Greetings everyone,
As the days pass, August is approaching its end, and with it comes the first challenge of our brand new Master Duelist series.
For those who may have missed it, Master Duelist is a Duels-exclusive series which revolves around creative deck-building: every time, you'll be asked to create a starting deck with specific restrictions (be them mana cost, keywords, mechanics, etc.) and to get the highest possible score you can hit.
Twisted... To Perfection!
This time, the deck-building requirements consist in creating a starting list featuring Y'Shaarj, the Defiler and at least 3 other Corrupt cards of your choice, be them either class or neutral cards.
The challenge will end on August 31, at 23:59:59 EST, so make sure to submit your score in time!
More information can definitely be found in the original news article (together with some available starting deck, in case you'd like to give the challenge a try!), so make sure to check it out!
Challenge's Rewards
Remember, if you'll be able to get a remarkable final score, there will be rewards for you! In fact, everyone who posts proof of a 7+ wins run in the dedicated submission forum thread will be awarded with a different amount of Gold, an in-site currency you'll be able to earn from different activities and that will be used to purchase cosmetics in our in-site shop. In order for your run to count towards the challenge, you'll have to provide an appropriate proof of your feat; otherwise, your result won't count.
Here's a quick breakdown explaining the rewards you'll receive based on your performances:
TOTAL WINS | GOLD EARNED |
Best Result (both Casual and Heroic) | 200 |
12 | 100 |
10-11 | 50 |
8-9 | 20 |
7 | 10 |

Whoever obtains the best score will also have the chance of suggesting the next challenge's theme!
If you want to submit your score, follow the instructions in the forum thread.
How is the Challenge Going?
We have a received a couple a really spicy submissions so far: in fact, some players were able to get all the way to the end of the run, while others have hit equally remarkable results. Here below you'll find the most successful deck submitted (yet), so that you may get the inspiration you need to queue a run or two!
dib's Corrupt Rogue - 12-2 Casual Run
Just a few hours after the challenge started, dib pulled a 12er in no time thanks to the starting deck you see below: what dib did was incorporating Y'Shaarj, the Defiler and the Corrupt package in Battlecry Rogue. It goes without saying that Meek Mastery did help a bit, but we absolutely don't want to diminish dib's feat - congratulations!
Passive Treasures Chosen
First pool - Meek Mastery
Second pool - Battle Totem
Calenmir's Clown Druid - 12-1 Casual Run
A few days later, Calenmir was able to top dib's score, hitting another 12er but with just one loss - very close to perfection, but apparently... not twisted enough!
Jokes aside, we are pretty happy to see such a niche archetype find success in Duels, even more with a rather taxing deck-building restriction on top of it (even though both Carnival Clown and Strongman are already core cards, so that might have helped a little).
Calenmir is currently at the top of the leaderboard, and just a few days are sitting between them from winning the first episode of Master Duelist!
Passive Treasures Chosen
First pool - Meek Mastery
Second pool - Endurance Training
Now that you know everything you need, grab your deck: it's time to D-D-D-D-Duels! Good luck to everyone!
Comments
Waiting impatiently for the next round.
Most things are already set: you just need to wait a couple more days ;)
Please take the lead from me :D I have no idea about what to select on next challenge :D
If you don't have an idea, I already have a list of possible themes for the next challenges. I created it in case no one will hit 12 wins, but you can always take inspiration from it if you feel like!
Unless someone won't top your score...
I wondered if that 12 win requirement had been lifted when I read this article. Not that it matters since 2 people have gone all the way anyway.
When in doubt, just pick a Thing and forbid it.
No cards in your starting deck with bolded keywords.
No cards in your starting deck with artwork featuring orcs.
Or whatever.
And congrats! I'm sure I won't be snatching the lead away with a score like that!
Yep, I have been really busy and missed the original article, too. Definitely want to join in. Will look through the threads and take a crack at it.
Make yourself at home, and good luck with your runs!
Fun, thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention, I wasn't aware there was such a community challenge going down.
Lovin' the idea
Good to know that there are potential competitors out there that missed the original article!
I am glad we decided to publish a reminder :)
