Guess we will see more of that beloved Quest-Mage ...!
Struggle with Heroic Galakrond's Awakening? I got your back :
The Battlecry is a build around where you'll only want to include specific spells to be recast. The Hero Power is interesting, eventually building up to be 2 mana Fireball/Pyroblast every turn, but has specific conditions to trigger. It also is limited, as most minions wont have enough health to build it up after a certain point. This, in a deck full of spells that deal varying amounts of damage, will make your opponent think twice about dropping a minion that can contribute to the Hero Power.
The hero power is a surprisingly minor upgrade on the standard Mage hero power, and the battlecry probably only fits some Big Spell type deck where you're sure to recast things like Deep Freeze (Frost), Flamestrike (Fire), Mask of C'Thun (Shadow) and maybe Arcane Overflow (Arcane). The potential value here is pretty high - this effectively serves as a third copy of a lot of big, impactful spells and you only really need to trigger two spells before you're getting a lot of value for the price. But it's really unclear that any Mage deck needs that much value to win games - it would have to be a very slow meta to really care much about having this in your deck.
Ultimately I'm a little shocked at how bad this hero is compared to the rest of the new hero cards. Shocked, but not particularly upset since Questline Mage is already so powerful.
Magister Dawngrasp alongside Balinda Stonehearth, Iceblood Tower and Rune of the Archmage is a deck builders galore for Big Spell Mage! Please, let it be viable! The hero power is a nice addition, but you primarily run this for the battlecry of course.
Arena > Wild > Standard
With wild, Kabal Chemist can potentially give fel (via felfire potion) or holy (via greater healing potion) spell to empower the hero card a bit more with fel/holy spell school slot, but that is a tough task considering is wild unfriendly to these type of builds. At least with shadow, there is also puzzle box to contend with mask of c'thun for the shadow spell school slot. The hero card feels a bit meme. Most importantly, this card does not empower questline mage, it had enough empowering in the year of the gryphon.
An interesting build-around, yet again trying to push Mage in a Big Spell direction with its Battlecry (although certain small spells, like Ignite aren't necessarily terrible). The Hero Power needs some help getting going, but can scale slowly into heavy damage. Would likely be the Hero to watch if we ever get into a slower meta.
I don't want to cure cancer; I want to turn people into dinosaurs.
I'm not feeling it. It's too slow for quest mage and doesn't guarantee you recast any useful spells, while Big Spell Mage rarely actually wants to cast their spells (and they don't even have a big arcane spell to cast, usually being limited to Deep Freeze and Flamestrike/Grand Finale). The hero power is also just incredibly slow.
I think this might be the key to bring home the Big Spell package. Mask of C'thun is a Shadow spell now (and the only one Mage has) meaning you're at least guaranteed to always get that one (unless you failed to cast it before).
The problem right now is the anti-synergy with part of the big spell package. You dont# want to cast most of them yourself, you want to cheat them out through other means, which removes them from the "casting" pool. It's hard to evaluate this one purely in theory, would need to see it in action.
I tried having fun once.
It was awful.
Seems a bit slow for Questline Mage or the fabled Big Mage to me. Too unreliable while throwing spells everywhere pel mel. I think if stars align and if there are a really good spread of linear spells this can be awesome.
My fingers are crossed they will release a "Foreign Studies" or something where you can discover a non-Mage spell class card

I'm assuming targeting spells like Ignite would have random targets right? And big spells recast would be the best value, so would assume big spell mage is the best archetype for this hero card. There's some interesting interactions with Wildfire and the HP though, so we could see a HP mage comeback, but doubtful
TREMBLE before.... the most legendary dragon that ever existed!
Hmm Magister Dawngrasp seems pretty bad on first sight, but its probably a bit better if you think about it. The hero power is just a upgrade from the base one, which means you can probably slot Magister Dawngrasp into ping mage as well... (probably if you save up Wildfires) Now for the battlecry: Not that bad if you think about it.
In BIG spell mage you already have 4 spell schools present: Arcane Overflow or Mass Polymorph = Arcane, Deep Freeze or that snowman summon card = Frost, Maybe Flamestrike as the fire spell. And fun fact: Mask of C'Thun is actually a Shadow spell. This got recently changed, and isn't updated yet on this site yet. (Just look it up on playhearthstone for confirmation.), this means you ALWAYS get Mask of C'Thun from the battlecry as it's mages ONLY shadow spell.
