Help me reach Legend!

Quick backstory:

I've been playing since Naxxramas, and used to reach Rank 3 before the ladder revamp. I've made it to Diamond 4 a couple times (where I am now). I'm feeling pretty good about my chances for a first time Legend this month. I got to Diamond mostly playing Ramp Paladin, then switched to this greedy control warlock and have been doing well and having fun. I teach high school, and have vacation coming up next week, so more time to grind. I would love some support from this awesome community.

I would love suggestions on the deck itself, if you have any to offer.

If anyone wants to add me in game and spectate, it could be fun and helpful. I'm currently Diamond 4 Standard.

I tend to beat aggro either by a landslide when I get my good early game stuff and draw lots of Soul Fragments, or by a super thin margin, which is very exciting. I hold up well against most control decks. Ramp Paladin with Alura on curve kills me every time, but what can you do.

  • Hey Pez, I´m just here wishing you luck! I´ve never reached Legend before aswell, my closest call was D1 3 stars - went all the way back to D4. Now I kinda lost motivation, this month I´m barely playing (Bronze 3 I think?). But seeing how close you are this early in month, I´m sure you can make it! I can´t give you advices but my fingers are crossed for you, keep us updated!

  • Hey, just chiming in to wish you the best of luck, and to offer some generic advice that has rung tru(est) for me. I've made legend in standard and wild a few times, and these are some of the things I found most helpful (which I had read many times from various sources before I got to legend the first time).

    1) I don't personally use a deck tracker, but it's good to be at least cognizant of your win rate with a deck over the medium to long term. It's good to know if something isn't working, but conversely, it's reassuring to know that a deck is inherently good enough to get to legend. It's been said many times that getting to legend is a grind (and it is, for many) but all you need is enough time invested with a deck that you can pilot with a 50%+ win rate. Knowing that you CAN get there with a given deck is important. Even without the aid of a deck tracker, it's good to keep a mental note of your win-rate.

    2) Play a deck you love. When I have made legend, I have known the deck(s) inside and out. Only after playing a ton with something do you learn a) how to mulligan, b) how to beat other decks with it, and c) what your outs are every turn. This leads into a related point:

    3) Generally don't switch up decks too much during the climb. Sticking with something reinforces the things you learn/improve upon in point #2.

    4) I personally don't get tilted (after all, it's just a game :) ), but lots of wise people suggest taking a break if you go on a losing streak or feel discouraged.

    5) (EDIT) I just thought of something else, which helps with point #4 a lot - understand that there are some things in Hearthstone that you can't control. Sometimes your opponent just draws the nuts (or you draw absolute garbage for 6 turns) or someone wins with the top-deck Fireball. Or something bonkers happens off a randomly generated card. Also, some matchups are just unfavorable and probably are lost before much play has occurred (not always the case). Don't be discouraged by things you can't control, just recognize it when it happens and don't let it contribute to frustration.

  • Good luck! Reaching legend is definitely a matter of time played, as long as you are fairly competent with your chosen deck.

    I've been playing a ton of my own build for Envoy Rustwix and love shuffling in multiple copies of random primes. Mine doesn't run either of the gods you have, but I find 1x Felosophy is enough since it requires one of only a few demons to be in hand. Maybe remove one in favor of Kanrethad Ebonlocke? An extra minion to fight aggro early with a tremendous benefit when you need the late game shenanigans. Having never played your version, I certainly could be missing the logic behind not playing him, though. 

    Full disclosure: I reached legend once and have never tried again. It's just not an enjoyable grind for me. 

  • I am confused? Why did you swap ramp pally, which is the best deck in the format for something as mediocre like control warlock? I am not surprised you fell down the ladder again. 

    You should consult vicious syndicate for the best deck in your ranking segment.

    Just play the most broken deck and try to optimize your decision making. This should take you to legend in no time.

      Ramp Pally is super good and super fun. I may switch back to it. Like I said above, I switched to warlock because I wanted to have fun with Rustwix, and that got me from Diamond 10 to 4, so it's definitely competitive.

      The one thing I absolutely don't want to do is try to get to Legend playing a deck I don't enjoy. I think Riffraff made a great point about that.

      It depends: if he is facing a lot of aggro decks then Warlock would be a better choice because Ramp Paladin gets absolutely bodied if it does not draw Allura otherwise. Also, enjoying the deck you are playing is probably the most important part! Why play a game if not to have fun?

