The Rewards Track - How Long to Get to Level 50, 644000 Experience Required to Get to Level 150

Published 5 years ago by (Updated 4 years, 11 months ago)

Update December  17, 2020 - Please see the new numbers in our new article here. The post below has not been modified for historical accuracy.

We've put together a handy table with all the experience requirements and rewards for the reward track, Hearthstone's new progression system.

  • The variable rewards go up until level 50 at which point they become a simple 150 Gold every level.
  • You earn experience by completing weekly quests, daily quests, and the gameplay Darkmoon Faire achievements.
  • You also earn experience by just playing the game. The amount varies per mode.

Blizzard has stated in ranked play, you'll earn around 400 XP per hour (wins give more XP). If you wanted to hit the max level of the system, 150, it would therefore require you to play 1610 hours of ranked Hearthstone! That's 67 days straight which is definitely possible during the 4-month long cycle of the pass, and it doesn't include the achievements and dailies that you would complete along the way.

How Long to Get to Level 50?

In total, you're going to need to receive 196200 experience. We need to make a few assumptions though before we can give you any great math. For the sake of sanity, we'll assume the following:

  • Every daily quest you receive is 800 XP (the lowest possible).
  • You are playing ranked Hearthstone which grants 400 XP per hour.

So, how long is it going to take?

If you were to simply play games, you're looking at 20.4375 Days of gameplay. (196200 (XP for 50) / 400 (XP/Hour) / 24 (Hours Per Day)). Obviously, we're going to be doing much more than that though! This ends up being a difficult calculation to make though because there are a lot of factors involved, one being your collection.

Experience From Achievements

There are several achievements that reward experience and they are all from the Darkmoon Faire. We're assuming the XP portion of these achievements will be removed when the next expansion launches as to not make it too easy to level up in that expansion, but they're available now so let's use them.

  • Each class has 5 different achievements.
    • The first two achievements each reward 200 XP.
    • The third achievement has 3 tiers rewarding 100 XP, 100XP, and 500 XP.
    • The total experience earned is 1100 per class.
  • There are 20 Neutral achievements.
    • The experience rewards are different for each achievement.
    • Completing all these achievements rewards 3800 XP.

With those achievements in mind, we get an easy total!

  • 11000 XP earned from all class achievements.
  • 3800 XP earned from Neutral achievements.
  • 14800 XP earned from Darkmoon Faire Achievements.

Completing all these achievements gets you, from level 1 to level 14.

The only downside to the achievements is that they require having specific cards and you need to be playing every class. As I said, this is difficult to calculate!

Experience From Daily & Weekly Quests

Each week you can complete three weekly quests starting on each Monday and every day you are given a new Daily.

  • 1 Weekly Quest will always be worth 2500 XP.
  • 2 Weekly Quests will be worth 1750 XP.
  • Your dailies are worth at least 800 XP.

With the above in mind, we're looking at 6000 XP per week earned from the weekly quests and an additional 5600 XP (at the minimum) from dailies.

Completing your weeklies and dailies for the week gives you (at the minimum) 11600 XP.

The Final Count(down)

We're going to assume that you play Hearthstone one hour per day to complete your daily quest and to make progression on your weekly ones. Assuming that is ranked play, because it is the highest value of XP per hour, that is 2800 XP per week.

So now we've got some baseline XP values to work with.

  • Quests: 11600 XP per Week.
  • Achievements: 14800 XP (once).
  • Ranked Play: 2800 XP per Week.

That gives us a total of 14400 XP per week and a one time boost of 14800 XP. With us needing 196200 XP to get to 50, we can knock that down to 181400 XP after the completion of achievements. This lets us solve the rest easy.

181400 / 14400 (XP per Week) = 12.59 Weeks

With it taking just over 12 weeks, that's roughly 3 months or the full duration of the pass. So if you play an hour of Hearthstone a day and make sure you complete your quests and achievements each week, you'll definitely hit level 50 to get that sweet alternate hero prize.

it says that in the article, almost at the beginning

You are playing ranked Hearthstone which grants 400 XP per hour.

    • Thanks and sorry I missed that.  Do you know when these are awarded, is it in small amounts after every game?

      • AnonymousUser's Avatar

yep, and even if it doesn't show(in arena for example, i think it's bugged and it doesn't display XP gains after each game) it still gives you the exp, i specifically checked

  • I really don't understand how this system will going to give us the same amount of gold of the old system?

