The Rewards Track - How Long to Get to Level 50, 644000 Experience Required to Get to Level 150

Published 5 years ago by (Updated 4 years, 11 months ago)

Update December  17, 2020 - Please see the new numbers in our new article here. The post below has not been modified for historical accuracy.

We've put together a handy table with all the experience requirements and rewards for the reward track, Hearthstone's new progression system.

  • The variable rewards go up until level 50 at which point they become a simple 150 Gold every level.
  • You earn experience by completing weekly quests, daily quests, and the gameplay Darkmoon Faire achievements.
  • You also earn experience by just playing the game. The amount varies per mode.

Blizzard has stated in ranked play, you'll earn around 400 XP per hour (wins give more XP). If you wanted to hit the max level of the system, 150, it would therefore require you to play 1610 hours of ranked Hearthstone! That's 67 days straight which is definitely possible during the 4-month long cycle of the pass, and it doesn't include the achievements and dailies that you would complete along the way.

How Long to Get to Level 50?

In total, you're going to need to receive 196200 experience. We need to make a few assumptions though before we can give you any great math. For the sake of sanity, we'll assume the following:

  • Every daily quest you receive is 800 XP (the lowest possible).
  • You are playing ranked Hearthstone which grants 400 XP per hour.

So, how long is it going to take?

If you were to simply play games, you're looking at 20.4375 Days of gameplay. (196200 (XP for 50) / 400 (XP/Hour) / 24 (Hours Per Day)). Obviously, we're going to be doing much more than that though! This ends up being a difficult calculation to make though because there are a lot of factors involved, one being your collection.

Experience From Achievements

There are several achievements that reward experience and they are all from the Darkmoon Faire. We're assuming the XP portion of these achievements will be removed when the next expansion launches as to not make it too easy to level up in that expansion, but they're available now so let's use them.

  • Each class has 5 different achievements.
    • The first two achievements each reward 200 XP.
    • The third achievement has 3 tiers rewarding 100 XP, 100XP, and 500 XP.
    • The total experience earned is 1100 per class.
  • There are 20 Neutral achievements.
    • The experience rewards are different for each achievement.
    • Completing all these achievements rewards 3800 XP.

With those achievements in mind, we get an easy total!

  • 11000 XP earned from all class achievements.
  • 3800 XP earned from Neutral achievements.
  • 14800 XP earned from Darkmoon Faire Achievements.

Completing all these achievements gets you, from level 1 to level 14.

The only downside to the achievements is that they require having specific cards and you need to be playing every class. As I said, this is difficult to calculate!

Experience From Daily & Weekly Quests

Each week you can complete three weekly quests starting on each Monday and every day you are given a new Daily.

  • 1 Weekly Quest will always be worth 2500 XP.
  • 2 Weekly Quests will be worth 1750 XP.
  • Your dailies are worth at least 800 XP.

With the above in mind, we're looking at 6000 XP per week earned from the weekly quests and an additional 5600 XP (at the minimum) from dailies.

Completing your weeklies and dailies for the week gives you (at the minimum) 11600 XP.

The Final Count(down)

We're going to assume that you play Hearthstone one hour per day to complete your daily quest and to make progression on your weekly ones. Assuming that is ranked play, because it is the highest value of XP per hour, that is 2800 XP per week.

So now we've got some baseline XP values to work with.

  • Quests: 11600 XP per Week.
  • Achievements: 14800 XP (once).
  • Ranked Play: 2800 XP per Week.

That gives us a total of 14400 XP per week and a one time boost of 14800 XP. With us needing 196200 XP to get to 50, we can knock that down to 181400 XP after the completion of achievements. This lets us solve the rest easy.

181400 / 14400 (XP per Week) = 12.59 Weeks

With it taking just over 12 weeks, that's roughly 3 months or the full duration of the pass. So if you play an hour of Hearthstone a day and make sure you complete your quests and achievements each week, you'll definitely hit level 50 to get that sweet alternate hero prize.

  • Seems like it is that both the level 1 & 5 random rewards are for the Darkmoon Faire expansion.

  • I got Y'Shaarj, the Defiler. Super pumped!

  • Day 1 craft will be Darkmoon Rabbit just for the "Missing: Holy Hand Grenade" achievement.

  • Quote From Kamouh

i see that weekly quests (at least the 4 i saw cause i rerolled 1) are about playing around game modes and i dont really want to play other game modes out of the one i like... i dont think the game should "force" someone into playing something they doesnt really feel like to play... ("force" cause ofc you dont necessarely need to do that, but still you are gonna lose much exp)

You can just keep rerolling the more egregious ones (top 2 in battlegrounds, like really team5?) throughout the week. So I wouldn't exactly call it forced

  • So from my estimate we should expect to get to lvl 58 (5400) without counting time commitment. Now considering time commitment to 8.1k gold (which I see around is most people's goal between expansions) We'll also need to play almost 200 hours between expansions, from my understanding, this seems like quite a bit, but when we divide it into weeks, that's the same as contributing 11.4 hours per week... Quite high, but I suppose its doable).
I think the amount gained per hour should be increased...Maybe doubled? But who knows... To max out the whole table, that's an incredible 59.43 hours per week played

Now if you get the tavern pass you get to ~lvl 69 and 7050 gold without time commitment (doing all daily and weekly quests) and to get the same 8000 gold you only need to do 3 hours per week. (The same equivalent (11ish hours per week) would be lvl 92 (10500 gold))

To max out with tavern pass you would be expected to still play 41.5 hours per week.... Just wow)

So you can see yourself as maybe getting roughly to perhaps a little more than 2k gold with tavern pass, making it pretty much worth it for those who usually preorder (it comes to maybe 1$/pack) so long as you expect to play more than 5-6 hours per week, and only gets more advantageous after that.

