We've got some huge updates coming to Battleground's newest tribe, Quilboar! The tribe came into Hearthstone Battlegrounds recently with a huge, overpowered disruption to the meta and Blizzard has agreed that they needed to tone back the tribe quite a bit. Here are all the changes coming to the newest minions.
Two of the largest changes come from Bonker and Charlga:
- Bonker has lost 1 attack and when golden, now only gives you 1 Blood Gem per swing attack, down from 2.
- Charlga no longer buffs itself and has lost 3/3 in stats, now a 4/4 instead of a 7/7.
These, among the rest of the changes down below, should give the other tribes some breathing room from the onslaught of the Quilboar.

Surprised no one moved a Tier. Also think the Dynamic Duo nerf was silly: if you're snowballing with Blood Gems, is the -2/-2 really gonna be a difference-maker? Hopefully the nerfs around it were enough.
Yea seems silly but maybe the Duo nerf was intended to hit it's immediate impact the turn it's bought (i.e. QuillBoar as a tribe is about growing with gems, so their base stats are slightly lower since their greatest asset is scaling)
Roadboar was already a bad pick turn 3, didn't think he was getting nerfed.
And now Prophet of the Boar is the new Pack Leader.
Tough Tusk untouched 🙄
Might be a bit unnecessary but I felt like they should have just removed Aggem Thorncurse as well. Mainly because it's weird for there to be a better Menagerie card than Lightfang. It just feels like it makes Lightfang pointless. Maybe it's just me though.
Aggem can only really match Lightfang if you have a golden Blood Gem generator you can rely on, and since all of those are quillboar, you're now running two from that tribe, affecting the efficiency of your other payoffs. It's probably okay.
It's not efficient to run more than 4 tribes when you're Menagerie anyways, and running just 3 is already fine especially with Mech-based Menagerie. You need one buff spot, Lightfang, and a free space in case of another Lightfang, Brann, Mithrax. If you're going for Aggem you're running the same amount, but the point of Aggem is that he's a Bloodgem sink that can buff other units which can easily outscale Lightfang if you get the units that give Blood Gems or if you have kept Blood Gems from before. So not only do you get one bigger unit, but you can also outscale Lightfang in that regard.
So if you're running Aggem over Lightfang, you get one more unit who can actually trade.
Imo, he's just as good if not better than Lightfang because he has more potential, especially with units like Dynamic Duo, Captain Flat Tusk. Compared to Lightfang who can only consistently give +2/+2 in a single turn. So the only time you ever go for Lightfang is when you don't have a single Blood Gem generator. You also don't even need a golden one because you now have more access to buff cards like Sun-Bacon.
Yeah, whenever I tried Thorncurse, I always found it kind of awkward.
Seems weird that they didn't nerf Tough Tusk, that many stats on tier 2 and it can easily have a divine shield? Deflect-o-Bot is crying.
Not sure this will be enough honestly.
I think one of the more understated, but very powerful Quilboar cards is Necrolyte, which didn't see any change. And the amount of blood gems gained from Quilboars didn't change either, except for golden Bonker.
The fact that you can buff your early game minions, and then transfer many of those buffs to a powerful late game minion, like a Foe Reaper 4000, Bristleback Knight or similar, is pretty busted. With all other builds, you are often forced to waste many early game buffs when swapping out your minions. I think it's pretty cool that you can transfer buffs like this now. But it leaves all other build strategies in the dust come late game.
Not sure how one would change Necrolyte, but maybe only transfer Blood Gems from the right most minion on the board, and move it up a tavern tier.
isnt groundshaker the same ? can someone explain the change plz i really not seeing it. XD
It doesn't buff itself.
oh okay thanks it isnt too hard of a nerf i guess.
I had to read it three times too :D It no longer buffs itself.
Doesnt buff itself anymore.
That is a veritable carpet-bombing of nerfs... and all of it deserved.
Yeah, it's been rough playin Battlegrounds recently. I can't not go for Quilboar but everyone else is doing the same thing so it just becomes super luck-based. The combos have been a ton of fun to play with though and I'm looking forward to feeling them out once the changes drop.
Agreed. At least now it won't feel like "quillboar or bust" in BG's. I'm a little concerned about hitting so many of the quillboar at once (read: the nerfs are definitely warranted, but wasn't expecting this many concurrent nerfs) that I feel like this is gonna relegate quillboar to a B tier comp.
The fact that certain Quillboar-tribe cards snowballed so hard contributed to this all-or-nothing feel, I think. Triple into an early Bonker who can stay ahead with buffs and the gem generation could get stupid. Whoever got an early Banner Boar had a huge edge.
I kept finding myself stuck, thinking, "I don't really want to go Quillboar this game"... and then feeling foolish if I didn't. It reminds me of early Elementals that way.
