Pretty glad Secret mage is weak in standard coz this legendary looks quite annoying to deal with.
Feeling sorry for all wild players though. RIP
Usually I don't wish for a Silence when playing against mage.
It will cast any mage secret, not just one from the deck, yes?
iksar is one of like 5 human beings on planet earth that actually wants secret mage to be viable so hes just gonna keep pushing secret mage cards into standard that never see any play in the format but become the most annoying shit on planet earth in wild e.g. arcane flakmage
I think the card is cool and it's a decent enough effect, but at least in Standard, are we really ever going to be running enough secrets in our Mage decks for this one to pan out? I'm doubtful of it, personally.
No no no no no not again... please stop with secret maaaage :((((
Ow, it's combination of Shadowjeweler Hanar combined with Crossroads Gossiper. Who wants to be Counterspelled 5 times in a row?
It specifies the Secret has to be "different", so that thankfully cannot happen.
Good? Not sure. Annoying? Most definitely, not looking forward to facing this one...
This expansion has a lot of legendaries that feel like epic cards.
This expansion has a lot of sane and balanced cards. I like it.
We have been forcefed broken and oppressive card for so long that we forgot what normal feels like.
It's just my personal opinion of course... I realize munchkin and netdecker alike will simply ignore most of this expansion content and continue to play their tiered archetype.
*scottish accent* Damned gamer, they've ruined the game. >:-(
This might be pretty grody in Wild. It's no fuss for a Mage to splurge out 2-3 secrets early on. If even one stays up by turn 4 it's bad news when this hits the board.
Its Crossroads Gossiper, except more dangerous and cost 1 more.
But in a class like mage, where secrets haven't been relevant for some time, would it be the clincher for aggro mage to shine? Technically it can happen, because Explosive Runes is in standard, but without any further support this card would likely be unplayed until more arrives.
It really does look like a rogue legendary to be honest, and ironically would have been the card that actually pushes secret rogue up a tier. Is this really just team5 shitting on rogue card design, because it seems like for every archetype they're pushing the best cards for that archetype always seem to land into another class.
I think Orion's design would be too passive for rogue. One way or another, rogue is always about precise, controlled shenanigans, and Orion just kinda sits there and does his thing largely out of the control of his owner. He might well be better than Halkias, but I don't view it as a rogue card handed to mage because rogue wouldn't be given such a card to begin with.
I would agree that cards are largely designed to fit with the 'identity' of the class; hence why mage cards always find a way to piss me off. But I would disagree with precise, controlled shenanigans. Most of the time rogue cards have elements of rng, cards from other classes, scaling effects with number of cards played, or does shuffling/drawing/copying.
But there are also cards like Infiltrator Lilian, Crabatoa, etc. singular legendaries that just do what they do, as mundane as it is effective.
Point is, just because the class has an identity, doesn't mean you can't have solid stuff like orion. And if its player agency you're asking for they could easily have designed it with a combo to discover and play a secret. Besides, this card doesn't really strike me as something you design for mage neither; feels more like something for paladin.
Rogue's RNG is nearly always in-hand generation, meaning what you actually do with it is still controlled by the rogue. Infiltrator Lilian is a rare exception necessitated by her being able to attack on the opponent's turn, while Tess... OK, Tess does stretch it. But that's very rare.
I completely agree that it looks more like a paladin card than mage, though. Perhaps it was initially, but the nature of pally secrets usually making minions more sticky meant it was just too dangerous/frustrating there. Besides, mage having a growing minion is unusual, but the straight-to-board random spellcasting is very on-brand for the class.
In any case, I would be more reluctant to put cards like Orion in rogue than any other (secret) class precisely because of what rogue theme and gameplay is built upon. In fact, despite being a rogue main I'd have little interest in making a secret deck if rogue got Orion instead of Halkias because it wouldn't have any shenanigans I could control. It would just be playing good cards and hoping they work out. That's fine for many players and anyone only interested in winning, but it's not why rogue mains become rogue mains. So it's important the devs splash some class identity into decks, else why not put them in another class?
I totally wasn't expecting secret mage support for this expansion.
Wow, I wish this was the rogue legendary. That's really good.
I'm not so convinced. Most of the time you can just kill Orion before triggering a secret. There are mage secrets that would trigger first in most situations (e.g. Counterspell if the opponent doesn't have minions to do the job, or Oasis Ally if they do), but actually having the right one at the right time is not simple. In Wild it's probably a different story, but I refuse to touch secret mage there.
Halkias has his own awkwardness, but I much prefer him. If nothing else you can be more active in triggering and multiplying him, which is much more fun imo.
Secret mage in wild has been bad for over a year already, it is too slow, and this card won't help it all that much