       

      To OP: In terms of deck, you have a lot of Soul Fragment cards, I think Soulciologist would fit right in as a way to corrupt Tickatus and be a value/control tool. Also, there is a clear anti-synergy between Quests and Soul Fragments, so I wonder if that’s anything to consider. Anyway, I’m rooting for you to hit legend!

    Here is my answer:

    -Go to the tempostorm hearthstone website and check out the best decks. HSReplay is a good resource too (probably better but I am not premium member.)

    -Know your deck! I can play a tier 4 deck up to wild platinum in a given month

    (but if you want legend you will need a top deck. )

    - A deck tracker is a great resource if you are playing on a PC.

    Good Luck. I hit legend one time. Metas shift from time to time so you can kind of feel the meta if you play a bunch in a given day. I also find that the later in the day it gets the more difficult my opponents are.

  • Hi OP, 

    I agree with what people above me said. To add more - there are some shifts on a daily basis or on a certain ranks when you go up/fall down. That is why, in my experience, it is very good for your rank to just keep playing when you land in the area where you have good match ups and crazy win streaks. There is no rule to it, it just happens randomly. Sometimes it is one afternoon, sometimes it is just a few hours, but there will be favorbale windows for your deck and my advice is to use the maximum out of it when it comes. 

    Also, if you have already hit the high diamond league, all you need is time to get to legend. In the new system you are matched with the similar skill opponents so you do not get better opponents if you advance on ladders. (you may get more motivated ones, but it is nowhere near the old ladder system where ranks 3-leg were crazy competitive). 

    Hitting legend requires playing a lot of games, so better do it with the deck you enjoy :)

  • Well... Reaching Grinding to legend for the first time while also having a lot of fun surely is ambitious.

  • Just don't read Tempo Storm unless you want completely mislead yourself.

    And find a better deck. Slow Warlocks are very bad rn.

      Hope you are having a good day today.

      I wanted to ask you (or anybody else listening): Where do you find your information on the best decks out there?

      It's my understanding that HSReplay has the best information but you have to pay premium for the information. I rely on TempoStorm to provide me a temperature check about every two weeks... I play wild so for me, it works. Other websites like Hearthstone Top Decks are 4 months old (October 4th) (for wild.)

      Please let me know what you guys think. I love learning about new resources.

        Tempo Storm reports are not based on any stats / data, but on biased, snobbish, random opinions. And they don't get it right even by accident. For example, here's a hot take from the latest report - Ramp Paladin is tier 3 and loses to Warriors. The only thing worse are their deck lists full of bait cards and such... Wild TS reports are much more useful, of course only when compared to how notorious Standard TS reports are.

        HS Replays is completely useless if you don't have premium. And if you do, you need to know how to interpret all their raw data without falling into some traps.

        Vicious Syndicate is good, especially when the meta stabilizes. Their newest report is coming in less than an hour.

        I agree with the recommendation of Vicious Syndicate, the only problem is that sometimes the meta changes (for example after nerfs) and they take a few days to publish a report, they have good data and good analysts.

  • Last night, after tanking back to the rank floor once again, I switched back to Ramp Pally and went on a 6-game win streak. Several of you have noted the strengths of this deck over the control Warlock, and you were right. Plus the deck is really fun. I have to admit that a turn 4 Alura-coin-TiptheScales feels really unfair, but if it wins games, I'm doing it.

    Most of my matches yesterday were against Weapon Rogue and Gibberling Druid, and Ramp Pally does much better against both. Does anyone else think that Nitroboost Poison is problematic? At 1 mana, it's way too easy to corrupt and yields too much value combined with Self-Sharpening Sword.

      Definitely a good choice. The horde of primes from Envoy Rustwix shenanigans is tons of fun but there really aren't any great builds for it. Any deck doing that is at a disadvantage in the meta. If you enjoy playing a top tier deck, that's the best course of action. Get that card back and move on! 

       

  • Some general tips, besides the choice of decks that other have already noted:

    - Use a deck tracker. No reason not to, and it gives you a big advantage it also allows you to...

    - Review previous matches. Try to spot your own mistakes, both in games you won and games you lost. What choices could you have made differently? Learn from them.

    - Play focused. Don't alt tab between your game and something else, give it your full attention.

    - Take a break after losing 2 games in a row. You'll get tilted and make mistakes, causing you to get even more tilted and make even more mistakes. Giving yourself a 15 minute breather after losing 2 games in a row to walk around, grab something to drink, talk to your family, etc. will prevent you from getting trapped in the Tilt-Loss spiral.

    - Have fun! Hearthstone is a game, games are supposed to be fun.

