Hearthstone's China side is running a Battlegrounds tournament later this week and as a part of their promotion, Patches the Pirate can be seen beside the logo.
We are in the belief that this means we're getting some Pirates added to Battlegrounds, much like the Dragons-heavy patch that hit earlier this year. Apparently, this update is going to be arriving this week, so be on the lookout for official patch notes from Blizzard sometime this week and our usual datamining.

This looks awesome, but I just don't have the time to dump on doing Battlegrounds. I like playing them, but that is part of the joy of Arena and regular play. You can just pick up a game here and there, but the Battlegrounds require so much time to invest into it

The problem with pirates in battlegrounds, as far as I see it, is that most of the cards would have to be specific to battlegrounds, and the classic pirate design space of weapons cannot be done in battlegrounds.
Maybe something with a BG variant of ship's cannon or something to do with coins could be interesting.
Dragons in constructed are centered around having one in hand, so they are almost all new cards in BGs.
I don't think that is really a problem. Too many creature types might start becoming one however.
They might retire one of the creature types when introducing pirates.
Edit: it will be actually more complicated than that, but I was right.
But why patches? His ability does nothing in BG. Or will he just charge into your board from Bob's tavern when you play a pirate?

I wonder if the patch will come with more balance changes for Constructed as well.

Does battlegrounds really need more types? It's hard enough to built a consistent board as is

More than likely is that we'd see the removal of another tribe (or most of one) as Pirates were added in.
Battlegrounds definitely needs a bit of pruning so that they can begin to add on to it again :D
I don't know if it really need more types or not, but I think menagerie and devine shield are good enough builds. Maybe they are aiming for strong mixed class boards?
Hmmm, you think this could be released in the same patch as the solo Outland content that no one at Blizzard is talking about? Two secret batches of content at the same time would make sense I guess.
Would a super secret arena reset be too much to hope for too?

It should be. Normally happens half way through an expansion release so I'm hoping it's imminent, but have heard no mention of it over the last few days.
