Dragons Have Made Their Grand Entrance into Hearthstone's Battlegrounds! 7 New Heroes, 18 New Cards, and More!

The Dragons are finally arriving into Hearthstone's Battlegrounds in a game update today - it is about time!

  • Tavern Tier 6 now starts at 10 coins, down from 11.
  • Sneed's Old Shredder has been moved to Tavern Tier 5,  down from Tier 6.
  • George the Fallen's Hero Power now costs 3, down from 4.
  • Mama Bear - 5/5 Beast, Whenever you summon a Beast, give it +5/+5.
  • Lightfang Enforcer now also buffs Dragons.
  • Professor Putricide has been removed.

New Heroes

There are seven (7!) new heroes being added to Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Yes, they're all Dragons, including Reno Jackson. Blizzard you beautiful people.

  • Galakrond - (1) Replace a minion in Bob's Tavern with a minion from a higher Tavern Tier.
  • Deathwing - (Passive) ALL minions have +3 Attack.
  • Ysera - (1) Refresh and add a Dragon to Bob's Tavern.
  • Nozdormu - (Passive) Your first Refresh each turn costs (0).
  • Malygos - (0) Replace a minion with a random one of the same Tavern Tier.
  • Alexstrasza - (Passive) After you upgrade Bob's Tavern to Tavern Tier 5, Discover two Dragons.
  • Reno Jackson - (4) Make a friendly minion Golden (Once per game).

We're getting eighteen (18!!) new minions added to Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Some of these are existing minions in the game.

  • I will rate new heroes from 1* - terrible to 5* - very good.

    1* - none of them

    2* - Alexstrasza - Why? 3 reasons:

    - her hero power does nothing until Tavern Tier 5 (and unlike A.F.Kay power, you could be dead before)

    - you could discover a shit (like lieutenant, steward and enforcer)

    - hero power forces you to play dragons and u could be unlucky with finding them (in worst case hero power gives you 2 coins)

    2 stars instead 1 because sometimes you will be lucky enough to highroll on her.

    3* - Deathwing - Very good with beasts and rat pack. 2 rat packs can carry you to late game alone, but in late game his power is close to useless (and it's weak against mirror matches)

    3* - Nozdormu - Each turn he gives u additional chance to roll something good. And does nothing more beyond that.

    4* - Malygos - Not so good in early game, but pretty good in late game. You can use it on high tier minions (lower pool) to get desired ones (like megasaur in murlock deck).

    4* - Galakrond - Has technically different version of Toki power. We know how good Toki is, so he is too.

    5* - Ysera - Roll with guaranteed dragon? Count me in! Best hero for dragon synergy, create your Dream team pretty fast.

    5* - Reno - Unique hero power. Remember when you looked for minions to upgrade your best card and couldn't find any? Or when u wanted to run second golden copy? Fear not! Reno will save you! Best cards for this power - Rivendare, Brann, Soul Juggler, Lightfang Enforcer, most of Tier 6 minions.

  • So annoyed.  First I had to fully reinstall due to the iOS issues.  Then I’ve played 8 or 9 games of battlegrounds and only been offered one of the new heroes 1 time. 

  • Downloaded patch, installed, launched game, game says “Let’s go to the store to start download”, kicks me out of the game to the app store where I stare at the app page with the Open button....

    so game is unplayable for me right now, good job Blizzard.

  • People are forgetting how brokenly powerful a golden Brann or Baron can be late game. The idea that you can be Reno and save his power for one of them is crazy. I know getting Brann or Baron are rare in the first place but still...

  • It would be helpful to include in the post the "Dev insights" regarding Tier 6 and removed minions. And also the animation speed up from 0.8 to 0.2 seconds.

  • Man they gave Murzond his old chunky art and not his new sexy art from DoD.

    That said all these additions look pretty neat! Is there a list of playable Tavern Heroes? 

    • We don't have one yet, though there's plans for that with the introduction of our Battlegrounds section coming in the future :D

  • I am very confused on what Murozond does. What is a warband and what counts as the last minion?

    • A Warband is what they call the group of minions you’re running on your battleground team. 

      A minion is... well a minion. So you get a random minion that they were running. 

    • Warbands I'm pretty sure are the board, it's what they call your group of minions in the stats page

  • Is this a client patch or server side? not seeing a download on android?

    • Mobile updates take additional time before they release; you'll hopefully see one in a few hours...or at least by tomorrow.

  • Wow! Even sooner than I expected!

    The new cards aren't listed here yet, but the video showed some of them. Kalecgos is a really interesting way to buff your whole board, offering potentially +6/+6 for each battlecry minion bought, although might be late at tier 6. Togwaggle seems very easily sniped, especially with those fire-breathing ping dragons. Speaking of pings, Imp Mama looks really good, and gives extraordinary fuel for Soul Jugglers. Potential highrolls with Mal'ganis and Voidlord. And most likely it can't summon itself. I wonder what repeatedly buffing card we'll get, something like Iron Sensei for Dragons.

    As for the heroes: Galakrond is a worse Toki. Nozdormu is a very strong all-around pick that has no weaknesses or pitfalls. Ysera (ew hands), contrary to Jaraxxus and other tribe-specific heroes, counteracts the unluckiness of not finding minions of the tribe you're looking for, and guarantees strong synergy and many triples. Alexstraza seems slow to be any good. Malygos is basically +1 minion to a reroll per turn of a tier of your choice, looks okay, can be cast on your own minions but why would you do that. Reno can be very good on a Brann or something, but once per game? So no value other than that one occasion that may never come before you're eliminated? And for Deathwing: no. It's not worth a buildaround, as you opponent gets the same bonus, and that eliminates any slight advantage you may get. 

    • Please disregard my "analysis" completely. I'm a noob at Battlegrounds and these amateur predictions have turned out to be utterly false. Deathwing is a really great hero with token cards. My opinion is entirely wrong.

  • Whew that's a lot of stuff. Don't like how many heroes are suddenly trying to invade Toki's territory with replacing minions in the tavern and I'm kinda sad they removed Phalanx, Tortollan, Boogey AND Festeroot, which pretty much removes most mid-game alternatives Tirion had aside from deathrattle divine shields and demons. The unnerf on Mama Bear was much needed, though I don't think it's enough. Usually the issue is even making it to the Bear as beasts. Nice to see a tier 6 demon added, it was pretty weird that you wanted to stick around on 4 for triples because any discover on 6 was worthless. The removal of a bunch of divine shield Mechs makes the good mechs you'd want in a mech build even more contested, on the other hand, with a whole new minion type added, that might actually open up more space for you to go mechs because it's not what everyone else will be doing. One thing I was hoping for that's missing though is an unnerf to Lightfang. All these dragons seem to just be feeding off each other, so they don't seem to fit into menagerie, Lightfang doesn't buff dragons either, so assembling a good menagerie comp is going to be harder than before, and it's pretty weak to begin with these days.

  • Red Whelp seems bugged already. It reads 'At the start of combat', but if it is sniped by another Red Whelp it doesn't trigger.
