Yet another first time F2P legend

Dreamed of making this thread, but after 4 years of playing didn't think it would ever happen.  It's a bit self congratulatory but I hope this one time that's ok.

Was rank 13 wild starting last season and managed to get to Rank 1 for the first time ever.

This month I decided it was time to properly try - I'd just play up to 10 games each night until the season was over or I hit legend for the first time, and earn that card back (which I won't use because I don't actually like it lol).

I used my version of Dragon Jade Druid which I really like.  My 4 year old Druid isn't even level 60 so it's fair to say I'm not an expert Druid player:)

Had 82% winrate - 27-6

Even better Rank 1 final boss emoted Well Played so I added him (I give kudos to anyone who emotes WP on a loss) and we had a great chat after.  Explained first time legend situation and he was really kind and we kinda of shared it together :P  Props to him.

Anyway, rambled enough so just to say if you are trying to do the same, there's lots of advice out there.  But you can do it if you play, practice and a bit of good RNG helps too :)

      I am usually a renolock wild player at around 15-10, but when I read your post I got reminded of my time starting hearthstone when I was mainly a druid player (my first goal in hearhtstone was a golden malfurion). After reading your post I picked up a dragon druid list and modified it too ad some cards of my own liking trying to see if I could hit legend (My highest rank ever has been 6).

       

      First of all it really sparked back some love for the game playing my old favorite hero again which for that alone thank you. I had a load of fun playing druid, the higher I got the more I also started winning matchups I was previously losing (Quest mage especially started as an instant loss but the last few days I managed to get an 75% winrate against that deck). But besides all that, after 2 weeks of grinding I managed to hit legend with my own build of dragon druid. This felled unbelievable to me, I never thought I would hit legend but your post made me feel like it was believable and I just went for it. 

       

      When I started this game I promised myself one thing, if I ever hit legend I will craft my first legend deck fully golden, and thanks to the hall of fame rotation dust, I now have a fully golden dragon druid deck that I will always keep as a memory of my first time legend. 

       

      Bit of a long story, but this is my way of telling you what this meant for me. Thank you!

      Sure mate - there's a more standard list that runs the ritualist instead of Hecklebots and Aya instead of a Spellkin.  That might be better for this works for me.

  • Big CG man! I bet that felt awesome! It is funny how when you make legend, you're first a pretty high rank cause most Legend players already doing goofy stuff so they deranked heavilly :D

      Actually I looked me up on the Blizzard ladder web page, and there were only 125 players in EU Wild Legend at the time, so yes I AM TOP #100 LEGEND!!!!!! Wow!    Oh, but there's only 125 people and some of them are probably playing meme decks for fun.   Ah :(

        I hit Legend for the first time in January... and then again in February. TBH, I was kind of disappointed because of the second time in a consecutive month. :-/

        Btw I heard that it's much easier to hit legend in Wild (where I did myself also).

          Thanks mate (and everyone else I've not specifically thanked)!  Feels good and wanted to mark the occasion so I can come back and read this post some point in the future to relive the feeling.

          Emailled my gf at 5 in the morning with the screenshot - she was asleep upstairs and this morning said "you should have come and woken me up!".  Yeah I don't think that would have gone well for me :P :P

          Could be easier in Wild maybe - hit Rank 2 a few times in standard but I wasn't trying then and even though I had half the month left played on different accounts/formats.

          Am f2p and playing in Wild at least means I don't lose half my collection each year and crafting investments more  worthwhile (usually). When standard gets boring play Wild, tired of Wild play standard!

      Where are you now

      • Right now I'm at rank 11 in both wild and standard.  This is usually my ceiling but occasionally I've moved into the rank 6 to 10 bracket.  Lately I've been playing secret mage in wild and face hunter in standard since the decks are pretty inexpensive.

          Have you got the full basic set? If not, I found playing Arena a great way to learn and build my collection up. Although they say "7 wins is infinite", I believe that 3 wins is good value. So, if you can go 3-3 in arena, spend your gold on arena instead of packs.

          Don't disenchant anything, unless you really want to build a deck immediately. Not even extra cards. Wait for nerfs/upgrades and disenchant at full cost. I've been doing that with the the recent Shaman nerfs - eg: I had 6 Invocation of Frost. Small change to some, but makes the difference for me. Been playing casually for 1 year and am at rank 4 with a tier 1 deck. But, I only play 5 or 6 hours a week.

