Dormant Keyword Clarifications - The Darkness is No Longer Randomly Summoned in Ashes of Outland

We've got some clarifications this evening on how the Dormant mechanic works with regards to summoning and evolving.

  • Dormant minions that wakeup on their own can be randomly summoned/evolved.
  • The Darkness can no longer be randomly summoned/evolved. (It isn't a real Dormant minion)
  • Evolving into a Dormant minion causes it to start Dormant - it must sleep 2 turns.
  • You can evolve a Dormant minion after it has woken up - no before. (No mana cheating!)

The changes arrive with the release of Ashes of Outland, so get ready for no more nonsense with The Darkness!

Quote From Liv Breeden

Do you happen to know whether the new dormant minions are in the evolve pool?

Funnily enough, we've changed this rule. Minions that will wake up on their own (new Dormant demons that awaken after 2 turns) are in the pool to be randomly summoned. Minions that can't wake up (The Darkness) are no longer in the random summon/evolve pool. (Source)

So if you evolve into a new dormant minion will it start dormant

Yes. And you get the awaken trigger in two turns. (Source)

Is it possible to evolve a dormant minion?

Once it wakes up. ;) (Source)

When was this? Was it hidden in the patch notes?

Uh, it might not *quite* be out. I think that change goes live when Ashes of Outland does. (Source)

  • Fascinating how Recruit, random summons, and Evolve effects are gaining this massive buff and The Darkness gets a load of good will as a result. It's still one of the worst legendary minions ever printed but now it won't ruin games anymore by being given to the player via bad RNG.

    • I view the darkness as anti reno tool.

  • What do you think about the new minion that evolves adjacent ones? I think that should work on dormant, no?

    • No, because it's Dormant

  • THANK GOD! So sick of evolving into The Darkness!

Ok, kidding, but this is a good change. Also appreciate them differentiating between this and new Dormant minions.

  • So The Darkness isn't really sleeping. He's just standing there, waiting

    • Breathing heavily...

    • ... MENACINGLY.

  • Well, at least now it is clear : It isn't a real Dormant minion
