Am I surprised that DH is being punished this mini-set with meh cards at best?
This is very disappointing, DH becomes one of the best class to draw your deck fast, but that deck is full of fluff.
Not enough aggression, not fast enough, class is dead until the next set.
Topple the Idol - Its not strictly bad but looking at fel dhunter's list (because its probably the only control archetype) there's really quite a lot of cheap cards, so this card can whiff and whiff hard if it does. Imagine paying 5 mana to deal 2 damage. Chaos nova may not be the best AoE out there, but at least its consistent. Not even the dredge keyword can save this one Im afraid.
Fossil Fanatic - Just a good draw option to have. That's it really. Something to play while drawing a card
Herald of Chaos - Powerful stuff. But perhaps more useful in tempo decks rather than outright fel dhunter. If naga dhunter makes a comeback, then this card might be in it. Just dont expect it to be in fel lists, because Eye Beam is likely the better option there.
The two Fel DH support cards might be useful.
Topple the Idol is actual garbage like holy shit, DH doesn't deserve something as trash as this. Even worse, this is presumably supposed to be Big Demon DH support but it's just unbearably awful.
The best thing you can do with it is hoping you find Faelin before playing it and that's really not something I look forward to. At least make it target only the enemy board, holy shit.
I think it's not such a bad card specifically for Big DH, since what you need there is finding your big cards and surviving until you have enough mana to play them, and this card does both of those things.
I don't think Big DH will be good though; it was way behind other decks in power level and this card doesn't look like it will be enough to change that.
Okay so just to put this into perspective.
Harpoon Gun is a very good card. Big Beast Hunter runs 6-8 Beasts. Very often your Harpoon Gun doesn't find a beast if you haven't set it up.
Big DH would likely be in a very similar spot because it can't reliably put their big stuff at the bottom and they can run like 10 cards with 5+ mana at max. That means there will be plenty of times where you play this and it just deals 1-2 damage and you lose the game because you just wasted a turn.
boardcelars that are this inconsistent have never seen play and will never see play. Dragon's Fury is the closest comparabale thing and that one has a way smaller margin for failure than this piece of shit.
You seem to be treating pulling anything below 5 as a death sentence. Yeah, 1 or 2 damage is pretty bad, but dealing 3 or 4 is perfectly reasonable when you're talking about a card with Dredge synergies and highroll potential. That's a Fire Sale or Chaos Nova that fixes your next draw.
I mean, the card doesn't amaze me or anything, but I think you're blowing it way out of proportion. It seems serviceable.
If 3-4 damage was okay then this is completely outclassed by Chaos Nova. Boardclears need to be reasonably consistent or else they will lose you the game when you most need them.
You never run a card that if it low rolls will basically lose you the game...at least not one where eeven the best case scenario is only decent.
The risk of not finding a big card is a good point; you would indeed need a pretty top-heavy deck to make it likely to hit a good card. On the other hand, the mulligan does help a bit in improving the ratio of expensive cards in the deck and a 4-damage AoE might still be good enough.
Perhaps a bigger problem is this costing 5 mana, which may not be fast enough. Meanwhile, Paladin has divine shields so it might not actually clear the board.
Kind of disappointed that Demon Hunter didn't get a Legendary card in this mini-set...
Too bad Topple the Idol probably has anti-synergy with Vanndar Stormpike :( At least if you pull him you'll still have a Chaos Nova, but after discounts the spell will be the lesser for it.
I just noticed this is the 4th Herald in the mini-set, and they're all Nagas. Wondering what they're heralding. HMMM...
"Herald, they're lesbians."
I do really like this cycle. It's like a reverse of the Dungeoneers from Wailing Caverns.
Heraldic can be fun...
