  • Tracking - is it worth it?

    Quote From FuRenz

    Hi everyone,

Although already a bit experienced in the game and with hunter, I never got why everyone puts this into decks. Discard 2 cards, really? If someone can explain me I would be very grateful.

it is wrong to think about it as discarding two cards. the truth is, you never had those cards. You are not discarding them, you are just not drawing them. it is one mana to choose one card out of three from your deck to draw. sure, you are removing two cards from your deck, but that it just making your deck more consistent. and in mid-range/aggro hunter, where the card is most commonly used, you don't really have any must-draw cards. everything is expendable. so not having drawn those two cards is not much of a downside because you are just drawing different cards instead.

  • Potential new tribes

    Quote From FortyDust

I think it's kind of weird to say, "More tribes please!" as if that's some kind of added value to the game.

It's actually an extremely complicated ask, and Team 5 should absolutely not do it just for the sake of doing it.

It's especially tricky when the tribe is already represented in a large number of existing cards. For that reason, Undead is one of the least likely, along with every other player race in WoW.

Plants are definitely over-represented in a small number of classes (Druid and Rogue), so that's a problem.

Ooze, maybe. Certain spells or battlecries could copy an Ooze, and maybe they could have one that dissolves armor or something. (I have been hoping for an armor-hate mechanic for a long time!) Not necessarily ALL the armor at once, but cutting it in half might be cool.

I disagree on over representation of plants. There are no more plants than there were elemental in pre Un'Goro card pool. Also, don't you find suspicious that rogues got so many plants in Un'goro and that one of adapt options was create plants? Is it a coincidence or they had plans for plant synergies but abandoned\denied them for some reason.

And yes more tribes add value to the game. A lot of value and fun in new deckbuilding options.  Of course if tribes have cards\mechanics caring for them. Mech tag was completely irrelevant in standard for two years and that was lame...

  • Swing Cards

Hi all! I'm Scarlet, and I tend to make a lot of custom cards, so I put some into a new video of mine to discuss and talk about them. I'd really appreciate any and all criticisms and feedback possible!

    Thank you!

  • Archetype Prediction - Thief Priest

    Quote From zoobernut

I think the random nature of thief cards is where it has a hard time gaining traction. You just can't create a concrete game plan. Sometimes you get lucky but others you might just get a random card. If they made thief cards that were more deliberate and targeted this might change.

I think they've already started doing that by printing burgle effects that discover cards(Madame Lazul, Cloning Device, Hench Clan Burglar) rather than purely random ones. There's still a large random element of course, but at least you get some level of control over the outcome.

  • Archetype Prediction - Thief Priest

Priest can easily become stronger then rogue because thief rogue gets random cards, that can be very bad; mind thief priest steals card from your opponent deck, cards that your opponent choose to put inside his deck, so almost always good card.

    However, in Hearthstone more then this class have some card generators as identity: rogue card from other classes, expecially your opponent's; priest from your opponent deck; mage random mage spells; hunter random beasts;

And we got random spell mage in quest mage; for thief rogue, we are really near having a strong thief deck with Tess and the 2 mana tempo drop; for priest, well, we'll see.

  • Archetype Prediction - Thief Priest

Rogue has some much more solid synergy with cards like Spectral Cutlass that almost alone support the whole deck strategy. Priest actually doesn't have anything that can make it a competitive archetype (still a fun meme deck). Maybe if the print some interesting powercard in the next expansion set.

  • Archetype Prediction - Thief Priest

Thief Priest is definitely part of the Class identity.

But the same is true for Rogue. It's been for ages, yet the Thief trait has struggled to become actually defining of an archetype worthy of meta tiers, despite the continuous support.

Even in Wild, where Thief cards have been stacking up for a while now, a real Thief deck is yet to be seen in the meta radars (surely one could pilot one with decent results, but it's still off-meta).

I expect the same to be true for Priest, also in the future: Thief is a package you may include in a deck, an off-meta deck, but hardly an archetype in the meta.

On the other hand, you can already build a Thief-heavy Priest and play it. Just, without too many expectations.

