In today's Twitter Q&A with the Hearthstone team, Celestalon confirmed that the much anticipated "random/favourite hero skin" feature is arriving with Castle Nathria's patch, which should be coming out next week, ahead of the expansion launch on August 2.
It feels like since the dawn of time itself, or at least since Blizzard started adding in a million new hero skins, the community has been asking for the ability to have random hero skins assigned to their decks. The addition of the favourite hero skins functionality will come just a few months after Blizzard pushed the "favourite card back" functionality live, which we had previously datamined earlier this year.
Look at all those favourite card backs!
For those unaware, the favourite card back function allows you to favourite multiple card backs in your collection and they will appear, randomly, when you open packs and play games. Although not confirmed, we're certain the functionality will work the exact same as card backs:
- You can assign a Hero directly to a deck.
- If you don't assign a Hero, a random favourite Hero for that class will be picked.
- If only one Hero is favourited for a class, that Hero will always be displayed when playing games with that class, assuming you didn't assign a specific Hero to the deck.
Overall, more ways of customizing the Hearthstone experience is a great thing to see and can really break up the monotony that is hearing the same voicelines over and over again. Now if only Blizzard would add some more Mage heroes to the game...
Quote From Celestalon Any upcoming client features to tease?! Love some new features
Murder at Castle Nathria (24.0) will introduce Random/Favorite Hero Skins! Beyond that, the next couple months will be light on new client features.
We’re focused on some much larger features in the following couple of patches. Big things, but we’re not ready to talk about them quite yet! -Celestalon

Glad for this feature.
I love how the team is now putting efforts in making new skins but damn, I hate this FOMO that they do with those few skins in the store that we will never know if will or when will comeback.
Besides this, this feature is pretty neat.
I hope they allow more Heroes to be purchasable in the Hero Tab along side it, then. They said they were going to update it every once in awhile, but seems like it hasn't happened yet.
There was a moment (a week?) in the past 6 months when several heroes were available this way. I remember debating if I needed to spend gold on Alleria.
But there was nothing in the shop about it, and no "new thing" notification, so it would have been super easy to miss.
And did you? 😉
Seriously now, I don´t understand their logic behind puting few skins now and then to the shop for gold for a week or so and if you miss it, you won´t be able to purchace it again. Even more so where there is absolutely no notification that a new skin is available in the shop, only bundles for money. Why can´t they let older skins be available to buy with gold anytime, just like cardbacks, once they offered them for gold in shop?
I didn't (no disrespect intended, dear) because the only Hunter skin I will ever need is Sylvanas.
I'm fine with Blizzard making limited time offers, but a little notification is necessary. Stealth offers are zero fun, as well as bad for business.
It's simple, the reason for putting it on for a limited time is precisely to boost sales. At the time, when Alleria, Magni, and Medivh were "indefinitely", they only sold well when they were new the first month, but after that, sales plateaued, with hardly anyone buying them. But now, this way, putting them on for only two weeks, people buy them much more for fear of not seeing them again for a long time, than if they put them on for 3 months.
