Ben Lee, Game Director of Hearthstone, has addressed the recent survey that went out to some players which went into a potential change to Hearthstone's progression system via a battle pass. Here's what he had to say:
- Rewards and Progression Systems are undergoing a major rework.
- They intend to maintain the value that players earn within the game.
- A large time investment will not be required to complete levels in the new system.
- Ben earns 5000 Gold per expansion cycle, he does not expect to earn less in the new system.
- They want progression to be done your way, not just tied to playing Standard and Wild for the majority of rewards.
- The new system should feel good to participate in and shouldn't force you to make real-life sacrifices to progress.
- All current rewards are going to be repackaged and it will be easier for you to understand how to obtain them.
- Broadening the benefits of the Tavern Pass system is something being investigated for the new system.
- More earnable cosmetic rewards are going to being added during every expansion.
Ben mentions in a later comment to remind everyone that the 5000 gold is just his personal progression each expansion cycle and not a cap in the system.
We will get to see the new progression systems during the next expansion's reveal phase, which should be slated for November. This will be joined with "a host of other things we have been working on to bring more exciting content to Hearthstone".
Quote From Ben Lee This year we took big steps towards making it easier and more affordable than ever for players to acquire an awesome card collection, including making the game more friendly to our free-to-play-players.
With the launch of Ashes of Outland we implemented the no duplicates rules, introduced free competitive decks for new and returning players, significantly increased ranked rewards, added 1st time ranked rewards, held multiple events with hefty reward packages, offered rewarding expansion quest chains and we’ve also committed to providing free single-player Adventure content for the foreseeable future.
We chose to do these things, because they are good for our players and we believe they are the right thing to do for the game. They weren't reactionary measures to competition or a dwindling player-base. We have many millions of players and are going to be here and strive to remain one of the most popular, relevant and fun games around for many years to come.
We are grateful to our players for their continued support and as described above have worked hard to try and value their time and financial investments fairly. We have no intentions of going back on or undermining the progress we have made on this front.
By the above statement I very specifically mean to identify and clarify that we absolutely intend to maintain the value that players can earn within the game and keep the flexibility of purchases that current rewards provide.
We are undertaking a major rework of our rewards and progression systems. A survey did go out about this recently with the aim of gathering information to help us refine the design of the systems. This isn't something new, Hearthstone has been sending out surveys for years and often what is discussed in these surveys does not represent what ends up going into the game.
One of our goals for this new system is to allow you to play Hearthstone your way, you won't be tied to playing only Standard or Wild in order to obtain the majority of the games’ economic rewards anymore.
We are also planning on repackaging (not reducing) the current rewards that you can obtain in Hearthstone and put that information in-front of you in an easy to view and understand manner. We want you to know how many rewards you've acquired, how many more you can earn and what steps you need to take in order to obtain them. In addition, we're adding a number of exciting cosmetic rewards that players can receive during every expansion.
Finally, we are investigating broadening the benefits of the existing Tavern Pass system to supplement the rewards of the upcoming progression system with exciting new cosmetics.
There’s been some discussion that a huge time investment would be required to complete the levels in the system. We don’t intend this to be the case.
I'll use myself as the example here. I reach Legend every month, during an expansion cycle I typically earn more than 5,000 Gold (I would not expect to earn less under the new system). Outside of Hearthstone I am busy father of two children, I have a demanding full-time job, an active life and I play a huge amount of other games outside of Hearthstone in my spare time. We want people like me who love Hearthstone but also have other responsibilities and interests to be able to complete the rewards track levels.
We want our players to feel good about participating in this new take on rewards and progression, without feeling that they might miss out if they don't have time or that they'd have to make sacrifices in their lives in order to do so.
We look forward to showing you this and a host of other things we've been working on to bring more exciting content to Hearthstone during our Year of the Phoenix Mid-year check in at the start of our next expansion's reveal phase.

I prefer arena but play ranked every month because that's the only way to earn monthly rewards. In fact, I stuck with ranked for a long time (prior to the new reward system) solely for the cosmetics earned only there: golden portraits. I'd love to play the majority of my games in arena an get the same monthly rewards. Right now, I still am forced to play ranked if I want the monthly rewards. This is not to say I'd never play constructed again, but I could certainly see a future where I played constructed only at the lowest ranks (or even in casual) while being much happier to earn rewards via the arena.
My concern is simple: how will that XP be metered out in constructed vs. arena vs. battlegrounds? The comparison isn't exactly linear when considering each mode's time spent playing, games won, etc.
I'll put it simply. If the system doesn't allow to grind at least 10k gold between expansions with max dedication then it is objectively a downgrade (unless of course the cap is lower but you can reach it more easily)
Sounds better now but i still think that if you change the system, you should not get "as much" rewards but more, even if just a little bit. As well as Battlegrounds rewards, like, DAMN, 10 gold every 3 30min match? And if you want to play better pay over 1000 gold for no additional rewards...
I hope the pass revamp is a good one as well.
that's part of the post:

OK, this sounds a lot better now, I'm glad to see Blizzard's way remains keeping F2P viable instead of making it punishing. Now it just remains to be seen what exactly changes.
He probably just edits some code, then bam! Instant Legend rank xD
"Ben earns 5000 Gold per expansion cycle"
With very little gaming the minimum is an average of 70g/day (quest and some won). Multiplied by 7 (days)*17 (weeks) this give almost the double of what Ben earns ...
I use my second account for testing and I only do daily quests there, no playing at all, only against friends. I get 6k gold per cycle so that means 5k gold per cycle is a total lie or he didn't do his math correctly.
>Ben earns 5000 Gold per expansion cycle, he does not expect to earn less in the new system.
