A game update is now live and that means duplicate protection is here! Get cracking open those packs!
Please Note: You must patch before this is active - be safe! Mobile, updates always lag behind desktop.
Originally announced when Ashes of Outland and Year of the Phoenix were announced (see our huge recap), it is now no longer possible to receive duplicates of any card until you have collected all the cards of a particular rarity in a set. Here's how it works:
- Previously, only Legendary cards received duplicate protection.
- Now, Legendary, Epic, Rare, and Common cards are protected.
- This applies to every expansion that has ever come out.
There is an extra level of detail here now though to prevent abuse of the system. Cards now get marked as collected as you receive them even if you disenchant them. This would curb abuse should a card be nerfed so you can't just keep opening packs to get plenty of dust. It also prevents you from targeting certain golden cards, as was possible with legendaries in the past (though really, the chances were so low it didn't matter). Here's an example of how that works.
- I open an Ashes of Outland card pack.
- I receive an Enhanced Dreadlord, it is marked as collected internally.
- I decide to Disenchant the Dreadlord. My collected count for this card remains at 1.
- I open another Enhanced Dreadlord. I've now collected 2 in my lifetime.
- I disenchant Enhanced Dreadlord. I cannot open this card again in a pack until I have collected 2 of every Ashes of Outland rare.
It will be a bit weird at first to not see duplicates, but this is a fantastic change since it allows players to collect Common and Rare cards quicker from sets, lowering the cost of entry to a new set. If you want a full set of Epics of Legendaries, that'll still require quite a few card packs, though we won't be opened 4 of the same Epic anymore which is going to feel amazing.
One nice benefit of the "collected" tracking is that you can safely disenchant a card at any point in time and you won't have to see it again until you've collected the full set of cards of a particular rarity in a given expansion.
Quote From Blizzard A few years back, we made changes to how opening card packs works to ensure that every time you got a Legendary card, it would be one that you didn’t already have. Starting March 26, we’re extending this to cards of all rarities!
Once this change goes live, you will no longer receive more than two copies of any Common, Rare, or Epic until you have owned two copies of all cards of that rarity in a set. Crafting a card counts towards acquiring it, and any cards you acquire and later disenchant (whether golden or non-golden) count as well. This means that if you get a card that you don’t want, you can disenchant it and you will not receive it again until you have all cards of that rarity from that set. This change does not affect the overall distribution of rarities in card packs.

Guys I need some help:
Just got back into HS after quite a long brake, I totally missed the Dragon expansion; I've only opened a pack to get the free Legendaries.
I got a loooot of dust from prev expansions, so I was wondering something, considering this new system:
If I were to craft all commons and rare cards of a set, so I would craft only 1 copy for each card; then proceeded to open packs from that expansion, would I be getting only epics and legendaries? Cause I really didn't understand how this system works with the scenario that I described.
Thanks
"This means that if you get a card that you don’t want, you can disenchant it and you will not receive it again until you have all cards of that rarity from that set."
This seems to not be working. I had all the common cards from classic set, I disenchanded one, and didn't receive it in the next pack. It seems as though if you disenchant something, you will not get it again even if you collect all other cards from the set :/
Your common card is still marked as collected, so you have the same chance of getting it as any other common. If you had never opened your last common, you would get the last common, and probably 3 others you already have.
Sure, it works as you described. I'm just pointing out that one could understand from the text, that you would receive the DE copies immediately after he owns all other cards from that rarity and opens a new pack :)
Sir..
I open pack recently and instill get duplicate..
Im done patching before and get notification about duplicate protection T_T
If I disenchant some classic legendaries I've had since a few months (before this update), would I be able to open them again? Or are they counted as "acquired" by the system?
Are the new priest cards not duplicate protected? They're the only basic cards I'm missing and I haven't gotten any in 4 basic packs.
You can't get basic cards through packs, they're just added to your collection
Love this update!
I saw a tweet linked on Reddit that golden and non golden are treated as different collections. Having one golden and one regular does not count as having two of that card and won't protect against opening another one.
Edit: found the link

i dont know but i opened pack today and only got card i already have so not really working the so called no duplicate
If I craft cards day 1, then open packs, will the ruling still register me as having those cards and therefore I wont be opening them in packs?
Because if it doesnt, then day 1 crafting epics is counter intuitive, as it has been in the past.
It should work fine, just like with legendaries in the past. As with legendaries though, unless you're determined to have them golden there isn't much reason to craft them until you have finished opening your (day 1) packs.
On the dev video that first talked about this change and how the new head dev taking over talked about how they actually played the game this is what made me actually believe they do. Gokd change.
Will there be some indication to cards i have disenchanted and will not get in pack or do i just have to remember?
I doubt the game would show it anywhere. You could write it down yourself if you want it recorded somewhere.
Today is about all other rarities though ;)
So in other words you don’t have a full collection and you keep DE’ing these two and opening them again. I get you. But prior to this change you really should have kept them to avoid re-opening. If you currently don’t have them when the change happened, it’s likely you aren’t marked as having opened them either. So you’ll probably get them one more time before you can DE and still be safe to avoid them
Understandable. I used to do that, but now I tend to get enough packs through preorder and my gold stash that I am good. I also DE'd all my golden cards unless I didn't have two or if they were legendary. Sacrificed some flare for more dust reserves to help catch up on card collection over time.
I have disenchanted Cold Blood back when it was nerfed and never opened it in a pack since. This was only Classic common card I was missing.
I've just opened a Classic pack and both copies of Cold Blood were in it.
Nice!