    Once again, I added my final boss after the game and, once again, turns out they were really nice and we shared in the moment :)

    Sure there are the odd unpleasant individual, but I think most are good to have in your friends list :)

      I'm Diamond already, I think this month I'm in the right track! I'm not completely F2P tho, I usually spend 20 € per expansion and I purchase some bundles with good value. It would be a feat for me anyway!

        Well I don't want to imply that f2p is better than someone who spends lots or vice versa - people should spend €0 - €1000+ as long as it's the right amount for them!

        Diamond is great!  You can do it my friend and there's half the season left!  And even if not, just getting to Diamond should net you nice star bonus for next season :) :)

      I used to think that too - but at least now it's worth doing once if only for the free legendary.

      But really, as long as you are enjoying the game, it doesn't really matter if you are Bronze 10.

       

  • Also just made legend on EU with Disco Lock list above - definitely doable in the right meta with the right RNG.

    WARNING:  DO NOT PLAY IF GET EASILY TILTED AND YOUR COMPUTER NEAR HIGH STORY WINDOW

      I just called it that because it's what it's called in my HS client deck list and I liked it better than Discard.

      OR you could say because it has Malchezaar's Imp and Silverware Golem in which are One night in Karazhan cards which is kinda Disco themed :P

      To be honest, when I made this thread I was keen to join the trend of making first time legend posts (which I think are awesome) and also document it for me to look back on as it's been so long to get here and I was soooooo pleased!  

      But something that suprised me was how great some of these replies have been.  Not only the generous congrats from people, but even more those who seem to use it for inspiration.  I hope if this is a goal you want to achieve it gives you the motivation and belief to go and attempt it.

      For some Legend is commonplace and they've been doing it every month for years.  Others did it once and now are happy to relax.  Some are happy just to get Plat, Gold or Silver rank, Arena, Battlegrounds or simply have fun and work on their collection.  Whatever works for you is good!

      I'm trying for legend on Asia now.  Would be great if I can do it this season and achieve triple legend in a season (i.e. on all regions except China).  But if not, it will be my target next month to at least get my free legendary over there.

  • OK, last time I intend to bore everyone about me getting legend for first time.

    Within last 10 minutes, managed to get Legend on Asia for first time, and complete Triple Legend in same season goal.

    FYI it was Discard Lock (though slightly different list from before), with a few even shaman games.

    This time didn't get to speak to my opponent afterward as they didn't accept but as their name implied we spoke different languages that was to be expected.

    What legendaries did I get for the 3 accounts?  Pretty awesome:

    - The Beast  (EU)

    - Onyxia   (NA)

    - The Beast   (Asia)

    Just what my f2p accounts needed!

     

    Thanks again for all the kind words - and if someone as average as me can get triple legend in the same season, if you still not got legend believe you can if you decide it's something you want :)  Averaged 95 mins or so a day to get there the 3 times and there's still 2 weeks of season left and I was playing Tier 2 and Tier 3 decks :P

    But whatever your goals are - have fun and stay safe my friends :) :)

    Wonder if I can justify a bottle of wine tonight now.....

  • Discard warlock? Interesting same here but still not legend. I guess its a process a bit longer than the breeze that is reaching rank 5 diamond with almost no losses.

    Question would u say odd demon hunter is the worst match up unless u get the nuts discard order? Of course theres reno priest but the version that only relies on board clears on turn 5 is quite easy imo

    • Yes it's the worst matchup.  The version with lots of 1 drops is worse for us than the slower odd list.

      Some lists put in a few tech cards such as  Wrathguard, Vulgar Homunculus or even Defile to help.

      I'd much rather face reno priest with disco lock than Odd DH.  

      I went:

      16 - 7 vs Reno Priest

      22 - 27 vs Odd DH  (my worst matchup)

      though many of those Odd DH games I was still learning the deck.

    I never, NEVER wanted to grind for Legend, because I always found it extremely stressful: I always limited myself to r5 and then play my own homebrews.

    But with the new system, I must say I felt more lured to it, because there were less stars between D5 and L.

    And I actually succeded today without even too much of a grind! Legend for the first time!

    I used a Wild Discolock with Freeze package (which worked wonders against DH, PW and mirror). Rank 29xx (can't remember).

    I am quite happy with the achievement. Although now I'm not sure it was so much of an achievement tbh, it didn't feel that hard. And I'm not even sure I want to play meta decks for grinds to Diamond ever again?

    But well, cheers to me for today!
