Blitzchung and two casters from Taiwan have been removed from the Hearthstone Grandmasters program.
On Sunday, Blitzchung made a comment on the Asia-Pacific Grandmaster's stream in a post-match interview, while in a mask, stating "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our age". Blizzard Taiwan removed the VOD containing the interview and it, rightfully so, caused a bit of a stir on reddit. Blizzard has now put up an official blog post on the matter, stating Blitzchung will receive no prize money and be banned for 1 year from the tournament series.
This is certainly troubling that a single country, China, can have this much of an effect on Hearthstone when they quite clearly violate basic human rights. Blizzard has a deep relationship with China with NetEase running all their games for the Chinese locale, and one thing they do in response to that relationship is refer to Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei", a move we don't copy here instead refering to the country as it should be, Taiwan. I've never been one that agrees with the mix of gaming and politics, but here we are.
Tencent, one of China's largest gaming companies, purchased a 5.023% share of Activision-Blizzard back in June of 2016. Tencent also owns 100% of Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends, 48.4% of Epic Games, and an unknown amount of Discord. Additional ownership information was recently covered on PCGamer.
In support of Blitzchung, many on reddit have stated they had their Battle.net accounts closed, are going to instead go to the F2P model, or will no longer be playing the game.
What are your thoughts on this?
Quote From Blizzard During the Asia-Pacific Grandmasters broadcast over the weekend there was a competition rule violation during a post-match interview, involving Blitzchung and two casters, which resulted in the removal of the match VOD replay.
Upon further review we have found the action has violated the 2019 Hearthstone Grandmasters Official Competition Rules section 6.1 (o) and is individual behavior which does not represent Blizzard or Hearthstone Esports. 6.1 (o) is found below.
2019 HEARTHSTONE® GRANDMASTERS OFFICIAL COMPETITION RULES v1.4 p.12, Section 6.1 (o)
Engaging in any act that, in Blizzard’s sole discretion, brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image will result in removal from Grandmasters and reduction of the player’s prize total to $0 USD, in addition to other remedies which may be provided for under the Handbook and Blizzard’s Website Terms.
Grandmasters is the highest tier of Hearthstone Esports and we take tournament rule violations very seriously. After an investigation, we are taking the necessary actions to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
Effective immediately, Blitzchung is removed from Grandmasters and will receive no prizing for Grandmasters Season 2. Additionally, Blitzchung is ineligible to participate in Hearthstone esports for 12 months beginning from Oct. 5th, 2019 and extending to Oct. 5th, 2020. We will also immediately cease working with both casters.
We’d like to re-emphasize tournament and player conduct within the Hearthstone esports community from both players and talent. While we stand by one’s right to express individual thoughts and opinions, players and other participants that elect to participate in our esports competitions must abide by the official competition rules.

What's particularly depressing about this for people outside of china is that it shows how your rights can be violated by foreign countries using (tech) companies as proxies, on the premise that companies have the right to refuse service to anyone for any reason.
And for this reason, among others, I'm glad Out of Cards is independent.
Oh wow who knew, companies don't care about morals. Welcome to the real world kids. You can't do anything about it, none can change this fucking system where everything is based on money. It's all doomed. But oh yeah, let's forget about that fact and go on with our "happy" lowlives, working same shit every day for a boss who didn't even deserve it then enjoy your 2 week holiday while some were born not to work at all. Money rules, morals are a joke. It's good that reality hits every now and then and games are no exception. Reality hits even there.
Edit: oh yeah, now let's drink and forget about those...
I've spent several hundred on this game. I still love it. And now I'm seriously considering walking away from everything Blizzard. I really enjoy their fandoms but this is insane.
I can't dispute that they're in the right to censure Blitzchung. Their platform, their rules, so fine. But to hard ban him and zero out his pay, as well as nuke the casters? (Yes, I'm aware they encouraged him to repeat what he said in Mandarin.) That's a little much.
There's a bunch of other games that have been calling for my attention. I would miss Hearthstone and this community, but maybe it's time.
I 100% agree. Grandmasters isn't the place to talk about politics, but the punishment was way too harsh and it's clear what statement they're trying to make.
If you want to take a break from Hearthstone, MTG Arena / Magic just launched a new set! It also has a pretty awesome F2P experience.
DotA Underlords plays pretty well on mobile and is sort-of a card game! Same goes for Clash Royale which I've personally had quite a bit of fun playing.
Right now I'm a huge fan of Brawl Stars though, though not much of a card game, the matches are quick.
I know a few people playing Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links, though I can't really give a proper recommendation for it since I haven't played it.
Downloaded Brawl Stars yesterday. Thanks Flux.. I am having a hard time putting it down!
Not a fan of Underlords, it takes too long for a nice mobile game imho.
Clash Royale isn't my taste either.
Brawl Stars is really good, I wonder why I stopped playing. And Yu-Gi-Oh! I'll check out :)
I had stepped out from M:tGA to return to my beloved Hearthstone. But yeah, might be an idea
Stop watching Grandmasters, period. Damn the free packs..
Want to support a country in need, join an Activist group. Not Activision..
Just another reminder in case you don't already know: Companies only care about money. They have no conscience or morals outside of money.
"This is certainly troubling that a single country, China, can have this much of an effect on Hearthstone when they quite clearly violate basic human rights."
Agreed. Money shouldn't be more or as important as treating people fairly and respecting their rights (which do not include non self defense violence from a small minority).
I sometimes wonder what intelligent alien life would think of our species if they came to peacefully visit. So you guys destroy your planet, kill each other and spend huge resources on defending your bit of land against members of your own species on other bits of land. You reward vapid "celebrities" and sports/entertainment stars obscenely whilst those that actually help humankind get far far less. Oh and many of the people on your world don't have enough food, clean drinking water or medical care and die/suffer as a result.
Humans. Just clever enough to be stupid.
Good article, thanks Flux. Freedom of expression has to be defended, or we'll lose it.
better defend it by stop playing a children's card game, that'll surely topple the chinese tyranny
I'm going to go F2P after this. Who's in?
Yep, I was all set to buy at least one of the bundles, but pumping the brakes now.