And that's exactly what was mentioned in the survey - it mentioned 5240 in total. I manage to earn about 20k gold per expansion cycle. If they reduce gold cap to ~5k, I'll just quit. I don't want to put a damn penny into this crap for a long time already.
Did you really read the damn post? There is no cap at 5k, actually there is no cap at all. It has been cleary said. Wow!!!
Here I put it again FFS!! "Ben mentions in a later comment to remind everyone that the 5000 gold is just his personal progression each expansion cycle and not a cap in the system."
I can only imagine the time you put 'into this crap' in order to earn 20k/cycle.
so they will implement it after all eventhough most of the community doesn't like it, classic. Also:
"Ben earns 5000 Gold per expansion cycle, he does not expect to earn less in the new system." -> tf is this? I don't care how much gold Ben earns. I earn 9k Gold every cycle and I do not want to earn less in the new system. Him mentioning 5000 says nothing about keeping the rewards as they are.
Edit: If they remove the rewards I will be a bit happy because I won't spend that much money on a game. I will use that money for something better. Also, I'm a bit burned out, been in HS for so long. Just give me a good reason to delete the game blizz, I'm tired of broken metas, bad marketing strategies and taking ages to nerf a card. FeelsBadMan
Each expansion cycle has 4 months, around 120 days. Now, lets assume I just play to complete my dailies. Lets also assume every daily I play is 50 gold and, somehow, I were to lose every single game I play throughout said expansion cycle, therefore getting 0 gold from the 10 gold per 3 wins resource generation part of the game. That would leave me with 6000 gold. And that's not including mid expansion events like the "Rusted Legion" event. By saying he earns around 5000g per expansion cycle, Ben Lee says he doesn't even play the game he directs on a regular level.
The Battle Pass could be a neat idea to replace the aforementioned 10 gold per 3 wins rule that would focus mostly on cosmetic while getting a bit of resources where the paying option would get more resources and even more cosmetics, including alternate heroes. Now, to the actual part that really pissed me off:
In the meantime, you also promised we would always get a 60g or better daily quest to show up every day that would be re-rolled to a 50g insanely easy to complete quest and that promise was either broken or there has been a nasty bug in your daily quest code for around the last 5 months.
Also, where are the 100g quests and 80g quests? I know confirmation bias is a thing but I personally went from getting those around twice to three times every month since I started playing the game back in 2014 or whatever the year GvG was released to only getting one 100g quest and zero 80g quests in the last 6 months.
And what about game balance? After beta, the design philosophy was that, when you released cards, they would only be nerfed in a last case scenario basis. Undertaker went unnerfed for 6 months, survived the entire Naxx meta and a chunk of the GvG meta even after GvG brought DR hate cards like Scarlet Purifier and Lil' Exorcist so the card wouldn't be nerfed. Now, we have 4 or 5 balance patches because the game has undergone a brutal power creep scenario.
Are those constant balance changes good? Well, for example, I recently got High Abbess Alura in a pack. I, however, do not own any copy of Devout Pupil, nor do I own Lady Liadrin, for example. Hell, I only have one copy of Blessing of Authority. So, if I decide to craft a Libram Paladin deck to fully utilize this admittedly cool card from a design perspective, I have to spend quite a large amount of dust to make that deck or I'll get a very bad version of the deck, because the power level of the cards being released is so insanely high any changes outside of tech options would severely destroy the deck's consistency. And if I end up crafting said cards by spending most of my dust and the deck ends up being nerfed (a deck which happens to have a 60% winrate according to HS Replay right now), that means the dust I spent will be for nothing, effectively reducing the safety to craft cards that was gained by the no-duplicate rule.
So, in conclusion, out of the 7 "changes" that Ben Lee said that were made, three of them ended up being good, one of them is a 1-time change, another (the ranked rewards) only becomes impactful if you reach an actual mid to high rank and the final one gets less good when looking at the current game design philosophy. In the meantime, said design philosophy made the game feel more expensive than ever, forcing guys like me, who actually want to spend money on this game, to put the brakes on our wallets because I'd rather fall behind in resources than continuing to fall to an almost predatorial business model.
PS: I don't actually dislike Peter Whalen, but the dude has a long and thin neck and a rather big head.
As long as you don’t abolish the daily task rewards and the three wins rewards, then we will be good friends for life.
"Ben mentions in a later comment to remind everyone that the 5000 gold is just his personal progression each expansion cycle and not a cap in the system."
Posting this here just to reemphasize that the cap wasn't moved up to 5000, but allegedly if there is still a cap it is above 5,000 or potentially even no cap at all. Just seeing a lot of posts in the first 2 pages of this article that keep saying the cap is 5,000 when it was clarified that it wasn't the cap.
I'd to address to those posters in the last battle pass thread about waiting til they implement the new model before voicing complaints about it. You notice how they said it is now undergoing a "major rework"? That might not have happened if there weren't fans like us on OoC, Reddit, official forums, etc that hadn't voiced our opinion when news first caught wind about the model.
So way to go all of us that shared our thoughts and feelings about the potential model that could've replaced the amount of gold we earned in the model we've been used to since the game came out.
#teamwork!
Just wanted to let you know, I respect and value your personal comments a great deal, since the last site that I will not name and in this one.
This seems an appropriate place to express those feelings as any, as this comment encompasses your attitude toward forum etiquette.
Thank you.
Awesome, this will help make the average and casual players happy.
Extra rewards for playing have been a thing for almost all the other online card games, I'm glad HS is finally giving some extra incentives to keep playing
When can we expect a recap of the entire AMA? I'm browsing through questions and it kind of seems like that not many were answered.
5000g approximates my typical advancement, so this could be fine.
