Wild

Playing Wild

I've read and heard some people say they hate wild and some love it.   Where do you stand on it?

I recently just started playing Wild almost exclusively.  I got tired of seeing the same decks over and over again in standard and I was struggling to rank up so I figured I would play Wild and at least see some different decks and cards for a while.  I didn't start playing Hearthstone until around the time Knights Of The Frozen Throne was released so I missed everything that came before it.  After I got my golden Rogue hero I decided to try and get the golden Shaman which I am about 50 wins away.   I even bought and played through all the Adventures that were released so I could have access to some older cards without having to spend all my dust (which I ended up doing anyways lol). 

I'm still enjoying playing wild more than standard but i'm afraid of getting burned out again because its still a lot of the same decks which is mostly resurrect Priest  (which is just BS but i'll save that for the salt thread).   I've read and heard some people say they hate wild and some love it so i'm curious to hear this communities opinion.  Do you like it?  Hate it?  What would you change?  I don't think we should be allowed to use cards from current expansions.  It should only be cards that have rotated out.  That way there is a bigger difference between standard and wild.

  • I love it, but get annoyed when I queue into decks that are simply Standard decks with no Wild-exclusive cards.  I'm playing Wild for a different experience.  

  • I like it when I don't face big priest. That's about it, really. Nice change of pace from standard as that usually gets boring after a month or so with no changes.

  • I love Wild because I love freedom. Thus, I can create whatever deck I want.

  • The only class that has just almost one archetype is Priest, with Big. All the others have at last 2-3 different decks placed in Tier 1 and 2 (plus a tons of others) that cover very different types. Considering how Standard has always been pretty stale, with only 2-4 top deck around, I've move into Wild years ago and never regreted it.

    Don't listen to those who claims that Wild is full of OPness and the like: as you opponent can do crazy stuffs, than so you can. You have su many good counterplay to even the most powerfull play that almost every match can be turned around with a bit of luck and some thinking.

    Also, with the passing of time, Wild can only grow better and better.

      This is false. The only tier 1-2 deck paladin has is odd paladin. The only tier 1-2 deck Rogue has is odd rogue. The only tier 1-2 deck Hunter has is mech hunter. 

      Meanwhile, priest has big priest, dragon inner fire priest and, arguably, mind blast priest which are all tier 1-2. You just don't see the latter two much because of, well, big priest.

  • There are a lot of misconceptions regarding Wild, spread by fainthearted people or those who don't play the mode. The first false one: Wild is "tough", "unfair" and "strong", Standard isn't, therefore Standard is better. Nope. They are the same, as HS ever was; or - more then often Wild is more appealing game mode, because it's less restrictive, while one average card like Dr. Boom can easily paralyze Standard meta. Big Priest is the only annoying deck, while we can remember how oppressive and unfair prenerf Cube Warlock, Quest Rogue and Rush DK Rexxar were (which are never mentioned in antiWild discussions). So: Wild is shit, therefore Standard is good, that's a false argument. ...Wild is tough? It is and that's good. Everything is strong there and toughness is high only from the Standard point of view. "Tough" means a lot of fun shenanigans in contrast to vanilla plays. Opponent play strong deck, you play strong deck - what's the problem? Another false argument: Wild isn't versatile (and Standard is, haha). There are numerous fun cards and valid decks in Wild. Like 10 top meta, 20 meta and 30 off meta... Countless of memes. And people do play various decks. My last 15 matches: only one vs. Big Priest. Rank 4. Ranks 15-10-5 are the most versatile. Meta decks are beatable and it's possible to climb without meta decks. Those surprise. ...Wild plays are wild. No, smart plays (macro and micro) are rewarded. If you don't play really shitty decks, you'll have answer vs. many plays. Sometimes you don't, then concede and move on...

    I play both, Standard and Wild (casual and ranked). I play it for fun, fun combos, interesting cards and possibilities. Important is to change decks very often. ...Wild isn't a boogeyman. My winrate vs. Big Priest is like 75%. Some decks just shit on it.

    The best move you did is buying adventures. A lot of legendaries are staples. I crafted only 2 more preMammoth legendaries since I started playing WIld in November (tells I didn't get burned): Aya and Patches. Many cards are staples in various decks, you don't need to get all rotated cards.