      That's certainly true, but when you draw Alura with no Wandmakers and no coin, you feel bad. Vulpera is a flexible card that has a high chance of offering a 1-mana spell, given how many are in Paladin's arsenal, or something else useful that we can't run because of Alura/Scales combo. Plus, I keep dreaming one day she'll give me First Day of School on turn 3 for a turn 4 Alura.

  • Fine. Feels bad when you brick from time to time, but this deck highrolls very consistently and you don't even notice how many more times you feel good rather than bad.

  • I've noticed that after you've reached Legend for the first time, and it's no longer a big deal of "I must reach Legend!!!", it's much easier.  Sometimes I get Legend kind of accidentally where I wasn't really even trying (and I'm an OK player, maybe good but not great/ultra fantastic).

    I used to wish I could turn off rank display so I could just play without ladder anxiety or feel the need to play hard to climb.  Just play.

    I think many of us try too hard rather than simply playing, enjoying the game, trying to be a better player and let legend come naturally.

    If you are Diamond 5+ a few times, Legend is inevitable if you simply play a fair bit, enjoy the game and retain 95% focus.

     

  • Update: win streak today brought me right up to Diamond 1 full stars! One win away from Legend, I faced a Weapon Rogue and drew both Tip the Scales after mulligan, and very little useful early game stuff. Needless to say, I lost. Next match was Demon Hunter, and once again, bad draws did me in. Taking a break for now, but I WILL get there!

  • Another tough session this evening. Up and down rank 2, ending at rank 3 with 2 stars. Losing to secret mage and warlock (Tickatus and Zoo), beating paladin and druid pretty consistently. 50/50 against warriors. Killed one priest and one rogue. Haven't seen the other 3 classes in awhile.

  • It's not even half of the month and you're already standing at the Legend doorstep. I think you just have to do the usuals that you have to do, make sure you are in the best condition both body and mind when you climb.

    If you can top the snowball-throwing leaderboard (lol), then ofc you can reach Legend too.

          Diamond 8 still, yesterday I went 3-3, so I didn't win a single star :/

  • After hitting legend earlier today with a 7 game win streak, I continued later on with another 5 games in a row and nabbed the 12-wins-in-a-row achievement. I have to admit, Ramp Paladin is not only really strong but actually pretty easy to pilot. I've never used a deck tracker. The deck has 9 murlocs (no amalgams), so it isn't hard to use Alura and Tip the Scales for maximum value. I think the toughest decisions you have to make are whether or not to jam Nozdormu when you get him on curve. This requires anticipating your opponent's game plan, reading their hand, and evaluating your own. If your opponent could easily avoid killing your Redscale Dragontamer and chooses to kill it, watch out. They WANT you to play Nozdormu.

    I really appreciate all the support from folks here, it really motivated me to keep at it. For those of you who have never made it to legend and dream of doing so, you can do it! The advice on this thread here is solid. I think the most important thing is to choose a deck that is strong in the current meta AND you enjoy playing, and then make sure you're in the right frame of mind. It's a game, and should be fun!

    Now I'm curious if you'll do it again. For me, it was a one time thing I did with Bomb Hunter in 2019 in Standard and with Darkest Hour Warlock in Wild just two days before the deck got nerfed. I've come close again in Wild several times, but never reached legend again. I just don't like the grind and having to play completely optimized Tier 1 decks. But I still remember that awesome feeling of doing it for the first time :-)

      Probably just a one time thing for me. I only seriously pushed for legend once before (don't remember when exactly, probably around 2 or 3 years ago), and I got so stressed during each match it became less fun and I quit. This month it was consistently fun and challenging without being too stressful. I won't try it again unless I feel similarly favorable circumstances. It's a great achievement that I can claim now, so I don't feel much need to push again.

  • I reached Legend once. First I tried to stick to a deck that I liked and played a lot,  but you have to keep an eye on the meta. I ended up playing one of the strongest in the meta, but with something unique in it so I had an element of surprise. that worked well, but it took me ages, I played hours a day to reach it.

    Recently i got one win of Legend, 3 times in a row, with a face hunter. It seemed a bit luck based, I skyrocketed up with an 80% win rate, failed to reach legend and dropped right back to rank 3 after it.  the prob with the deck was that it relied on the opponent, some were free wins, others were impossible. So i'd stick with the above plan.

  • Congrats.  Now u can play a deck that is fun and that u like instead of the one that just wins.i still remembered the first time i reached legend was with pirate warrior and i was finally free from playing such a shitty deck.

    Thats the good thing about legend. No pressure for winning after u reach it
