Not really, its to slow for odd pally and doesnt hep their worst matchups at all.
Turn 5 they wanna push for lethal or set it up with a buffed board and this doesnt do that and doesnt effect current board AT ALL and is just a 5mana 5/5
Five mana is pretty expensive in Wild, particularly for a relatively fast deck like Odd Paladin that's typically trying to win the game within a turn or two after this guy would drop. Steward of Darkshire already gives Dudes the bubble much earlier than this new card. Five-mana plays in Odd Paladin currently either have to win the game (Quartermaster, Leeroy) or set up a next-turn lethal (Loatheb locks the opponent out, Authority creates a giant Dude, etc.) Trying to do cute things by trading efficiently, making your Dudes sticky, etc, currently isn't worth so much mana. I expect folks to experiment with the new card, but it seems very unlikely to stick.
If Dude Paladin becomes a deck in Standard, this will likely see play - but otherwise, not. A Paladin deck that isn't trying to leverage its Hero Power likely won't care if they get a free Argent Squire after turn five (usually later, given that this guy won't be drawn on-curve the majority of the time.)
But - it'll see some play, and isn't awful, so I gave it 3 stars.
When you thought Silver hand recruits couldn't be more annoying than they already are, this one can be a killer machine. Giving a free shield for each recruit summon is broken. It makes your opponent wonder if they should trade or not just to kill the Silver Hand. With the buff spells it makes them even more annoying.
The only problem is to draw it early, but given the rng it is most likely to be drawn somehow.
Midrange Paladins would be happy to play this in order to protect their recruits while building pressure.
As if dude paladin wasnt cancerous enough in wild
A new friend of Baku have arrived.
Firstly, why is Lothraxion at the Darkmoon Faire? It is related to neither the Light nor the Legion. And what has he got to do with the Silver Hand? I'm not sure why they're intent on shoehorning actual pally characters into recent expansions when making new ones would do fine.
Edit: It's worse than that. If they're going to make a Silver Hand legendary, then why not use one of the actual members of the Silver Hand?
Edit 2: thanks to Alfi pointing it out below, that Lothraxion has some connection to the Silver Hand.
Secondly, this is going to make Odd Pally even more frustrating to play against. Hooray...
Bolvar Fordragon and Malorne both had nothing to do with goblins, gnomes and mechs back in GvG. Archbishop Benedictus is part of the team Old Gods and not team Scourge and he was in KotFT. It isn't anything new that Blizzard adds WoW characters like [Hearthstone Card (Lothraxxion the Redeemed) Not Found] in unfitting expansions, but IMO he is nathrezim - Demonic race and fits new N'Zoth, God of the Deep archetype.
Divine Dreadlord is something uncommon and little bit weird and faires tend to show things like that. We can also say that he is not only "redeemed", but also lightforged in a way and this is what he is doing to Silver Hand Recruits - he is lightforging them.
In the end, probably I am reading to much into this card xD
*In WoW he is a humanoid, but they really wanted that N'Zoth, God of the Deep synergy xD
No, I think you're right to read that much into it. I kinda wish they had done something with the art to place him in this expansion more than just "he's the only demon paladin and we wanted menagerie support". With Yrel doing pretty much the same thing (so far as I can tell she's only here because they wanted a puritanical character for a pure pally), and Turalyon in Scholomance for no reason whatsoever (I mean seriously, he's just about the only paladin with no link to the scourge at all), it just feels like there must be a better way to do this.
I think we can ignore any non-mechs/goblins/gnomes in GvG since it was clear they hadn't committed fully to that theme. Likely they chose not to because they were still trying to keep to established Warcraft lore and there weren't any options for many classes. It is notable that TGT was when they abandoned the old 'Heroes of Warcraft' subtitle and started making up new characters.
I agree Benedictus was a bit of a misfit. I have always wondered whether they included him after mistaking him for Lilian Voss's father. Personally I blame whoever thought it was a good idea to have both an Archbishop Benedictus and a High Priest Benedictus.
On the whole though misfits are rare. The only other one I had real trouble understanding was Wrathion in MSoG.
I belive most of the Hearthstone developers don't really play WoW, so there might be lack/poor communication between teams.
