Pack opening story and analysis
This is not a complaint thread, more of a commentary and attempt at a neutral analysis of my pack opening.
First off I need to set the stage. I am 100% free to play and typically save up at least 8k gold between expansions. My philosophy is to purchase 60 decks and use whatever freebies Blizzard hands out to form the basis of my collection. If I get close to the legendary pity timer at the end of opening those packs, I'll buy a few packs at a time until I hit the timer. This time around I already had three packs waiting from my monthly ladder rewards and I completed day 1 of the special quests to get two more packs before I opened anything.
My login reward was Infiltrator Lilian. I guess it has some promise, but it wasn't my first choice. I suspect with the Self-Sharpening Sword and Secret Passage there will be some decks out there that will make use of her.
I got my first legendary Ras Frostwhisper at pack 3, not even halfway into the first 10 timer for a new set. He looks pretty cool and I think there is some potential for a spell power mage deck to work with this.
My next one came 19 packs later, Lord Barov. I'm not too excited about this one, but who knows. Two out of my first 5 epics in this stretch were Secret Passage, so I've at least got that much nerf dust coming to me. :-)
The next one did not come until 39 packs later. I can't tell you how anxious I got waiting for that gold glow. This one I do feel good about, Sphere of Sapience should be integral for a few decks that come up. And that was the end of my notable cards. My most notable pack was having an epic show up in the same pack as my last legendary. My golden count was 9 (1 epic, 4 rare, and 4 common).
Interestingly enough, 65 packs was the exact amount I needed to get all the rare cards. I double checked using 'missing' and 'extra' searches in my collection, and I have exactly two of every rare card. I also got 12 total epic cards and the three legendary. With the epic timer at 10, that probably makes five packs the average, so I'm right on the money there. If we remove the first legendary and the first 10 cards that puts me at 2/50 which is slightly below average.
I do have some dust stored up that I can comfortably craft a few must have epic or legendary cards. I'll just be patient and wait to see which ones those are.
Anyone else care to share their experience?

Unfortunately, common sense isn't as common as it should be.
I got Mindrender Illucia for logging in and golden Disciplinarian Gandling from the 85 pack pre-order. I opened Turalyon, the Tenured in the fifth pack. I also opened Infiltrator Lilian and Doctor Krastinov in the first 40 packs and in the last pack I got Jandice Barov. So it was a little light on legendary cards compared to other pre-orders, I've participated in.
I received 19 epics, one of them golden, so I think that's above average.
Starting AoO, I started keeping a spreadsheet of all my pack openings in my main account to remove my confirmation bias and reduce my tilt for being unlucky. The approach has been working well for me so far.
I also bought the pre-purchase offer, so in my 80 packs I had the following results:
For my 5 golden, I got these:
Overall, I'm happy with my pulls. Not the greatest, but above average (I'm usually unlucky)
EDIT:
Ugh, my next packs were brutal. Bought 45 with gold.
Hit my first legendary at pity timer 34 (and it's Archwitch Willow too :( ) [timer continued from my first 80].
Still no legendary till now. Pity timer is at 25.
I guess my initial run burned all my luck.
I opened 102 so far, bought from gold. 10 to come with quests and my last 600 gold.
I had my first common twice in the first pack, my first rare twice in pack 5. The last all new pack was #10.*edited. I meant both copies of a card.
I finished commons with the 28th pack, rares in 62.
With 20 epics I'm completIy average here. got all priest ones double, and one of each paladin and hunter.
I got 7 legendaries + a free Mozaki, Master Duelist. This is way above average, specificly I'm in the luckiest 14% percent here. The longest stretch between was 38 packs, and once I had two legendaries in back-to-back packs. Ras Frostwhisper,Infiltrator Lilian,Vectus, Ace Hunter Kreen, Sphere of Sapience ,Speaker Gidraand Instructor Fireheart. I'm quite happy with those, since I like to play hunter and rogue, and, if it is viable, I also have everything for a spelldamage deck.
I got 5 golden common, 3 golden rare, and 1 golden epic.-slightly below average, but who cares.
I play on all 3 regions, and usually get a good opening, and ok one, and a below average.
This time I'd say all 3 were below average.
P = Packs
E = epics
L = Legendaries
LE/LL = how many packs ago that rarity was opened.
So if we discount the 3 legendaries here that are guaranteed in first 10 packs, and remove 5 packs from the total of each region as an average, I opened 208 packs and got 7 legendaries for an 29.71 average - way higher than the 20 pack average.
Of course given I'm way into the pity timer on each region (26,34,21) I'll continue opening them when possible for the next legendary and the average will drop. It will still be below average though for all 3 regions.
And to be fair epics were slightly above average.