I have been playing this game until I reach diamond rank 5 every month and it takes around 40-60 matches (which is around 7-8 hours per week). I also complete nearly all my daily quests. In the end I have been collecting around 6000-8000 gold for each expansion.

This new system will give me only 4200 gold if I reach level 50 and reaching level 50 most probably took more than what I've been playing for reaching diamond rank 5.

This means that, I will be playing more than what I've been used to and I'll only get 1/2-3/4 of what I've been earning.

I don't understand how the devs can tell us that you'll be earning at least the amount you've been earning in the prior system.

Can someone enlighten me if I'm missing something here? I think they are counting the free legendary and packs on the road as gold earnings..

    • AnonymousUser's Avatar

      Yes I agree.

We were promised we wouldn't be worse off in terms of gold.

Unless you are going to play hours and hours every day to get well beyond level 50, I don't see how we're not going to be (outside of infinite arena etc).

Oh, and just noticed the last 5 normal levels are 43500 XP in total.  The reward?  600 gold, 2 packs and a cosmetic I don't care about.  That XP is going to take ALOT longer than the 10 days of gold reward quests it would have taken to get the 600g.

It's all fun and nice right now with a free legendary, new shiny packs and gold raining from the sky.   Let's see how it feels in a few months when progress is slow and grindy for little reward.  It's then you'll have to buy new packs for the mini-expac that's launched.

Also the front loaded easy gold we're quickly getting on the reward path right now could be considered as supposed to being for the expansion after this one if you save up for each expac.

      • I collect my personal data, how much gold I collect between expansions (Daily Quests + 10g for 3 wins). My average is 7500 gold between expansions.

I recalculated that in current system, 4200 gold from Quests + around 2550 gold for playing time, so 67 level reached in new system.

6750 gold vs 7500 gold, means I will get 90% what I was getting... In other words - current system means 10% less GOLD between expansions for me. Please, don't ask me for all details on calculations, I might create forum thread for that.

I calculated only pure gold gain there. Reward Track gives us - current expansion packs (7) and previous expansion packs (9), I have not taken those into account. Remember, we were getting Legendary Quests for 5-8 new packs, at each expansion start anyways...

EDIT - if we get some small bonus for wins (in XP for Reward Track), I obviously didn't count that, we don't know, how big that bonus is.

      • Yeah, I can see it more clearly now. I've made a mistake in my own earlier calculations by not looking harder at the total xp needed to reach level 50. From what I can see now, it will still take around 3 months for anyone not playing this full time to get to level 50. The total gold gained at the end of the 4 months should be around 6k gold + 7 current expansion packs.

Man, looks like we got hoodwinked around 2k gold.

Hope there's enough fire and brimstone generated around so team5 reviews this shit. Otherwise, I might have to review my own involvement with hearthstone in future.

        What happened to:

Assuming you play the same amount and have the same quest completion rate, you shouldn't earn less gold or non-gold in the new system. In nearly all circumstances you should be earning slightly more gold and more non-gold (packs, etc).

Quests give you experience, which helps you level up. Leveling up gives you rewards, most of which is gold. Gold gains should be roughly the same amount of 'immediate' in the new system as in the old system.

4200 gold doesn't equal 7200 gold (120 * 60) let alone "slightly more".  And I didn't even factor the win 3 game gold bonus we've lost now nor play a friend trading.

And definitely not with the same level of play as before (i.e. play 3 games win or lose each day or every few days).

Am I missing something?  Are we expected to get to level 70 and this be considered the same amount of play as we needed for 7200 gold before?
  • I"m not too happy about this system for one simple reason above all else... there are classes that I hate to play and will be hindered because of that.  Anyone that doesn't like to play Hunter or Priest will not be able to reap the rewards of this system because their play style doesn't work with those classes.

    • AnonymousUser's Avatar

In terms of the XP rewarding achievements for classes I doubt I'll have much chance anyway as most of them require expensive legendaries/epics to complete them anyway I won't have.

Couldn't they have made the achievements fun and budget friendly?  Maybe there's a chance with Whizzbang in Wild if casual is valid for the achievements.

  • I'm assuming these prizes follow duplicate rules and it gives you a new legendary everytime.

  • Which random Darkmoon Faire legendary did everyone get for lvl 1? Mine was Deck of Chaos!!!