  • So how exactly do you earn XP? I haven't had time to download the update. The Tavern Pass only makes sense if it significantly helps leveling faster. Does the XP bonus also apply to daily and weekly quests?

    • As stated in the article:

      • You earn experience by completing weekly questsdaily quests, and the gameplay Darkmoon Faire achievements.
      • You also earn experience by just playing the game. The amount varies per mode.
      • Thank you, I should have asked differently.

What I would like to know is how much XP do you get per time or per game, per mode? What is the most efficient way to earn XP the fastest? Does the XP bonus with the tavern pass apply to quests and achievements? Does it apply retroactively, meaning I get the bonus XP for the amount I collected up to that point? Or do I get punished for buying it late in the expansion?

There are still a lot of open questions to me.

But I saw you expanded the post, that definitely helps a lot, though I am still not totally clear on all the details. I wish Blizzard would be more transparent. Thanks for putting in all the work though! Much appreciated!

  • I pushed this live a bit early because I didn't want to bump down our card reviews., I've now added in the math stuff.

    • Small thing to correct 12 weeks is 3 months, not 4

      • Oops, that was the intention! Fixed

        • I assumed, just wanted to let you know :)

  • You get around 4200 gold before you reach the cap + 7 packs of the current expansion. Let's say its an even 5k gold worth before the cap.

From there on you need about 4k - 4.5k xp per level after the cap to gain 150 gold. So that's about 4 quests. In one week you can get 7 quest + 1 weekly quest up to a minimum of 7350. Let's factor in the fact that you will highroll your dailies about 4 times in 7 days that's 8150 xp per week, not counting the xp gains when you play the game.

So, assuming you reach about 9k xp per week, you can just about look forward to 300 gold per week after the cap (which should theoretically take you less than 24 days to reach). 3 months worth at 300 gold per week is about 3600 gold. Which means you'll have about 7800 gold by the end of the expansion. Pretty much near what I would call near breakeven with the old system.

    Edit: Okay, thanks to meneznas for reminding me that you get 3 weekly quest per week (its rather unintuitive to be honest). So my revised calc is as below;

7 quests + 3 weekly = 11650 xp per week (not counting xp gains from plays, at 4 dailies highrolls). So that's 139,800 xp in three months, which makes up to about 4650 gold after the level 50 cap.

Add that to the 4200 gold gained up to level 50 that's 8850 gold. Which is about on par with what most people are getting from 4 months per expansion. If I compare it with my own gains from the old system, that goes over what I usually get.

(Feel free to check my math. I'm doing this on the back of an envelope, so you'll pardon me if there's any mistakes)

    • AnonymousUser's Avatar

So in the old system i got between 7x50g=350g and 7x60g=420g per week (not counting possible 80g or 100g) and now i have to highroll quests to be able to get 300g? That's far from "breaking even" by my book.

      • You get like 4200 gold just getting up to level 50, which by my own estimates should take less than a month. So consider that as a advance of the amount on the gold you'll get from the full 4 months.

I wouldn't take issue with the gold per week after cap, since by then I'm usually hoarding gold for the next expansion anyway.

    • You actualy get 3 weekly quests every week. Sorry if you conted them in, I am too lazy to check, but just from the reading it seems like you have counted only one.

    • That sounds similar to my back of the envelope calculation as well.

The 20% tavern pass bonus really impacts gold gain post level 50. In reaching the (non-gold) reward cap, I think the tavern pass results in almost ~1200g more... as you reach level 58 w/ the pass in the same amount of xp a non-pass would take to reach level 50.

For me to buy the tavern pass (aside from wanting certain cosmetics), I want to be getting > 100G/ 1$ spent. I think this seems rather easy to do, since the play time rewards will add up over the course of the expansion period. For me this is ~level 64 w/ tavern pass. That would require ~3-4h a week of play if the 400xp/h rates are true (480xp/h w/ pass)

      • yeah, that 10% boost will mean you get about 30420 extra xp which translate to around 1000 extra gold. Could be more depending on play time.

But its still not really worth it for me. 20 USD is an awful lot of money where I come from. Had it not been for the mid expansion being staple now, I might have been tempted. But knowing blizz, they would likely put up some sort of discount bundle at the same price mid expansion too, so I rather spend my money there.

  • It says on the Rewards Track that it resets Next Expansion, does that main resets next week or the next expansion in April?