Though in summary it felt like this:
i.e. pack after pack with no legendary
All generalizations are false.
Rattlegore for logging in, Alabaster in the first 4 packs and then only Speaker Gidra after 43 packs opened.
Still missing 20 rares at this point (I ended up craftin Voracious Reader because I don't have time to wait for that many packs)
I tried having fun once.
It was awful.
Got Professor Slate for logging in, not too happy about that. After that, opened Ace Hunter Kreen in the 8th pack as my first in tenth. Quite the turning point, i may say.
I got 70 packs ready from gold, and i open 10 pack every few hours so that the hype not running out so soon. Now i've open 40 pack and to my delight i got Instructor Fireheart on the last pack.
Got 30 more to open till next day i think.. i feel i could get 1 more in those 30 but hopefully.. hopefully blizzard bless me with 2.
Not sure what you mean by first duplicate in the first pack due to the change in all rarities where no duplicate cards will show till you've got them all (per rarity)
I think I was quite lucky. 42 packs total. Most notable cards:
Ace Hunter Kreen off of login
Infiltrator Lilian in first 10 packs
Jandice Barov
Star Student Stelina
golden Survival of the Fittest
Forest Warden Omu on my very last pack
TREMBLE before.... the most legendary dragon that ever existed!
So far I´ve opened 60 (gold) + 4 free packs, and got:
1free Disciplinarian Gandling
3 legedaries Infiltrator Lilian, Ras Frostwhisper and Vectus.
14 epics (one golden Secret Passage), all rares and commons.
Not bad I guess.
EDIT: After opening two free packs from legendary quest I got one more epic and a legendary Instructor Fireheart. Pretty happy with results now :)
Offtopic: I think I´m going on the same route as Elfensilver with opened legendaries XD
♡ u 4ever 2008 - 2022
For the first time ever I decided to put a bit of money into the game. And I've gotta say, I was far from unsatisfied...
From 135 + 2 legendary quest packs I got:
All commons and rares, obviously; I only miss the 2 copies of the new DH/Hunter weapon (trueaim something?) and one Educated Elekk for epics; and excluding "free" legendaries (2 golden from bundles + 1 from logging in) I got 9 other legendaries; AND like 3700 dust from all the extras, and that is without goldens and eventual nerfed cards in the mix.
I always thought it was a bit of a waste of money, but with the new non-duplicate rules I'd honestly recommend it if you can afford and if the expansion looks nice, because I'm having SUCH a blast with all the different decks and classes I can use, more than I've had in years!
I grade my Schoolomancy packs a C. I would say it was average. 6 legendaries out of 132 packs = 22 packs per legendary (about average); 38 epics out of 132 packs = 3.47 packs per epic (excellent). The 5 golden packs contained 18 commons, 6 rares, 1 epic, 0 legendaries (average).
The great: The epic count was great and I got most of what i wanted here. Free golden Legendary High Abbess Alura
The good: Instructor Fireheart, Jandice Barov (I like this kind of RNG), and free regular legendary [Hearthstone Card (Dr. Krastinov) Not Found]
The meh: The golden packs (I wasn't expecting a legendary, but was certainly hoping for another epic), the legendary rate, Speaker Gidra, and the other free golden legendary Turalyon, the Tenured.
The bad: Lord Barov, and [Hearthstone Card (Infiltrtor Lilian) Not Found] ( I don't think these cards will ever be good)
The ugly: Archwitch Willow, only getting 4 out of 9 legendaries I really wanted, and the real stinger; no neutral Leagendaries (ouch)!
I have opened 198 Packs + 5 Golden and I am still missing 7 Legendarys to complete the set (although I have dust for two and I haven't disenchanted the golden extras yet).
Expensive game! :)
Managed to get that last legendary on each of my accounts.
NA 38 packs
EU 39 packs
ASIA 34 packs
Like I say, haven't done very well this expansion.
All generalizations are false.
Didn't do so well with my packs as well. Got 2+1 legendaries in 56 packs. One of which reached the 40 pack pity timer, which up until now I've never experienced.
Do you guys have this strange thing where your first legendary will almost always come before the ten pack timer, then its like an average of 10-20 packs until you get the other one? Has happened to me like for the past 5 expansions.
25 packs
Log in Disciplinarian Gandling
Legendaries Ras Frostwhisper & Golden Turalyon, the Tenured
Let me light the way.
You will always get your first legendary in the first 10 packs. Blizzard introduced a new mechanic where the first packs of an expansion have a legendary pity timer of 10. After that it reverts to 40. I think I have typically gotten my second before the next 20 packs, but my third often feels like I get close to 40.
Edit - not sure why the reply is on this comment, it should be on the one above.