  • As long as I don't face Big Priest, Mill Rogue and similar brain-dead oppressive bullshit, I really do love Wild (I play Wild almost exclusively anyway). There are decks that I find annoying, but don't mind playing against because they're fair IMO. Still, the main reason I love Wild is because you can easily climb with off meta decks, as long as you know your match ups.

  • Wild is great up until rank 5, then it’s just quest mages, odd paladins and big priests

  • I go back and forth on wild. Ultimately, I love playing cards like DK Rex, N'Zoth, Syl, and (ofc) Kel'Thuzad so I always come back to it. Love/Hate... so I love/hate wild. :D

  • Wild is my fav. I play both wild and standard, but wild is WILD. hence the name. Dont complain! (Big priest get me mad too). Its called wild for a reason.

    Regarding your first two sentences - it's just what Tuscarora87 said, there is a big misconception of what wild is. It depends on where you are looking at. If you are looking only at the decks you despised in the past or at busted synergies, which your opponents can pull off early on, it's not a surprise, that some people disrespect it.

    I personally like it due to various reasons - it offers more variety in terms of play-styles and archtypes (this will be even more obvious, after Vanish and Mind Blast get HoF and we start to see only two-dimensional builds popping up for rogue), it features more cards (which offer greater freedom regarding deck-building), it is the cheapest format in the long term (the longer you stay in the game, the bigger your collection will be and at one point it will greately exceed the cards you are missing in both formats) and it offers more meme opportunities. I must mention the undeniable fact, that wild has its own problems like enabling busted combos, which may hinder a lot of decks from seeing competitive play and feel too oppressive - e.g. pre-nerfed Reno Priest, Giantlock, AK74 Druid, pre-nerfed Kingsbane Mill Rogue and now the infamous Big Priest and Darkest Hour. And people would want to avoid them, especially if they played against them in standard and were left with a bad taste in their mouths (like the case with Big Priest in KoFT and K&C, which devolved into Resurrect Combo Priest in RR). Though tbh standard has its own problems too and due to the small amount of cards there some cards like Dr. Boom, Mad Genius would feel oppressive as well, because not every class can answer them properly. The power-level there is distributed poorly, which is another reason why some people prefer to enter the eternal format.

    As you can see, everything depends on where you are looking at. If you are afraid of getting burnt-out someday, that's ok, because it happens to all of us, and you could do something different in that case. I moved to wild back in RR, because I found the standard meta to be dull and I hated facing all of the popular combo decks back then. I decided to make a ladder-worthy Thief Priest list, which would counter most of the meta decks, and not only did I have fun, but I also reached legend twice. If you feel burnt-out some day, you can always change your deck-list (try out a different play-style or something completely casual), the mode (arena, solo adventures) or the game itself. Right now I am playing Heroes 3 HotA alongside hs and once my vacation starts, I'm planning on returning to Wotlk and play my beloved Kitty Druid.

  • I am a Wild main, and i like it because i have more freedom about deckbuilding, and i don't want my preciously crafted cards to become worthless.

    Yet i hate stupidly broken interactions, such as those provided by Big Priest, but also Bloodbloom.

    Those interactions are inherently flawed, but become clearly broken only later on, typically when already rotated into Wild. But the flaw is there since the release, when the card is Standard.

    So i don't even hate the broken part of Wild, i hate the flawed design policy adopted in this game since forever, and never acknowledged as dangerous, simply because they don't care of Wild.

    As if a card like Darkest Hour could ever become playable, without providing broken value...

    Wild players like power, but not brokenness.

  • I just started playing Wild, and it's been fun so far. A trip down memory lane where I get to reconnect with some of my preciously crafted cards. So far, I haven't faced any of the oppressive decks yet at the lower ranks (Big Priests, Jade Druids, etc.), so I've been stampeding through with a Secret Paladin deck (a tweaked version of the featured deck on the front page, I added Corpsetakers and Call to Arms). 

    Maybe in a month's time I'll be back here whining about Big Priests, but until then, I'm enjoying the climb.