Of course it's quite... Unfortunate that Mage doesn't have acces to Holy, nature and Fel magic, (unless casino mage counts lol.) otherwise Magister Dawngrasp would be so much better. But considering their doing lots of weird spell school stuff, like frost warrior makes me think that we MIGHT get a holy, nature and fel spell for mage in the future. Maybe not this expansion or the mini set, but probably in the next year.
Standard: Overall i'm certain Magister Dawngrasp will see plenty of play in slower mage decks because of the Ignite like hero power, and with the synergy with big spell mage, which got pushed HARD this expansion.
Wild: I bet Magister Dawngrasp will see play in BIG spell mage decks in wild, which probably will get a resurgance because of standard Big Spell mage. But outside of that i feel like Magister Dawngrasp will also be a solid option for one special archetype i love playing.... CASINO MAGE! Firelands Portal, Deck of Wonders, Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron can all be repeated! THAT'S RIGHT Puzzle Box of Yogg-Saron ALSO got recently updated into a SHADOW spell! Just like Mask of C'Thun! BIG Casino mage got some HUGE buffs, and i cannot wait to play it! (Especially interested in a deck with Vanndar Stormpike in order to discount my yoggs... Probably less raliable, but Casino mage and "reliable" dont belong in one sentence) >:D
RNG is only fun as long as there is a 50/50 chance of getting something really good or trash level of bad. If RNG always results in something good, then it's not fun.
8 to cast 3 spells... I cannot see the hero power you get, but I hope it's a good one as this seems lackluster on it's own. Unless what was stated earlier in this thread is right, you could get 4 spells. And a guarantee of another Mask of C'Thun alone would push this higher on the value scale
Its not looking too good for this card. The first problem is that its basically only a fit into big spell decks, because if you are even for a second thinking you can get away with playing an 8 mana card without clearing the board or healing up, then you're in for a massive heap of disappointment. And the second problem with its hp. Doing a standard 1 damage, at turn 9? That's basically asking to die.
There's also problems with the battlecry. This card allows you to replay certain cards which you can control, which is obviously good because it removes the rng. But because most of the cards you want are expensive, you'll likely hold off playing this until you've played them all, which means yet more delay.
All in all, its not as impressive as the other hero cards (though it has to be said that puzzlebox is a shadow spell, fortunately its in wild). But nevertheless its not bad. Its certainly going to see play, but for now I wouldn't count on this being anywhere near as impressive as Sorcerer's Gambit, which unhappily even after its nerfed is still the go to deck for mage ---- because team5, if you keep printing bs cards like Siphon Mana and Incanter's Flow, you have only yourself to blame if no one wants to play anything else in mage. Its bad enough to constantly see casino cards for mage, but whenever we don't, we get spell octobots.
Cast 3 random spells? That's it? Hero power is a decent upgrade. I imagine it would max out at 5 damage usually.
My only issue with this is that quest mage can slot this in as an auxiliary win condition. There's nothing preventing it from being used in any and every mage deck...

So we have 4 schools in mage nowadays with Shadow that guarantees damage and other ones creating a possibility to do something of value. It might not be in this meta but this will be a problematic battlecry when they print more "deal x to enemy" spells.
Playing 8 mana fro recasting 4 spells is not a bad tempo play, as always, it depends on spells you are getting, but you can control it via deck bulding. It is very stron imho
This a pretty slow card. I've seen the package of spells everyone expects to be run with this. So, how many of those do you want to have in the pool before you feel this is a viable play. You should be able to get at least two of them just from playing on curve, but do you hold out for three or all four? Arcane Brilliance will at least let you reliably get those spells to play, however it will take up a spell school slot and put you in real danger of over drawing your hand. It is a pity that Rune of the Archmage isn't a spell school, but I suppose that would have been broken.
Unfortunately, common sense isn't as common as it should be.
As I said in Iceblood Tower, Big Spell Mage is looking like a Big Timmy Trap. That said, this is in particular is less of a trap, but the deck in general doesn't bode well for Dawngrasp's playability.
Hey, you heard about that Mario guy?
I really want to like them, but my god is that a lot of work to make good. Feels like the Hero Power could've done something more interesting to help spice things up.
Welcome to the site!
Hero cards should not be underestimated. If only the recasted spells would be cast on the enemy it would have been amazing.
The hero power is really good, with a lot of scaling potential. Will definitely see some play.