  • Archetype Prediction - Thief Priest

I think it's possible, but I don't think it very likely just based on this evidence. Stealing has always been part of the priest identity and it's been mostly left underexplored. Every other set they prient a thief rogue legendary (Lazul is just the new Chameleos). The more obvious reason for Talanji is Spirit of the Dead + Bwonsamdi, although the way she was worded does leave the room open for other kinds of shenanigans.

Personally I wouldn't mind seeing the archetype see a little bit of support. We've seen with rogue that even just one or two powerful synergy cards can be enough to warrant a "burgle package" without going all-in on the theme.  For example you could have a spell that said "5 mana : deal 3 damage to all minions. If you have a card from another class in your hand, deal 5 damage instead."

At the moment there just isn't enough of a consistent upside to taking cards from your opponent's deck to not just play that deck instead.

  • Archetype Prediction - Thief Priest

I predict that the Hearthstone Team will support Thief Priest as a new archetype in the next expansion. For one, they have already printed multiple Legendaries for this archetype, including Talanji and Madame Lazul. Plus, one of the Boomsday cards that they decided to buff was Cloning Device, which could only ever see play if Thief Priest got more synergy cards like Talanji. This next piece of evidence is a little shaky, but in the solo adventures one of the buckets is "What's Mind is Mine", which indicates that Blizzard already thinks of Thief priest as its own archetype. However, Thief priest cards have printed before (such as Archbishop Benedictus) without them following up with synergy cards, so this could just be empty speculation. What do y'all think? Will Thief Priest finally become a deck next expansion?

As an aside, why are we still calling Master's Call Hunter a "midrange" deck?

What would you call it then? It's too slow for aggro and too fast for control and it doesn't have an OTK or massive combo.

I think I would consider it  closer to control at this point.
It's basically all removal, card draw, life gain, and value generation. (A lot of the removal just happens to be on a 1/1 body. )
I don't think it's that fast, outside of an early Hyena stealing games.

  • Sn1p Sn4p Wild and Free!

I think everyone I played against so far with this hates this deck. Good work!
Who would know that nozdormu would actually one day be a useful card though! Good catch!

  • Tracking - is it worth it?

Beast Hunter plays more like a combo deck or Miracle rogue than a typical midrange deck IMO. There are very few proactive threats you just want to plonk on the board on turns 3-6, which is the defining feature of traditional midrange, and most of the deck consists of very efficient reactive cards that allow you to generate tempo off of your opponents plays: Unleash the hounds, unleash the beast, etc.

It's a bit of a hole in the hearthstone lexicon that there's no better term for decks that present big power spikes in the mid game that aren't just big efficient proactive minions. Miracle rogue used to be the only deck like this but now we have several. I'd consider conjurer mage and miracle shaman to fall into this same combo-midrange category.

I play only paper magic. Haven't gotten into Arena yet. I play mostly sealed and draft when I play. I haven't played much lately because of kids but my oldest can read now so I will start teaching him to play magic soon. For constructed formats I like legacy and commander mostly. Dabbled a little in modern but never really got into it. Legacy is just so much more wild and fun for me.

I've only ever played Legacy in proxy form, can't afford the real thing quite yet. I've been enjoying Bomberman Combo with Auriok Salvagers and LED. What do you play in the format?

My go to deck for a really long time in legacy has been BUG Delver. The only cards I am really missing that would make it optimal are the 'goyfs and JTMS. I have the cards and contemplated RUG Delver too. I also would like to build Death and Taxes if I can get the Karakas. For modern I had Karn Tron built but I am way behind the times on that deck and suspect it needs a complete overhaul. I imagine my BUG/RUG Delver decks need some minor tweaking. 'goyf seems to finally be getting to a low enough price point that I can pick up a playset soon.

I think Delver and Karn Tron have stayed pretty close to their core for a while now so I don't think they would need much updating. And I can tell you that once you pull the trigger on Goyfs nothing feels better, I bought a playset a few years ago for use in Jund when it was popular and I still don't regret it

Yeah I am darn close to getting a play set. They don't go out of style. I just have to figure out if I have enough newer cards to sell to make it work. That is certainly a smaller barrier at this point than the damn dual lands. Glad I have those left over from when I started playing as a kid.

