Firelands Portal for 5 is a great spell. It's gonna be pretty tough to run a deck that's got no minions (especially because a deck full of spells probably wants at least King Phaoris and Kael'thas Sunstrider), but you could always just run very light on minions and then draw aggressively through them. Mage certainly has no shortage of draw power.
More stuff for Albatross to tech against. Muahahahaha.
Blizz going for a viable spell mage? I'm all for it but I don't think this is happening before next expansion.
Better than Firelands Portal if you meet the condition, worse than Fireball if you don't.
Okay, the conditions for the spell to work is nearly impossible, since a deck full of spells is best paired with one of the best 2 drops for a spell-heavy mage, Sorcerer's Apprentice. But I dont think the card is bad, simply because it reads "deal x damage", which means it can hit face.
Put simply, its a weaker version of fireball, with an upside that will take all the way to the late game to ever accomplish. Its also NOT a highlander card, which is rare enough. Play it in tempo mage/cyclone mage or get it off cards like Mana Cyclone/Evocation.
In short, to me, the best part of the spell is that it deals face damage. You might as well forget the effect. Its almost never going to happen. But getting nearer to lethal, sure, why not?
I'm having some serious To My Side! flashbacks.
ikr. It's funny that most people call it no minion mage while the hunter version was called Spell hunter even though it had weapons
great Druid card!
absolutely trash/dust card, unless they give no minions mage AN ABSURD amount of support for this. My guess is that this will be the new "Plot Twist Warlock/Freeze Shaman" kind of archetype. (They give the archetype support for 3 expansions in a row, only for the archetype to fail miserably every time.) Well either this or it's going to be another meme archetype like Pure Paladin.
For this spell to work mage will need more summon cards (and/or swarm, but that a big weakness in mage's class identity), some more draw card spells, and a few more spells that can go face. To get all those kinda cards mage either needs like 4-5 more cards that solely support this kinda archetype, or a couple of insanely OP cards.
The only card that synergises with this is Evocation so far, but what is no minion mage supposed to do? Go face? There aren't even that many mage spells that can go face. It might be used in some kind of SUPER DUPER OMEGA MEME build of Raid the Sky Temple mage. (Because Raid the Sky Temple is a big meme card on it's own, unfortunatly... Tried to make that card work so many times...) :(
So good with Book of Specters Kappa
Spell Mage could be interesting. They might lack Summons, but their Removal and AoEs should make up for that.
I also think that the flavour fits this Class very well.
The issue is one of having a way to actually win. Without minions you have to deal 30 damage (plus however much healing there is) just from spells and the hero power. Sure mage in principle has enough, but minions are way more efficient for that job.
Conversely, if they are given enough for spell-only mage to work with very few minion summons, then that will be really uninteresting to play against: you just get stalled and eventually burned down. Meanwhile there is nothing to interact with and no tension for the opponent. They just send their minions to face and hope they don't die out of nowhere.
Don't get me wrong, the flavour does indeed fit the mage fantasy very well, but I doubt it translates into anything good for the game unless it stays a meme deck.
No minions mage? there are not enough summons for mage to function like that in standard..
I'd love to have all-spell Mage as an archetype! I've played some in the past for spell quests but it's safe to say it wasn't super competitive. If Blizzard starts supporting an archetype, it will surely be viable at some point right? *cough* Freeze Shaman *cough*
As long as you don't RNG Book of Specters
Compare with Firelands Portal.
The (2) discount is obviously not worth the condition.
Unless HUGE support is provided for a Spell Mage archetype.
well that's a buildaround
I guess that makes the legendary spell less bad.
It's also been a while sine we had a Mage spell that can actually go face (last one was Cinderstorm I believe?)
what is Apexis. WoW Lore?
https://wow.gamepedia.com/Apexis
"The Apexis were an ancient and now-extinct arakkoan civilization that attained a height of power during the Age of Order before abruptly vanishing.[2][3] They were a glorious empire of the sun that ruled vast territories alongside the ogre empire centuries ago"
No wonder they create Evocation
