Hearthstone Game Designer, Matt London, was busy on Twitter over the weekend asking Hearthstone players about their favourite adventure content. Everyone had plenty of different opinions from all of Hearthstone's solo content but one that stood out, and prompted an additional, interesting question was Dungeon Run.
Dungeon Run was Hearthstone's first go at a roguelite game and was released on December 7, 2017 alongside the launch of Kobolds & Catacombs. The fresh mode spawned several iterations of the same product - Monster Hunt, Rumble Run, Dalaran Heist, and Tombs of Terror - but since 2019, we haven't seen new content in this realm.
Matt asked what the community thought about updating Dungeon Run with new cards, treasures, and bosses. Such an update would likely be trivial in the grand scheme of things and more importantly, would provide more value to the mode allowing players to have even more content to play in Hearthstone. This would also be a great opportunity to do a ton of achievements as well.
Keep in mind that nothing is set in stone. A developer asking for feedback on Twitter never guarantees that we'll see anything come to light in-game, but it certainly is nice to gain some insight into what they may be thinking about. These types of posts can help build more discussion within the community about what we all want to see Blizzard focusing on, so be sure to provide your feedback.
Quote From Matt London What is your favorite @PlayHearthstone Solo Adventure content? Why is it your favorite? *takes notes* (Source)
What do people think of this? Update Dungeon Run with new cards, treasures, bosses? (Source)
After a fascinating day of conversation about Hearthstone single player, I’ve concluded that everyone has a favorite adventure. I didn’t count, but Dungeon Run, Heist, and Puzzles seem like the Top 3. (Source)
What's your perspective on how storytelling can work in multiplayer content? Obviously single player is best suited for it, but I don't enjoy single player stuff. I'm sure it's more complicated but there's a lot of potential.
Long version: I love it. Huge potential, even beyond emergent narrative which has made past Blizzard games masterpieces. So much more to say about this.
Short version: We might be doing something in this realm this year. Small, experimental. Stay tuned. (Source)
Food for Thought
Respond with your answers to the following questions - more opinions are always great!
- What is your favourite adventure content?
- Why is that content your favourite?
- Dungeon Run: Would you like to see new bosses, treasures, and cards?

Heist was most fun with all those new heroes and variations (I would love to have chance to buy/earn some of Heist heroes as skins) but Dungeon Run is close second.
I would love new bosses and cards in those modes. Maybe not as change directly to those modes but as new Heist 2.0/Dungeon Run 2.0 so I would be able to choose if I play old or new version of those.
Personally, the kobolds dungeon run was my favorite single player content they released so definitely yes. The dalaran heist, tombs of terror and other variations had interesting gimmicks with the different hero powers but I don't remember them being as fun or replayable. As for the book of heroes content, I could care less about the campaigns gameplay-wise or lore-wise, I just finish them for the packs.
I hate it. Haven't even done the last ones, from Uldum onwards
The answer would have to be yes, only because the original dungeon run was poorly designed, with almost shit bosses at the start and absolutely crushing ones at the end. The number of times I've reached the last 2 bosses only to be stomped is near uncountable, and given that the rewards for finishing the run is only awarded once all 9 classes are done, that's pretty brutal.
But really, where's the merc game mode that was touted a few months ago? I rather be playing something fresh for a change to be honest.
Minor correction: Dungeon run was an rogue-like mode. Rogue-lites have an decreasing difficulty over time (mostly through permanent upgrades) while the difficulty from rogue-likes stays constant.
As for the questions
1. Dungeon run, followed by Tombs of Terror and Dalaran Heist
2. Mostly because of the difficulty. I remember actually being afraid of the final boss aswell as some normal enemies. That wasn't the case for me in the other modes, even in the heroic versions. That's also why Tombs of Terror is on my second place, but there it's purposly overdone and it doesn't have the same level of satisfaction when you know that you have to beat it eventually. The only exception is the plaquelord of Madness, god I love to fear him...
3. yes, just yes.
1. What is your favourite adventure content? Dungeon Run of course (Kobolds and Catacombs), although Dalaran Heist is a very close second
2. Why is that content your favourite? One word: Replayability. This is what really sets it apart for me escpecially compared to BoH which has zero replay value for me
3. Dungeon Run: Would you like to see new bosses, treasures, and cards? Yeah
Bottom line is that pretty much every previous solo content was better than the current BoH imho
I know this is out of context, but I'll still say this.
If you as Dev got the extra time to do something, then
- Fix Wild Mode!
- Promote your Duels Mode more!
- Create better rewards for Arena Run!
- Find a way to upgrade your system so it can support Tournament etc!
There's actually a ton of things to do than to worry about some adventures.
They already put enough effort into PvP content. And looking at last patch should tell you they aren't interested in mixing up the meta until new cards drop.
If it increases the difficulty of completing a run, fuck no I don't want any new changes to Dungeon run. Not before 2024, which I'm guessing is a safe bet for being done with my last class before then. I also don't know how many people would replay it and post what works for them.
Yes and it should count for daily quests and achievements. If there was ANY incentive to play single player adventures, i would play only adventures. Not even battlegrounds would grab my attention anymore.
Exactly. I have been saying this since Dungeon run came out: let us do daily quests there, that alone would up the popularity of this, or other PVE modes, a lot. But i guess it would also mean a drop in PVP play, which is what they dont want.
1. My favorite adventure content is the Dalaran Heist.
2. It's mainly because of the variability within the runs themselves i.e. modifiers depending on which part of the city you're attacking. My favorite of those is the Kirin Tor Citadel where you fight 12 bosses instead of the standard 8.
3. I don't want the "Classic" Dungeon Run changed at all, but rather introduce a new form of it. I created a concept a while back that kind of did this but it's also loaded with other stuff. Check it out if y'all want.
Agreed on all fronts. I could write an essay about why Dalaran Heist is the best version of the Dungeon Run formula. There's a degree of subjectivity on that when comparing to Monster Hunt, Rumble Run and Tombs of Terror - which all have their own unique mechanics - but it is objectively better than the OG Dungeon Run. That is not to say the OG version isn't great in its own right - it is! - but all of Dalaran Heist's additions were improvements (except the fact it cost money/gold to obtain most of it).
All of which makes me say no to simple additions of cards and bosses to Dungeon Run. I'd be very happy to see a version that gets continually updated though, it just needs to include the great features that were added since Dungeon Run. It seems a little silly to have to reinvent the wheel, so I'd want them to just extend Dalaran Heist and make that free/cheaper so everyone can join in.
Dungeon runs were indeed poggers. The encounters themselves were probably the best of all the roguelite modes, but i would like to see some of the improvements from the follow-up expacs. Especially Bob's Tavern for card removal.
There's probably a way to rebalance and repackage most of K&C, Witchwood, Rumble, Heist and Tombs into a single 'uuuuge pile of solo content, and update that ONE mode every year or so with new buckets from fresh sets. That would be incredible.
I love dungeon run and most of the solo content. You should be able to complete quests while doing them.