I wish I had duals, they are the only thing keeping me out of the Legacy Format in sanctioned competition. I'll have to just stick with the proxy's for now and enjoy the format with friends in my basement

  • What class/deck do you play to beat Mech Paladin?

I run mech paladin.  What tends to kill me are:

    1. Silence/transform/ext.  Note that instakill helps me as I make big mechs to make them die.  So bouncing/silencing/so on easily ruins my day, especially if I go all in.

    2. Killing small mechs.  The exception comes here.  Having to play small mechs due to pressure then seeing them die doesn't really help me much.  It's also a good idea because, at least in my version, I tend to be able to dump A LOT of stats into a standing mech especially if they've been buffed or had their mana lowered.

So basically do both.  Put a bit of pressure early on so that I can sit around until I can stack 3 cheap mechs on top of each other and have to either put smaller fry on to hold the board or dump everything into a big boy.  Once the big boy shows, silence/transform/ext and the game ends.

I play modern, standard, and occasionally draft. I play Grixis Death's Shadow in modern (if that wasn't obvious from my avatar), and some UW nill jank in standard.

And yes, I did draft MH1 yesterday! It was great, I drafted dimir ninjas and went 3-0, and pulling a foil Serra from my rewards packs! It was a blast, this is certainly one of my favorite limited formats.

Edit: I also play Temur Reclamation on Arena whenever I get free time, which isn't often because of school. (And finals are in a few days, so there won't be much magic for a while xD)

My brother tried to force ninjas super hard with little to no success, glad you got success out of it though! I've drafted twice and cracked an Astral Drift both times went 2-1 the first time and 1-1 before dropping due to time restraints. First time was Esper and the second was Jeskai with Tectonic Reformation

    Also, Good luck with finals!

Nice! I had honestly not expected for Astral Drift to be good at all, especially in limited. What were your payoffs?

And about the ninjas, I got somewhat lucky to find two of the unblockable changelings, as well as a 1 Mana flier with scry 2 (name is escaping me), in addition to a Ingenious Infiltrator, which closed out games really fast. Also, I got a Defile, which was excellent, and a decent counter spell suite in two Spell Snuffs. If I had to describe it, I'd say it was sort of a 'tempo deck with card advantage'. It was pretty busted!

The Esper version I was essentially flickering Man o' Wars to remove blockers as my Faerie Seers and Bazaar Trademage went upstairs for damage. I was also flickering a Plague Engineer to beat on whichever tribe they had on the battlefield at the time, In my second round I switched between Goblins, Zombies and Ninjas to slow down my opponent.

The Jeskai Version was a lot faster, I spent the time cycling things to flicker Irregular Cohort to go super wide and finish with Cleaving Sliver. I had also drafted a Serra as a sort of insurance policy. I drew almost my entire deck every game with this build.

  • Khadgar's Unexpected Tempo Mage

I crafted this deck and it is really fun to play but I find it not very consistent or at least I am having a hard time getting how to pilot this deck. Maybe I need to be less hesitant to use my conjurers calling on low cost minions?

  • Tracking - is it worth it?

    Quote From AliRadicali

The logic behind it goes something like this: unless the game goes to fatigue, you won't see every card in your deck. That being the case, would you rather draw the card you need Right Now, well, right now, or two turns later? Burning cards from the deck rarely matters more than finding the right answer, setting up a combo or curving out. One way to think about burnt cards is to pretend they were actually the bottom card of the deck.

That said, I'm probably not the best Tracking advocate, I've never quite been able to overcome the FeelsBadMan aspect of tracking over juicy cards, doubly so when you know you're going to cast Zul'jin and burn even more value. But you have to realise this is more of an emotional attachment than a logical response.

    This is the best answer.

Tracking is low-key the best Hunter card in basic/classic, and most decks should always play 2x. The caveat being Zul'jin. A number of midrange hunter decks cut a copy of Tracking so Zul'jin won't deck them out in long games. Personally, I still play 2x Tracking in every deck with Zul'jin, and I just won't play both copies against Warrior. But Warrior (and sometimes Shaman) are the only times this tends to come up.

As an aside, why are we still calling Master's Call Hunter a "midrange" deck?
