The duplicate protection against Legendary cards that we've enjoyed so much in Hearthstone since its arrival back in 2017 has been extended to Epics, Rares, and Commons!
This is the single largest economy update Hearthstone has had in the entire history of the game. No more cursing at your card packs when you open up that same epic 5 times during the opening of your pre-order bundles. This also means that Hearthstone has become much cheaper to get into on the lower-end of things because your money will consistently go into new cards!
Here is how it works:
- When you open a card pack, if you already own 2 of a particular Common, Rare, or Epic card, that card cannot appear in the pack.
- As soon as you have opened all the cards from a certain rarity, you will begin to receive duplicates again.
Keep in mind that cards and their golden variants are considered the same, exactly how this worked with Legendary cards, so don't expect to open a golden version of a card if you've already opened the maximum playable copies of that card - that is until you've opened all the cards from that card's rarity.
What do you think of the changes to rarity drop protection?

Holy moly this is the best thing I have ever read about Hearthstone. That's what I think about it. :D
Is this live already?
Nope. I don't know when, but the roadmap of the year of the phoenix says "duplicate protection" and it's after some events that aren't in the game yet. So safe your packs and be patient. :)
This must be the best news of all, amazing, really.
This is HUGE finally not 40 dust packs until I have all rares of an expansion.. so many duplicate rares and epics.. FINALLY.. I have some CLASSIC epics I still don't have and I have opened more than 1K classic packs by now (I think.. been playing tavern brawl weekly since it's release missed maybe 2)
BTW do NOT open any pack until the update is live.
This is good news. This even works well with when they nerf cards. You will get the nerfed cards over and over again during the entire full value redemption period
Great news!
I'm not sure if this would slow you down a little bit at first for getting epics and legendaries. If you get any duplicate commons or rares, you can save the dust you get towards crafting an epic or legendary you want, but after this goes live you can only do that with a common or rare you don't want, until you have them all.
Or perhaps duplicate protection on epics makes up for it.
I was hoping for them to do this for epics, but having it for all rarities is even better, especially for new players.
IMO this is the most significant news item of the release.
Give or take it will take
This is huge! The game could really use some economy updates. They could have done gold quantity, dust quantity, pack quantity, but I think pack quality is probably the best approach.
Incredible.
Finally! I get to actually craft epics day 1 without having this duplicate issue hanging over me.
No more 4x Chromatic Eggs
No more 4x Ramming Speed
I feel you!
Blizzard still ignoring my nerf Ramming Speed campaign (not that I have 5 copies of it or anything, err ok I do).
You and me both. One day, one day...
That's a huge Change!
This, and the Pity-Timer, pretty much guarantee that you'll have a full Collection after getting a certain Amount of Packs. You still need to get a lot of them, but at least we can be sure now that there's a Cap!
Can someone smarter than I work out how many packs are needed for a new set under these new rules
This has huge implications for whenever a card is nerfed. Say that a certain rare is nerfed and you have all the other rares from that set, you can just disenchant it for the full dust value and get it from a pack again and again.
Not clear but they may have addressed this loophole:
My guess is that Blizzard would implement in such a way that you could only get the disenchanted card again through the usual RNG.
