Fairytale Brawl

Directeth thine actors, forsooth! Two Players!!

How it Works

  • Pick a hero to "play" during the brawl. They are a familiar hero dressed to impress in a Fairytale.
  • You don't control the player (AI) in this brawl but rather, you direct them.
    • Yes, this feels very weird at first!
    • You still get to control the Mulligan phase, so choose wisely!
    • The AI makes hilarious bad decisions at times, like attacking your own minions with spells when there is zero positive outcome. These actors really are something.
  • At the start of "your" turn, you will get to choose a director action.
    • This action is a 0 cost card that is immediately played.
    • To see the different actions, see "Director Action Cards" below.
  • After you make your action choice, the AI playing for you will play cards it desires.
  • May the best director win!

Fairytale Hero Choices

Here are your hero choices. Each hero has a different deck.

Robin Hood Rexxar

Beasts! Moonfang makes a legendary appearance in the brawl alongside Mankrik who is still looking for his wife. Cost reduction through Stage Right feels like a strong play, allowing your AI to hopefully spam out some of your beefier minions all in one go. A real dream would be to see a With Intensity dropped onto Moonfang though, the staying power would surely push games in your favor.

Red Riding Hood Jaina

Jaina's deck is Spell Mage! You'll start off with the Stormwind questline, Sorcerer's Gambit.

Stage Right can be an effective card to let your AI play more spells quickly, and both Plot: Evil Twins and Plot: Pirates!!! can help establish board presence which is lacking in a spell mage deck.

The biggest downside for directing your AI is that if you end up with Stage Left and With Intensity in your choices for the turn, they are both useless. Similarly, Action! feels like a card that doesn't get much use after the first couple of turns since you're likely to have a ton of cards in your hand after that point. This brawl is certainly one fun way to experiencing the archetype though!

Prince Charming Anduin

Anduin is rocking out with some great Control Priest.

Xyrella joins the fun alongside Condemn (Rank 1), and Hysteria. Discover also makes a core appearance with Palm Reading and Draconic Studies providing useful ways to to earn some solid cards and cost reductions for your deck that is heavy on spells or that fresh Dragon you just Discovered.

Frog Prince Thrall

Thrall's deck has Evolve, Battlecry, and Corrupt effects. Here are some cards you'll find:

Ultimately, we're hoping for a bit of luck here because Evolve mechanics can be crazy good but you've also got the chance for them to go horribly wrong. I've had more success so far with trying to bait out the Corrupt cards from the deck and relying on an early Action! to get some much-needed cards in hand. Stage Right is absolutely required for wins though against some of the other heroes who are just pumping out aggression.

Pirate King Garrosh

If you guess that the PIRATE KING, Garrosh, would be playing with Pirates, you'd be correct.

The Pirate synergy makes it quite obvious that Plot: Pirates!!! is an essential play when available and the board space is there. Starting off with Raid the Docks, which unfortunately is not completed automatically if you can play the aforementioned "Plot: Pirates!!!" card, is quite important to keep in your opening hand to increase the chance your AI will play it on the first turn - you'd be surprised.

Getting the weapon from your first quest early can be quite important because being a deck with Pirates, you've also got weapon synergies. Defias Cannoneer, a new card in the Deadmines mini-set, stands to help clear out boards efficiently, paving way for face action should your AI choose it. Fogsail Freebooter can also be a source of control early on, though the AI might just hit you in the face with it anyway so who knows?

The brawl can be quite a bit of fun even if the AI doesn't make the best plays. It's like all the Esports events where you get an opportunity to scream "BUT YOU HAVE LETHAL" at your monitor as you become quickly disappointed when they hit themselves in the face instead. Very neat change in pace for a Tavern Brawl from Blizzard.

Actually the worst Brawl ever created. Who the fuck thought it would be fun to watch mentally challenged bots fail to find lethal and bug out every other turn?

Kings ransom on a full board does nothing so don't try it

This AI is eye wateringly bad. Except the opponent, that one can find lethal again and again.

    Quote From Gadgetzan Gazette
Calling this play a comedy of errors would be generous. The directors tried in vain to get these actors to act out anything with a vague resemblance to a plot.

Rexxar finally gave me my pack by smorcing after the +5/+5 buffs landed on a Wolpertinger and Trampling Rhino.

Why does does the Warrior AI completely ignore the quest in its hand if it can play something else?...

Same here, played Garrosh 3 times, and AI never played quest on turn 1.

I just picked warrior and summoned pirates and AI Jaina couldn't do a thing. Easy peasy (bad brawl, but what else to expect from Blizzard?)

I get the idea and with a capable AI it could be fun for a couple of games. The problem is that the AI is so bad that this whole brawl seems more like a liability than a fun experience. Not a good one Blizz.

Edit: After having to endure this a couple of times I must say this is the single worst brawl in HS history. AI making bad plays all the time, missing lethal and winning is just luck. I mean I just survived on one health for five or six turn against Jaina with the AI not even bothering to HP me or go face once. Eventually I died from fatigue. That is just beyond bad.

This hurt to play. missed lethal 2 games in a row only to lose. took 4 times "playing" this brawl to get through it.

Playing as Shaman... watching it play a handbuffed minion and then Revolving it... sadness and pain.

Played Warrior, AI wouldn't play the Questline until like turn 5 :( And Anduin kept using the "summon copies of your opponent's minions" option to refill the board after I did. Really annoying.

Won anyway, 'cause AI-Anduin kept using his Hero Power on me, but still: this Brawl is cute in theory, obnoxious in practice.

Pretty nice to have a new brawl finally.

Do not pick Jaina.   The AI is so bad it cannot recognize lethal with the spells in hand.

I concur, don't pick Jaina. I mean it. Her AI is an absolute desaster. My game went into fatigue despite my opponent having a full board and me being on one health for five or six turns. I would say that Rexxar and Garrosh are the least bad ones as their decks are rather minion based.

Anduin loves to heal the opponent. *BREAKS KEYBOARD*

When my Anduin healed the opponent, the opponent was already at full health, so I thought it was a nice touch of realism. But judging from these reactions he also does it when the opponent is not at full health?

And he just might buff one of his opponent's minions with a Elekk or two.

I love Tavern Brawls, and I know they use Tavern Brawls for testing, but I'm struggling to see what is being tested here.

How far we're willing to go for a pack?

Honestly though, I think the idea is kinda cute, but it needs much better AI to actually be enjoyable.

IMO, this is one of the worst brawls ever. My hero just spent 2 out of 8 mana healing my opponent’s face and ended the turn.
