 3rd expansion is some sort of darkmoon fairy with an evil twist. Not a pure "old gods" one a.k.a. "banging on the old glory, milking that cow yet again". And of course I am looking forward to the end of the year and the introduction of achievements in HS.
But for now, I just want to have a nice balanced /cough, cough expansion/meta with many fun combo and controlly decks. And also - an interesting new game mode.
So, this set comes from an alternate Azeroth but on Scholomance. We started in Outland with a brand new character who is a demon hunter, and Illadin. The final expansion this year of the Phoenix is so blatantly obvious it's the Dark Moon Faire. I wonder if they're all tied together by some over arching story? It doesn't seem to be so, and they're all stand alone cool ideas. This kinda feels like it takes far far into the future of WoW, like after Shadowlands and a long time period skip. With the Dark Moon Faire set, i'm predicting different versions of the Old Gods like EVIL N'Zoth (Repeat all Lackey effects you played this game targets chosen randomly.)
Hearthstone 'lore' is just stories told in the tavern, rather than there being an alternate Azeroth where it actually happens. This was demonstrated very clearly in comics leading up to the Kights of the Frozen Throne expansion: a bard tells a story about the 9 basic heroes becoming death knights, but it doesn't actually happen even in the HS universe.
Essentially HS storytelling is like real films/books/TV shows/etc. that are "based on real life events": it is dramatised however the author likes and only needs to keep a tenuous link to the actual events. Also, these stories can be extended (e.g. what was done in the Year of the Dragon), or completely disconnected, but either way it is a fiction within the Warcraft universe.
My head-canon for the Scholomance expansion has a member of the Cult of the Damned telling the story in a way that makes it sound a LOT nicer than it actually was.
That head-cannon is pretty interesting, and I guess you're right the lore of Hearthstone is drunks telling stories. I like that alot.
The third expansion is about the Lich King taking a vacation to the Darkmoon Faire and his experiences there.
Scholomance and Darkmoon Faire just fit in perfectly with the Year of the Phoenix to me.
1st expansion is Ashes of Outland. Ashes, Alar, plus "bringing back" Illidan are all very phoenix-y.
2nd expansion is Scholomance Academy. Extremely heavy magic themes, plus Kel'Thuzad's return, plus a school that descends into necromancy? Again, very phoenix-y.
3rd expansion? It would make sense for another "return from the dead" of the most infamous Gods (and famous Hearthstone cards) we've ever seen. It just fits right in with the theme. Plus it seems like what Hearthstone players have been wanting for years, just like Illidan and Dual-Class Cards.
Rise of Shadows: Rise like a *phoenix* perfect fit.
Saviors of Uldum: Features the reborn mechanic. Coincidence? I think not!
Descent of Dragons: An all out air battle over Northrend. And you know what else that flies and is associated with fire? That's right phoenixes!
Considering I never played WoW and know nothing about the lore, yeah, you sold me.
It seems that Kel'thuzad have little experience with necromancy, and is still one of the Kirin Tor Council of 6. But he's already conforming the Cult of the Damned, there are two directories of this.
Something that attracted my attention was "Nefarious" files (Nefarian another evil researcher anyone?), if you take this into account and includes the Old God's chats, looks like the mage is very busy with his research. Even one of the corrupt files, or scrolls, point to Stitches an abomination (S$%%tches.crpt, literally a crypt file), even knitting files added.
Much eggs on one basket, from a lore perspective, but I like it!
Edit: The mouse pointer is the same that undead race have on Warcraft 3
We just got news of Scholo... and now we are getting "leaked" info about the third expansion?!?!??!
When I read your post, I read it as "Schololooooo" :D (read it in Age of Empire Priest's voice!)
Yeah, all the Darkmoon Faire stuff popped out to me during the video. It wouldn't surprise me if they were trolling us, because they know how much of the community has been wanting that expansion. But honestly, I think it's time and we are finally going to see it this December.
I'll go with Darkmoon and Old Gods as my bet.
However, as much as I like Old Gods, N'zoth in particular, I am disturbed by the fact we've continuously received Faceless cards, nearly in ever expansion.
Faceless Corruptor, Convincing Infiltrator, Faceless Lackey, just to name a few.
Overpresence of Faceless cards spread through expansions makes the Old Gods theme less unique, much less than it should, in order to convey the proper amount of forbidden occultism.
Or you can look at it the other way, having Faceless appear in multiple expansions hint of some dark forces having their agents in multiple regions gathering their power and this is a long foreshadowing of something big to come! :)
That's a long stretch required on my side tho. :p
Would be really funny if it turns out that this is just Blizzard trolling us for a whole Year.
„LUL, gotcha! Anyway, here's TGT 2"
But, yeah, sounds cool if they tease the 3rd Xpac like that.
Alternatively... could Darkmoon Faire be connected to the upcoming new Game Mode in any Way?