I always thought Wrathion was a weird fit to MSoG, but then there is whole Blacktalon Agency in his service, so maybe it made sense for Blizzard to put him in the city of crimes, but there is no Blacktalon Agent card in this expansion.
They made Turalyon a teacher at Scholomance as an "alternative universe" version of him. However I 100% agree that there are better choices, they could pick Maxwell Tyrosus, who is kind of a secondary leader of Silver Hand and is located in Plaugelands in the Lights Hope Chapel.
I also don't like when they "recycle" characters. With WotOG it was fun, because they were corrupted/uncorrupted versions of the classic legendaries like Ragnaros, Lightlord. And now they make Lady Liadrin and Maiev Shadowsong into cards with no difference than the hero portraits. Or you can duplicate Elise Starseeker and [Hearthstone Card (Elise the Trailbrazer) Not Found] with Elise the Enlightened while playing as Elise xD
I'm fine with them recylcing characters. To me getting the theme of each expansion right is more important than whether we've seen some of the characters before. Darkmoon Faire would feel quite different if the Old Gods didn't reappear themselves, for example, and I liked how the Year of the Dragon expansions helped connect up different parts of Hearthstone lore.
I also like that they are often related mechanicially. It might make a card functionally distinct - with Nat Pagle and Nat, the Darkfisher being a clear example there - but still feel believable that the same character is doing those things. The 3 Elise cards do this very well, as they all generate serious value while managing to show some character development along the way: the Starseeker has to work hard for a single bit of treasure; the Trailblazer skips a few steps and goes directly to the prize; while the Enlightened knows she already has what she wants/needs and works with that.
While I think the character development part that you showed with Elise is indeed interesting, from perspective of the gameplay it is still in my opinion a little bit weird for the same character to appear multiple times on different cards in the same game. Nat, the Darkfisher is fine, since it is an alternative univesre version of Nat Pagle, while as I mentioned Lady Liadrin is identical to her portrait in terms of lore and card theme.
Thank you for this exchange of opinions. It is interesting that players have different views on lore/gameplay etc. and we can talk about our views :)
No problem. That's what these forums are for more than anything else. I kind of wish everyone who disagreed with me left a comment rather than (just) a down-vote. There's a lot both sides can learn from discussion that simply doesn't exist with an anonymous and unexplained down-vote.
As a final note on recycled characters, I completely agree that it leads to a bit of a disconnect from the fantasy of commanding a little army of characters. In practice however that fantasy is nearly always thrown out the window in favour for win rates anyway. Take something as simple as using SI:7 Agent in Lackey rogue. It makes good sense mechanically but why would the SI:7 be helping the League of EVIL? They wouldn't, and that's surely just as wrong as having the same character appear twice.
Paladin cards not fitting the theme or the class flavor? I think you're mistaken. From murlocs, dragons, mechs, secrets, to having more healing than priest.
Everything is fine here.
I think a large part of the issue is that the Paladin class is just so narrow as a starting point, and we're seeing the same thing with Demon Hunter too. I don't blame the HS team for going beyond Warcraft Pally lore for the sake of making the class a little less same-y, but it does irk me when there are sensible choices for legendaries but they instead choose ones that aren't even on Azeroth.
Well, maybe because Lothraxion is afiliated with Silver Hand paladins.
https://wow.gamepedia.com/Lothraxion
Hmm. So he is. I missed him as he wasn't in the list of notable leaders on the Silver Hand page. That is perhaps a sign there are more appropriate members, but I guess they really wanted a bit of menagerie support for N'Zoth decks.
Yeah, all the other classes so far fit the fair theme, and then paladin over here with its shoehorned legendaries that don't fit at all. Everyone else seems to have a carnie/staff/old god minion then paladin's over here with two random lore characters who just decided to come to the fair I guess
Silver hand recruit support plus a demon for n'zoth pally, seems really good
This card seems pretty good in Standard, especially since we see a bit more Silver Hand Recruit synergy in this new set. However, it seems absolutely flat-out busted in Odd Paladin in Wild. Is that still a strong deck? Important to note that it doesn't just affect the Hero Power, but all Silver Hand Recruits.
Odd Pala is definitely a strong deck which pops back to tier 1 from every now and then, depending on the meta. The only thing I think may hold this card back is that it might be too slow. Odd Pala is an extremely refined deck already and will have a lot of competition for card slots.
